The OverAchiever: More Accomplished Angler, page 2
As with Deadliest Catch (see below), you'll need to fish up a raid boss for this one, but fortunately the Lurker is a lot less annoying. There's no additional trip required to pick up a special lure, although you will need to be able to survive some hostile waters long enough to reach the Lurker's platform. However, at 80 this shouldn't really be an issue because the Coilfang Frenzies in the SSC waters are only 70 elites.
Head to Serpentshrine Cavern, take the big elevator down into the instance, and then take the small elevator up to the raid's starting platform. At this point, you can either drop down to the water below or you can stealth your way to Lurker if you're a stealth class. His platform is located smack in the center of the raid, and you can swim over to it (assuming you can survive the Frenzies you may aggro), use either a water-walking or levitate effect to reach him, or stealth (then swim) over. The big, circular platform in the middle is the one you want.
At this point, you'll want to take all your gear off, because there's no way to survive Lurker even at 80 in tank gear (trust me on this one). Safely naked? Start casting your line into the central pool and just keep fishing -- eventually, Lurker will appear and you'll have your achievement.
Old Man Barlowned
Easy -- it just takes a bit of persistence. Keep visiting Old Man Barlo at Silmyr Lake (northeast of Shattrath) each day until you've picked up -- and successfully completed -- each of the 5 fishing dailies he offers.
Deadliest Catch
This one's pretty easy at 80, but can be a bit time-consuming if you don't already have a few Mudskunk Lures lying around. These are items (that, interestingly, are not soulbound, and can thus be sold or traded between characters) that can be purchased from Nat Pagle on a small island at 58, 60 in the bay of Dustwallow Marsh. You'll need at least one to do this achievement, and if you plan on spending any amount in Zul'gurub farming rep or mounts, it's usually worth your time to pick up a bunch at once.
Got at least one? Head to Zul'gurub, and once inside, drop down to the river circling the north-central part of the zone. If you have Find Fish, you should see a few Zulian Mudskunk pools pop up (although they are technically named Muddy Churning Waters). You'll need to fish up 5 of these. Once you've got them, you will now able to summon Gahz'ranka.
At this point, all you need to do is swim to the northeastern bend of the river to Pagle's Point, climb ashore, and right-click your Mudskunk Lure. As soon as Gahz'ranka appears, you should have your achievement.
The Coin Master
I have gone on record several times before saying how much I love the Dalaran fountain, and I'm tempted to devote an edition of the OverAchiever to the lore behind all of these coins.
Sadly, the meta-achievement linked to them is another big pile of RNG. There's no real strategy to be had here; you park yourself at the fountain and just keep fishing, fishing, and fishing until the RNG gods smile upon you and you've gotten all 53 coins. Happily enough, the gold coins -- once flipped back into the fountain -- grant you a two-minute buff called "Lucky" increasing your chance to fish up all coins. That said, it doesn't increase your chance to fish up the remaining ones you still need, and because this is a magic fountain, it has the power to duplicate the coins you'll get (a power, I must say, it seems to exercise with great enthusiasm). Just grit your teeth and keep fishing -- and, if you're me, set aside Jaina Proudmoore's coin to carry in your packs while your guild thrashes Arthas, because you are a geek.
For all your troubles, Jepetto Joybuzz (the toymaker in Dalaran) will mail you a Titanium Seal of Dalaran, highly useful for all your coin-tossing needs.

I admit, the fishing contest is something that continues to give me incredible grief each week. It's really a hope killer. I've completed almost all the other fishing achievements, but have started slacking with the remaining ones because I know completing the meta is so near impossible. It's a shame, since I generally love fishing for how relaxing it is.
For context, I play on a PvP server with a large faction imbalance: about 3 Horde for every 1 Alliance. Every Sunday, there is a large (30-40) group of Horde who go to STV for the sole purpose of griefing Alliance fishermen. None of these Horde care about fishing, they just care about ruining fishing for other people. Even with Alliance members who try to help it's virtually impossible to compete.
The Northrend contest has helped, I admit. I don't get killed at all since everyone is so spread out. But Northrend's "contest" is a lot more like a lottery, so I just try and hope. Anyway, perhaps this will just attract "go normal realm or stfu" comments, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. Good luck to all anglers out there trying to win!

I feel for you. If you have some amount of skill and a few friends the contest isn't too hard to win within a few weeks but I would never wanna try it on a pvp server.
Kroof Mar 26th 2010 6:15AM
I completely understand how hard that must be to complete on a pvp server. It is terrible enough without having people gank you all day long.
On the other hand, you're on a pvp server. It shouldn't come as much of a surprise that horde are going to have a field day slaughtering a bunch of alliance dressed in funny hats wielding sticks.

I play on a pvp server and it took about 10 attempts to get this achievment. The time I won it I had 4 guidies running around harassing horde and guarding me. Now that the frustration of the event is over I consider it one of the most fun times I've had in the game. I nearly won it a couple of times on my own as well but was beaten by seconds. I still want to win the northrend one as well for that xp ring.

For clarification, it's not the pvp in and of itself that is an issue for me, but the faction imbalance on my server. I enjoy a good bit of world pvp, but on a server with such a large imbalance you end up spending way too much time fighting on corpse running to be a competitive fisherman.
We weekly organize an Alliance counter-raid to fight back, but with our fewer numbers and the overall size of STV our effectiveness is limited. It really only takes one or two corpse runs to effectively destroy your chances of winning.

I like fishing, but this achievements are not for me :)
having my nice turtle is more than enough
but I would love to have all those coins :D

I got all of the stuff for the meta except the contest, and I'll never be able to get it because I work weekends, which sucks, because I love fishing and would adore having the 'salty' title. Shame that the meta requirement is something I cannot compete for, much less win.
Jamesisgreat Mar 25th 2010 11:03PM
Yeah - wasn't the new fishing contest meant to originally be on Wednesday or something? Diff days and diff times each week would really help make this achievement a lot more fair for those of us with unchangeable weekly commitments outside WoW.
RothKeahi Mar 26th 2010 12:01AM
Yeah, when it was introduced on the PTR it was Wednesday evenings. That made me so happy cause I am off Wednesdays and almost always work Saturdays, then they changed it and my smile went away...
Aloix Mar 25th 2010 10:05PM
I have a long way to go on finishing many of these, but I did get the Coin Master recently.
It's a great one to work on while waiting for the random queue to pop (if you're DPS).
(Yeah, Ms Obvious is Obvious... )

I won the Stranglethorn fishing competition on my first time. Things I recommend:
1. Be 80. No sense aggroing the whole zone.
2. Set your hearth to Booty Bay. This removes the need to run back. Yay.
3. Have water walking pots/Path of Frost or anything else that allows you to mount on water (sorry if I missed Water Walking, I can't remember if it does)
4. Wear some PvP gear if you're on a PvP server. I killed one Alliance dude a couple of times on my epic fishing journey, and with this I stole all the pools he was at.
5. Don't panic. It will get stressful at the last 5-10 fish, but just focus.
6. If you see someone else who you can't kill at a pool, it may be better to move on instead of trying to steal from their pool.
Bronwyn Mar 25th 2010 10:52PM
Just adding: Bring friends if you can. It's helpful if you have a few friends to scout schools for you and to pretend to fish in them. If they would like to win the contest in future weeks you can help out :)
dcisko Mar 26th 2010 12:32AM
Also: keybind your Cast skill, so you can cast quickly. Bind it to something close to Shift so you can shift-loot the fish.
And don't bother fishing a pool that's already being fished. Travel time is your biggest time-waster. So if you find pristine pools, you'll need fewer of them, and so spend less time traveling.
Myself, I'm cursing RNG for The One That Didn't Get Away. I've probably fished up 1,000 Fangtooth Herring, and no Dark Herring. The kicker is that I already have the 15-pound Mud Snapper, but I fished it up back in BC so it doesn't count for the achievement. :(
dcisko Mar 26th 2010 12:34AM
Oh - and know what reward you want when you win. I lost my first tourney when I couldn't click the fishing pole reward fast enough. That hurt!
Zaphire Mar 25th 2010 10:47PM
I wish the new fishing contest was on Wednesday like they originally planned. Weekend afternoons are a bad time for me.
Jabberwoky Mar 25th 2010 11:03PM
Anyone who has problems with the Stranglethorn fishing tournament should transfer to Eonar. Last weekend when I got my 15th win I did not see a single person fishing in my area. It seems that everyone is either banking on a really random Northrend tournament win or they have their achievement already.
Sinfulle Mar 25th 2010 11:44PM
I've been fishing for Mr. Pinchy for so long I simply cannot believe he exists. I can see the pictures and read the stories. Those bring me no comfort. Even thinking of fishing again in nasty Terokkar makes me want to sit in a corner and rock back and forth. I blame all those Skettis Arakkoa and their shadow magic for my bad luck.
Oteo Mar 26th 2010 12:12AM
I felt that way farming Anzu on my druid, although Mr Pinchy may be worse...
bones Mar 26th 2010 9:03AM
My first time fishing for crawdads I fished up Mr Pinchy and my first wish was the pet. I didn't know that was rare and thought that I would get another one every 2 days.
In the dozen times I have fished in Outland, I fished up Mr Pinchy 3 times. So he does exist. I must be very lucky.
Shisho Mar 25th 2010 11:58PM
Had a massive luck streak when attempting this on my most recent character. I fished up a pinchy leveling my fishing in only about 5 pools, and got the pet on the first wish. I then tried my hand at the STV fishing contest that weekend. I ran into some pvp and eventually got ganked at some point while staking out a spot. The people must of realized a gankfest wasn't a way to win so they moved along and I had a spot all to myself and got very lucky on catches and won on my first attempt.
So I just finished up the other set of cheevs for the Salty title. The most major part of this is winning the weekly contest. The other difficult achievements are just grindfests.
I would like to win the new one for the heirloom ring, but have only been on to do about 3 of them and have had no luck fishing up anything. The contest usually is over in 5 minutes on my server.
