The OverAchiever: More Accomplished Angler, page 2
As with Deadliest Catch (see below), you'll need to fish up a raid boss for this one, but fortunately the Lurker is a lot less annoying. There's no additional trip required to pick up a special lure, although you will need to be able to survive some hostile waters long enough to reach the Lurker's platform. However, at 80 this shouldn't really be an issue because the Coilfang Frenzies in the SSC waters are only 70 elites.
Head to Serpentshrine Cavern, take the big elevator down into the instance, and then take the small elevator up to the raid's starting platform. At this point, you can either drop down to the water below or you can stealth your way to Lurker if you're a stealth class. His platform is located smack in the center of the raid, and you can swim over to it (assuming you can survive the Frenzies you may aggro), use either a water-walking or levitate effect to reach him, or stealth (then swim) over. The big, circular platform in the middle is the one you want.
At this point, you'll want to take all your gear off, because there's no way to survive Lurker even at 80 in tank gear (trust me on this one). Safely naked? Start casting your line into the central pool and just keep fishing -- eventually, Lurker will appear and you'll have your achievement.
Old Man Barlowned
Easy -- it just takes a bit of persistence. Keep visiting Old Man Barlo at Silmyr Lake (northeast of Shattrath) each day until you've picked up -- and successfully completed -- each of the 5 fishing dailies he offers.
Deadliest Catch
This one's pretty easy at 80, but can be a bit time-consuming if you don't already have a few Mudskunk Lures lying around. These are items (that, interestingly, are not soulbound, and can thus be sold or traded between characters) that can be purchased from Nat Pagle on a small island at 58, 60 in the bay of Dustwallow Marsh. You'll need at least one to do this achievement, and if you plan on spending any amount in Zul'gurub farming rep or mounts, it's usually worth your time to pick up a bunch at once.
Got at least one? Head to Zul'gurub, and once inside, drop down to the river circling the north-central part of the zone. If you have Find Fish, you should see a few Zulian Mudskunk pools pop up (although they are technically named Muddy Churning Waters). You'll need to fish up 5 of these. Once you've got them, you will now able to summon Gahz'ranka.
At this point, all you need to do is swim to the northeastern bend of the river to Pagle's Point, climb ashore, and right-click your Mudskunk Lure. As soon as Gahz'ranka appears, you should have your achievement.
The Coin Master
I have gone on record several times before saying how much I love the Dalaran fountain, and I'm tempted to devote an edition of the OverAchiever to the lore behind all of these coins.
Sadly, the meta-achievement linked to them is another big pile of RNG. There's no real strategy to be had here; you park yourself at the fountain and just keep fishing, fishing, and fishing until the RNG gods smile upon you and you've gotten all 53 coins. Happily enough, the gold coins -- once flipped back into the fountain -- grant you a two-minute buff called "Lucky" increasing your chance to fish up all coins. That said, it doesn't increase your chance to fish up the remaining ones you still need, and because this is a magic fountain, it has the power to duplicate the coins you'll get (a power, I must say, it seems to exercise with great enthusiasm). Just grit your teeth and keep fishing -- and, if you're me, set aside Jaina Proudmoore's coin to carry in your packs while your guild thrashes Arthas, because you are a geek.
For all your troubles, Jepetto Joybuzz (the toymaker in Dalaran) will mail you a Titanium Seal of Dalaran, highly useful for all your coin-tossing needs.

I have 2 characters with Salty title, I won the fishing compo the 1st time I tried and then it took about a year of trying on and off to win it again on another character. You need to catch all the fish needed in about 15-17 mins to win the compo, fish in other peoples pools cuz they will fish in yours. Hearth to BB and make sure you decide what reward you want before you hand in, you dont wanna be standing around while you decide.

Here's a good TIP for fishing up coins in the fountain. If you save up about 10-15 gold coins before flipping them you have a very good chance of sustaining the increased chance buff for a very long time. Doing this I got the achievement done in a few hours of fishing starting from 0 coins.
If you just flip the gold coins as you get them the buff may run out before you get another gold coin. Saving a large stack and then going from there gives you breathing room on the timer.
Robred Mar 26th 2010 1:31PM
That, my friend, is an epic logic fail.
Whilst saving up 10-15 gold coins means you can have 20-30 mins of uninterrupted luck, you will have no luck at all whilst saving up all the coins. Which you would have had if you flipped them when you received them.
It makes no difference whether you flip the coins immediately and take the luck immediately or save them up and take the luck later. All you are doing is delaying the joy of the luck.

I've been Salty for awhile now, and yes the fishing tourney is incredibly hard to win.
I remember hearthing to Booty Bay and running to the quest giver expecting to hear the yell at any time. I must have screamed like a little girl when I turned in those fish.
I was one of the lucky ones with Mr. Pinchy. I farmed him off and on for a little over a week and my first wish was the pet.
As far as my turtle mount though. The RNG gods have decided that I have been blessed enough and this is my punishment. I have farmed for hours and hours for the turtle. I'm well past 8k pool fish by now. Thats when I stopped keeping track. I've run into so many people who were doing a daily and happened to catch it. I hate them with every fiber of my being.

I've won the new Northrend fishing Tourney twice now, once with my main here and once with my wife's toon, and thought I'd share my strategy with all the good people of WoW.com. Prepare to be enlightened, or bored to tears by an obsessive geek with OCD.
1. Zoom Zoom!
Make sure you have either an epic flying mount or, if you're another super awesome druid like me, epic flight form. Those precious seconds you save flying from node to node means more casts, which means more chances to catch the shark.
2. Remember what Illidan said...
..."You are not prepared!"? Well don't be a nooblet and come unprepared. Yeesh! First turn autoloot on. Next bring walker walking potions. These wonderful things make it much easier to line up that perfect cast. Fishing on the shore is for real life type people. Sunshine....yuck! Word of advice though, don't pop out of flight form too high or you'll go splat with water walking on. It hurts and you'll end up in some hospital surrounded by Gnomes and Goblins attempting to practice medicine. *shivers* Oh, and bag space is always a good thing.
3. Location, location, location!
Use a mix of online resources and your own scouting abilities to find a zone with many fishy nodes as possible. Once you found said place, show up early and scout what route you'll take between each fishy node. You do have the find fish ability, right? Right?!? This way once you fish one node, you'll know exactly where your next stop will be.
For me I have won not once, but twice, fishing in Howling Fjord. Just above Utgarde Keep is a small island surrounded by several Fangtooth nodes. If luck is on your side, you may even catch your shark without ever leaving this tiny little island. Tis true! Otherwise once you're done with the island nodes start flying down, or up as it may be, the streams that connect to it. Easy!
4. ET stone home!
You did have your stone set in Dala, right? What? I should have mentioned that earlier. Pffft....I thought you were serious about winning this thing. Want me to hold your fishing pole for you too? Wait...that didn't sound right. Err...anyway if you're part of the super sexy (and less hairy) Alliance, your stone will be set just a few yards away from Mr. Whisker Face. If you're the smelly horde...well hoof it! Then if you win take the new Heirloom ring and reroll Alliance and take this as a lesson learned. =)
Regardless of your choice in factions, click Mr. Catfish Face, click super awesomesauce Dread Pirate Ring, and click complete. Do it in that order as fast as you can. You haven't been reading the quests up to this point anyhow, so why start now. It's all about being super quick. Think Gnome Mage on two pots of DD coffee. Win!
And there you have it! You now have a shinny new heirloom ring and the achievement! Now expect many whispers of congratulation and questions on how you won. Remember...tell them you won by attending Chef Ragepaw's Super Sexy Awesomesauce Fishing and Cooking School!

"because there's no way to survive Lurker even at 80 in tank gear (trust me on this one)" - buble+hearthstone? :-D
pyro_818 Mar 26th 2010 8:42AM
Just FYI, Mages can cheesily survive The Lurker Above - I did it at 70. Just open a portal before you start to fish and hop in it as soon as the Lurker rears his massive, ugly head.

I wrapped up the Salty title recently after finally winning the Booty Bay fishing contest. El's Anglin' has some good advice, but things you need to do:
-Set your hearth to the BB inn for quick travel back
-Find a relatively unfished stretch of coastline and protect it as best you can leading up to the start
-Avoid fishing crappy pools that spawn so close to the coast that their graphic is sliced in half
-Fish like crazy... lures and water-walking elixirs are practically a necessity
In the end, you do have to get lucky. There's no way to make your lure hit the pool but you just have to keep fishing constantly and as soon as you have 40, hit the hearth and run to the dude on the dock to turn in. Pick your quest reward quickly in case there's someone else a step behind you. All that=win for me at least.
Also, LOVE the Dalaran fountain but I love the coins even more. I tossed back every coin I grabbed (I'm Horde so Jaina's coin is meh... though I want it again now that we've downed the LK) except for Arugal's coin...
"I wish someday to retire to my own tidy little estate, with a bunch of pet dogs to keep me company." I'll be there with you, friend.

I have won the contest on all 3 of my 80s (priest, druid, and pally). The priest won the STV a long time ago, and has proudly displaying 'Salty' ever since. It is one of my favorite titles, because it is one of the rarest titles (I used to show 'Champion of the Naruu' before I got 'Salty'). I try and win the contest whenever I remember (which is not that often really). Am I elitist? Sure, but hey that is one of the few *true* achievements.
I will share some of my experiences and tips about the the tournament with you all though.
Both:
-Have the find fish ability. This will greatly help you.
-Having a fishing skill high enough to not catch junk (STV I think is over 300, and NR is over 400 I think (depending on the pool)).
-Have walking waling potions.
STV:
-Like others have said. Set your hearth to Booty Bay.
-The contest on my server generally last about 10-15 minutes (I won it with incredible luck in about 10 minutes IIRC)
-The pools spawn along the coast near BB and the horde town about mid map. Most people (at least on my server) stay near BB. There seems to be more pool spawn there, but more competition. The goal of this tourny is max time fishing with at little travel as possible. So less spawns with less competition might be better. This just depends really on your server.
-You will not see the nodes, before the tournament starts, so just be in the area and ready to run to one.
-Definitely use water walking here, bc you can beeline it to the next node (in NR you can just fly).
-If you are on PVP, DON'T fight. You will have more time fishing by ignoring the horde. If you are being attacked, try a different area next week. Better yet, bring a posse to protect you.
-Enlist a decoy/scout. Most people going for this will skip a node if another is fishing it in. Have a friend group with you, to find the next closest node. They "pretend" to fish in that node. That way you can see on your map the next node, and it will deter people fishing in that node. (This is not a guaranteed strategy, but it seems effective on my server)
-This one is about 60% strategy and 40% luck. You might get 2 fish in one node or up to 5 (maybe 6, cant remember the most I have gotten).
Northrend:
-This one in my opinion is pure dumb luck, with very little strategy.
-This one can last really a few minutes or longer. Since it is really more RNG that anything.
-Make sure your hearth is Dalaran - Hero's Inn Tavern (right by the foutain)
-Epic flying will definitely help
-Water walking potions are less useful here since you can fly, but if there are nodes real close together, it might not be worth mounting to run next to it (depending on your class/profession - IE rocket boots or druid travel form).
-The shark can be caught in any pool in Northrend.
-The same concept as STV applies here about PVP, avoid if possible.
-Since it can be any pool, find the area that is less "traveled". Some area are more dense in pools (like Sholazar), but that will probably bring more competition. I have won it twice in the same area, but sorry that secret is staying with me :) (yes, again, I am elitist)
-Decoys are not as useful, since the number of nodes are so spread out. A scout for the next pool is helpful though, since they can be spread out.
A weird thing I noticed both times I won the NR one is the node I caught the shark in, I was catching nothing a few casts before. I don't mean junk either, just *nothing*. I thought it was glitched, but then BAM I got the shark. This has happened both times to me. So you if are catching "nothing" don't abandon that node.
The reason I said this one is more dumb luck is how I won it on my pally. He had like 375 fishing, and did *not* have the ability to find fish. I am color blind, so seeing the pools without that ability is very difficult. I even started the tourny flying to a node (I was not ready and at a pool at the beginning). I got to my "secret" spot (which at the time was just where I started). I emptied two nodes, and the 3rd one was the one I thought was glitched. I got the sharked, hearthed and hoofed it to the Kaluak guy. I mean this guy had almost everything stacked against him, and I won the tournament in like 6 minutes after it started.
Anyways, don't get discouraged if you don't win. *EVERYONE* (horde and alliance) compete together against this. You might not need to change your strategy, just because you lost. A good portion of this is just the roll of the dice.

I hae all the acheivements on this list, So I have to agree about the Mr. Pinchy achevement, I healed through BC, but i did cook up alot of spicy crawdad for my tank husband. I spend endless days and nights fishing for that elusive lobster, to no avail. It wasn't until about 3-4 months ago i finally caught him for the first time, and thank god, I got my magical crawdad box on my second "wish"
As for the fishing contest, I did it at 70, as a holy preist, on a PVP server. The day that i won, i had about 100 light feathers for levetating goodness, a ret paladin, and an ele shaman both with fairly good arena gear, "protecting" me while I fished, and a hearth set to Booty Bay. I don't think its humanly possible to do that achevement without hearthing there. I still have the fishing pole i won. But nowadays I use my jewelled fishing pole.
I think for the meta, which i still dont have, the hardest one is definately the one that didn't get away. I've been trying to catch one of those stupid fish for ever :(. Its all I need!
