WoW, Casually: Is WoW still fun?
Robin Torres writes WoW, Casually for the player with limited playtime. Of course, you people with lots of playtime can read this too, but you may get annoyed by the fact that we are unashamed, even proud, of the fact that beating WoW isn't our highest priority. Take solace in the fact that your gear is better than ours, but if that doesn't work, remember that we outnumber you. Not that that's a threat, after all, we don't have time to do anything about it. But if WoW were a democracy, we'd win.
I'm letting you into my thought process again this week, because I think I'm one of many players with limited playtime asking themselves if they are still having fun in WoW.
Me: I hate that video. Stormtroopers are cold, impersonal evil -- they don't dance!
Myself: I love it! Yay!
I: I don't know. I just don't know.
Me: So here we are again.
I: Yep. The List is pretty obsolete right now until I do more playtesting and research.
Myself: Playing WoW is fun!
Me: Is it? Still?
I: I don't know.
Myself: Yes it is!
Me: Prove it.
Myself: Random Battlegrounds!
Me: Jumping on the bandwagon again I see.
I: It's new. It's fun. It's ever changing. If you like PvP, like I do, it really is something to get excited about. The only problem with it, like everything, is that after a while of doing only battlegrounds, it feels like a grind. The cool thing about dailies is that it drums up interest making the queues lower. The bad thing about dailies is that it makes you feel like it's on your To Do list, sucking a little bit of the fun out of it. WoW is supposed to be our stress release, not another thing we didn't get done in our busy lives. So yes, battlegrounds are fun and yes the new system makes it more fun, but you still need to mix it up so you don't accidentally suck all the fun out of it.
Myself: Random Dungeons!
Me: That's the previous bandwagon. And what about the jerks?
I: Your online experience may vary. Seriously, there are jerks everywhere, that shouldn't keep you away from the dungeon finder. If you make sure you complete the regular versions before the heroic versions and make a minimum effort on gear and learning the instance, then you will usually find the dungeon finder a good experience. Yes there are jerks, but many of them only show their jerkiness if you are noobing it up in a dungeon too hard for your knowledge/skill/gear. Except in Scarlet Monastery -- for some reason, that level range is full of amazingly bad players with amazingly huge egos and amazingly poor attitudes. It would be an interesting academic study to figure out why exactly that is.
Me: So dailies and randoms. Yawn. Is casual WoW just repetition and grind these days?
I: There is plenty of entertainment to be mined out of Azeroth, as long as you don't just do the things that are dished up and served to you.
Me: Like?
Myself: Events!Me: The holidays are over for a while. Oh wait, is this just a plug for It came from the Blog?
I: Not exactly, but yes, the It came from the Blog events are a good example of the player-run events that often occur. We hold them monthly and announce them here on WoW.com and in the guild message on Zangarmarsh. Our Gurubashi Beatdown was too much fun, for example. But the other player run events are hard to find. Try your realm forums for upcoming player-run event announcements. Or come up with one yourself -- anyone can do it if you want to put in the time and effort. Also, The Classifieds will start listing player-run events from now on, so send any future ones that you know about to theclassifieds@wow.com.
Me: In before the LOLRP comments...
Myself: Roleplay!
I: Only a few player run events are roleplaying ones and those generally occur on RP servers because of the griefing factor. However, roleplaying is definitely a way to spice up your
Me: That's nice and all, but roleplaying isn't for everyone and I think a lot of people are done leveling before Cataclysm hits. What if a player wants to keep current characters but do something else with them?
Myself: AHPvP!
I: The Auction House is a game within a game for sure. Gold Capped, Time is Money and Insider Trader all have tips for maximizing your gold for fun. You could easily spend your time before the expansion trying to amass as much wealth as possible.
Me: Again, not for everybody.
Myself: Collecting!
I: This really is a good time to get some collecting done. Many things will go away in the expansion, and if you're bored anyway, why not collect pets, mounts, achievements -- whatever makes you happy.
Me: The real problem here seems to be that the expansion is looming but not close enough.
I: I think everyone should make a Cataclysm Bucket List.
Myself: A list! A list!
I: There are quests that will probably disappear, achievements that you won't be able to get or even just seeing the world before it is altered forever. I think it likely that we will get Cataclysm before BlizzCon, but it's still a few months off at least so we have time to get things done in Azeroth before we can't anymore. Even if you think you really don't care, I think it's worth a few minutes of making sure there is nothing you won't regret.
Me: But what if none of the above sounds fun?
Myself: Star Trek Online!
I: There are so many other games out there that if you really aren't having fun in Azeroth right now, it's the perfect time to go explore other worlds. Your characters and all their gear will still be here when you get back. And you shouldn't force yourself to spend your valuable leisure time doing something that isn't enjoyable to you right now. Our weekly WRUP always has a list of fun games we are playing when we're not playing WoW.
Me: Let's wrap this up.
I: Ok.
Myself: Have fun!

Course it still is. Otherwise why would I be here?
Jamie Mar 25th 2010 5:09PM
Actually, I haven't played WoW for several weeks due to life requiring a lot of my time, but I love to read WoW.com to keep in touch with the game I love/did love.
As for the game, ICC has been a lot of fun to raid casual, I'm sure eventually I would have got to the Lich King but the PvP changes added in the recent patch and the promise of the new exciting content gives me more hope of enjoying WoW in the future.
Outside of that, I'm a ret paladin who did top dps meters in our 10mans and I love to try new classes as I've been of my die hard paladin focus. Arcane Mage is great fun but then again I've always love to level.
So yes tldr version WoW is still fun, but the new content makes it even more exciting.

Because your desire to do something and your enjoyment of it are two separate things!
What we often see in drug addiction is that over time the addict's desire to use the drug (ie heroine) increases, while the pleasure they derive from it decreases.
The former psychological term for the increasing desire is "incentive value". So, the incentive value increases, pleasure (or fun, I guess) can simultaneously decrease. It's pretty neat, actually.

Meant "formal", not "former". Darn lack of edit button...

Lots of people stop having fun and stick around as a reaction to the thought of falling behind on the AH, or the chat kinda thing with pals hoping something happens. I do it myself when I don't feel like playing but come on to check patch notes and stay up to date/do my AH thing.
Personally I think if I'm sick of wow it means I'm sick of video games at the moment. There's pve, questing, alts, and pvp. In pvp there is capture the flag, hold the bases, etc. There's attacking cities. Exploring. Helping pals. Working on the twink. Collecting new items.
If none of those sound good to me it means video games don't sound good to me at the moment.
Ilunc Mar 25th 2010 5:09PM
Yeah for a while there I completely hated wow, burnout you could say. But I was a major player of twinks. So when they were removed it was like a kick to the head. But I am seeing if I still like it after 2 months if I hate it again. Back to purely Xbox
Jamie Mar 25th 2010 5:32PM
I was pretty burnt out on WoW pre-3.3 too many heroics and finally when we got into raiding the fun started again.
Random Mar 26th 2010 2:06AM
Removed? I must have missed that patch note...
Daethar Mar 26th 2010 9:52AM
They were "removed" when they put the changes to battleground xp in, with a no-xp bracket. Before the change, many twinks touted that it would be a nice change of pace to play someone decent and serious, to have a challenge for a change. Then after... many complain that no-xp battlegrounds take forever to queue, are never full, etc.
Then, the account twinks became the next big thing. Level 70s with no wrath currently dominate AV, making it a hellish situation where a full Sunwell/Brutal glad geared tank can literally hold off 10 level 69s in blues and greens.
So, no, twinking hasn't been removed, but this has proved that MOST (not all) twinks who said they really like a challenge were not being honest, and the result is that for everything but AV twinks are gone.
Zhiva Mar 25th 2010 5:09PM
No so fun after the patch.
1. Launch WoW
2. Log in
3. Get stuck at 100% loading screen
4. Kill WoW process
5. Launch WoW, log in, enter the world successfully
6. In few minutes all NPCs and PCs disappear, spells cannot be casted, you cannot log out or exit game because "Log out" and "exit game" buttons do nothing and you have to kill WoW process again.
7. Go to step 1.
To all "it's addons problem" people: I deleted Cache, Interface, WTF folders, nothing changed. And it's not just me. And I had exactly same problem on 3.3.3 PTR. And it's not just players from my ISP/neighborhood/country/continent, it's happening for players all over the world.
Vitos Mar 25th 2010 5:27PM
Its not addons. Its patch week! Welcome to WoW!
You get strange stuff happening during patch week. Once I had the champions from the first part of ToC5 come back to life during P2 of the Black Knight. It was interesting.
Know Mar 25th 2010 5:30PM
I'm 'all over the world' and it's not happening to me or any of my guildies. Have you run the repair tool to see if you have corrupted data files?
Hanak Mar 25th 2010 5:31PM
unfortunately, I have this problem too :(
I don't really understand how they missed it on the PTR though?
Zhiva Mar 25th 2010 5:34PM
Yes, I did run repair tool. I also tried rebooting router, flushing DNS, setting video settings to absolute minimum, everything.
Zhiva Mar 25th 2010 6:43PM
Now EU servers are scheduled for restart at 04:00 Paris time.
*crosses fingers*
Sl0th Mar 25th 2010 7:04PM
I've been having the same problem since the patch. What I ended up doing that seems to work (Though I have yet to try it during peak hours) is to go into my video options and turning most of the video options to minimum. Granted, most of mine were at the bare minimum for the game not to look like a bunch of amorphous blobs shooting colorful particles at one another. The view distance and the particle density seem to be the big sticking point for my system.
Zhiva Mar 26th 2010 2:11AM
Aaand... restart fixed nothing. /sigh
Joseph Smith Mar 30th 2010 2:11PM
They "missed" it on the PTR because it isn't a problem for everyone. It happens on my wife's computer but not mine, and it doesn't matter which account plays on whic computer. This means it's something unique to a specific hardware set. That her computer has and mine doesn't. Post your specifics on the bug forums so they can try to find the common thread and fix it.
Merrena Mar 25th 2010 5:12PM
For me personally WoW is starting to become a little boring. After 4 80s and a 76, leveling is kinda boring. PvP just about causes me to slit me wrists because I can't do anything without getting ganked by 8 different people with no help whatsoever and we always lose on my battlegroup. The only thing that is remotely entertaining is raiding, and even some nights I don't want to do that.
Cataclysm might change that and bring me back into the game, but if it doesn't i guess I'll just end up waiting till Star Wars: TOR releases for my new MMO friend.
Brian Mar 25th 2010 5:12PM
WoW, as always, is what you make of it. Five years in and I'm still having a blast - and amazingly enough still meeting truly new (as in just started playing wow now) players. I've had my ups and downs, as in anything else, but I'm content and happy every time I see that log in screen.
I've taken my vacations - visited warhammer, LotRo, still jump on EvE a few times a week, and unfortunately bought the collector edition of STO (pile of steaming trash be sure). But I never really step away from WoW. I figure it's got at least another 5 years of prime time play left in it. If Blizz keeps it fresh it could just keep going on and on, - the Simpsons and South Park have shown that you can attain longevity even in the age of ADHD lol.
