WoW Moviewatch: Yesterday's News
Did you check out the movie? For some reason, it didn't place in the Rise to Power contest. I don't really have any feedback about why, since those decisions aren't really publicized. I won't guess at why the video didn't manage to score a winning spot, but I can say some things about this video.
There's obviously a lot of machinima out there. Some of the stories are beautiful and compelling. Some of the artwork is technically and visually amazing. Almost all of it is artwork derived from the effort and vision of its creators. One of my favorite things about being the Moviewatch guy is that I regularly get exposure to an entire host of artists who create so many amazing things.
Yet, among all that artwork I get to see, Yesterday's News stands out as one of machinima's masterpieces. I could talk about the film's technique or composition details, but I'd rather focus on the emotion of the piece. There's no one I've talked to from the machinima community or mainstream WoW community who hasn't been moved by this piece.
Yesterday's News has absolutely floored person after person. This is because the video is about a universal human experience, and touches on that experience in a beautifully orchestrated manuscript. The music, the images, and the story are all strung together with subtle, wonderful poetry. It speaks to our fears, our hopes, and the inexorable forward motion of society and technology.
My hat's off to Slashdance. I don't know why you weren't chosen as a winner for the contest, but I do know that you've created something amazing. In the least, I hope you're (rightfulyl) proud of your work.

Uncle! I cannot withstand the slings and arrows of Mr. Gray and his many minions and admirers. I shall withdraw my challenge to Mr. Gray's honor and clarity.

that was so sad

Simply AMAZING! WOW!

This actually moved me to a little tear at the corner of me' eye. I liked some of the other winning Machini and a few of the winners I wondered if the judges woke up and decided that today, they would do things with ears closed and their good taste firmly left in bed.
And this not winning, even a runners up, and placarded that belief firmly into place.
How in Any Gods name could that Shmooky's horrid mess be chosen over this grand piece, just blows one's mind. Seriously.
Gray, I salute you sir and just remember that you not being chosen to win, means Nothing. Because here.. You are a winner.. I mean come on. I love blizzard but my toon still fights in a bikini thong. >. < They are not in their RIGHT minds =)

What? Seriously! This should have kicked the stupid no named video right out, that one dosen't even make sense, im mad enough that the no named one won over mine, I am very disappointed in Blizzard's choices.

That was lovely.
Thanks slashdance.

Its movies like these that should win contests, something that moves you emotionally and makes you think. For some reason I thought the Schinlder's list theme would be perfect for this movie rather than the piece, though beautiful, that was played.

How did that crap of clip of 'Vengeance' got chosen as a winner over this?
This made me feel more than the winners did.
Dreyja Mar 25th 2010 5:31PM
This was SO superior to the one that won. This is truely a beautiful and thoughtful work. It's all been said about why it may not have won but I think that, hands-down, it was a winning video!
/hats off!

Plus... MEGA POINTS for Dwarf protagonists! XD

Did anyone else notice the newspaper article that announced the LFG tool?
The author of the piece was "Ratt Mossi". *giggle*
GouledXD Mar 26th 2010 6:21PM
There are people who still use the Summoning stones, sure not a lot, but Vanilla Guilds don't use LFG thus they must use the summoning stones. He'll have large 40-man raiding guilds of level 60s, with no Draenei/Bloodelves or Deathknights, all Vanilla specced, and Geared (making them look like Medieval soldiers). He should move to The Blackrock mountain on my server (MoonGaurd [US]), and he shall never be sad again

I'm getting all verklempt!
Talk amongst yourselves; I'll give you a topic. A paladin is neither a pal nor a din. Discuss.
......there, I feel better.
wowcrendor Mar 25th 2010 8:26PM
That should have won. That's the type of movie I was hoping to see.
Rhyn Mar 25th 2010 8:41PM
It is a shame that didn't win. It is far and away the best entry I've seen. Really brilliant.
Turtell Mar 25th 2010 8:56PM
It may not have won, but I hope that some other machinima makers see this and see that the bar is now raised.

It's been a very long, stressful day for me. I just came home to read the latest news on WoW.com and heard about Blizzcon 2010. That brightened up my day but after watching this video it made my day. The music, the video, the story. After watching this I can say that my day hasn't been so bad after all.
Bryan Dare Mar 25th 2010 11:18PM
Awww. That was really good! =)
Zaniac Mar 26th 2010 3:01AM
Beautiful.
This moved me to tears in it's own subtle, yet very effective way of telling the story.

I've always liked the machinima from Slash Dance. They are head and shoulders above the rest.
I would go as far as saying Sedrin is probably the most talented WoW machinima artist by a long stretch.
