Russell Brower at Video Games Live

If you were planning to go to the Video Games Live performance on April 1st, now you have even more reason to go: Russell Brower, Director of Audio/Video for Blizzard, will be there. It's going to be (hopefully) shown on PBS in July, so if you just can't get down there, you can at least be on the lookout for it. If you like WoW's music (or that of other Blizzard games... I'm a huge sucker for Diablo II's soundtrack) it should be worth catching. If you happen to be in the area, tickets for the show are still available from Ticketmaster.

Is it me or does that picture look like someone cut his forehead?
Task Mar 27th 2010 6:50PM
Yes it does... and a very uneven attempt at that.

After reading how to access in game music (search this site for MPQ's) I learned one thing.
I love this man.
If I lived in Ousie Anna, I'd go. And I'd even bring a random person!
Alas, I do not.

I got a very nice e-mail from Mr. Brower regarding some questions I had about WoW's music.

Where in the world would a person find contact information for someone like that?
RetPallyJil Mar 27th 2010 10:59PM
By being clever and very polite.
JustinM Mar 29th 2010 2:51PM
Thanks a million. I have a legitimate question for him, but I've never been able to find his information. I guess I'll just continue asking Google politely, then, right, because asking here certainly didn't help me at all.
(And yeah, my original question *was* polite. Now I'm just pissed that you apparently think you have some sort of power over me.)
RetPallyJil Mar 29th 2010 6:36PM
You see? That's why I wouldn't share the information I got. I considered myself fortunate; you consider yourself entitled.
So take your attitude and shove it right up your twisting nether, jackass.
JustinM Mar 30th 2010 7:24PM
Entitled? I'm not entitled to anything.
Saying, "I don't feel comfortable giving that information out because it isn't mine to give," would have been more than fine. Instead, you had to imply that you were clever and polite and that I wasn't. You'd decided to be an ass about it as soon as I asked for so much as a hint.
All I really want to know is that if there exist study scores of his music and if so, whether they are for sale or whether he is only willing to give them to his own pupils. For all I know, he doesn't own the copyrights anyway and the question is moot. There are no demands here.
But frankly, I suspect dealing with Blizzard customer service will be both more fruitful and less frustrating than continuing to post in this thread.

Having seen VGL and talked to Russell when I got his autograph (feel free to be jealous now), it was totally worth it. VGL was just plain awesome, and while it was mostly things I had already seen/heard from WoW (if you played every zone and/or watch even a trailer for the game, you've seen/heard it), there was something amazing about seeing it live. The choir and symphony are usually local, so wherever you see it the majority of the performers are from that town. There are some hokey parts, but overall it was stunning and awe-inspiring. It made me want to go home and play WoW with the volume WAY too loud.
The rest of the show was great as well. I particularly enjoyed the "retro" gaming part. Now, every performance can be slightly different, with different games featured, but it was worth it. Also, if there is a major university in the town, they often have student tickets available through the school that are much cheaper, especially if said university is supplying the choir like the school here did. If you have a chance to see it, go. Also, their website has many tour dates, they may have one near you if you can't get there. Don't miss it!
PS Russell's favorite music in the game is Grizzly Hills if I remember correctly :)

It's great to be reminded about how much work has been put into the music for this game.
Makes me feel a little bit guilty for having the music turned off.
When I first started to play World of Warcraft, I quite enjoyed the music that would play in the night elf areas.
Unfortunately, turning off the music seems to be common among raiders and I'm often surprised to hear music coming through vent occasionally from other players. It reminds me that people experience this game in different ways.
I think I'll adjust my settings again to enable music to see what I've been missing out on.

I've had music turned off for a while, too, and I recently realized how much I missed it. I feel like I simply enjoyed the game much more while I still had music turned on.
I've become friends with Ctrl+M. I'll try to keep the music on whenever I'm leveling some of my smaller toons, or when I'm just running laps in Dalaran. :)

@Anye - ah, great reminder. Think I'll start using Ctrl+M more often as well. And lol @ running laps in Dalaran. I still find myself doing that whenever looking for something...I usually start running clockwise till I find what I'm looking for.
