Insider Trader: Review of Jewelcrafting in Wrath of the Lich King

What made jewelcrafting such a richly designed profession? First, the profession had an indirect gathering method. This kept the levelling field somewhat random, forcing you to choose your best path for progress over and over. Second doing a daily quest was a key portion of levelling jewelcrafting and learning your recipes. Third, the high level of customization of jewelcrafting profession-rewards gave jewelcrafters a lot of interesting choices.
Indirect Gathering
The indirect method of gathering jewelcrafting materials is worth mentioning. The issue here is that you can't just go out into the world and farm gems. Instead, you have to farm metal ore (or have someone farm it for you), and then you prospect that ore. Each time you prospect a stack of ore, you receive a random smattering of gems. Sure, the quality of gems change according to the metal type, but the color of gems you receive is random.
Why does that matter? It means you can't simply decide to do a little bit of farming and hope to get the exact materials you need. You can grab raw gems from the auction house, but those were rare and expensive at the beginning of the expansion. Anyone who wanted to level jewelcrafting needed those gems, and since the only people who can prospect are jewelcrafters, there weren't a lot of spares out there to be had. So, you were constantly learning the recipes for the gems you had, as opposed to farming the gems for the recipes you know.
Oh, sure, there's lot of jewelcrafting recipes. But that's the point. By virtue of constantly getting somewhat random levelling materials, you're "forced" to cycle through more recipes than the bare minimum to get by. You're constantly poking around in the different jewelcrafting categories.
In my experience, the random gems then make their way into guild banks and the auction house. It makes the tableau of available gems wider and more diverse than you would see if you could just level by firing through two hundred Bloodstones.
Dalaran Jewelcrafer's Token
Zach had an interesting article about the problem with Dalaran Jewelcrafter's Tokens back in December 2008. The issue with Dalaran Jewelcrafter's Tokens is that they're used to purchase any end-game recipes utilized by the jewelcrafter. And they're earned by completing the jewelcrafting daily by Timothy Jones.
The good news first. Jewelcrafters get their own random daily. It's a fairly easy daily. You go out into the world to find a creature type (revenant, vrykul, iron dwarf), and kill a handful of the critters until they drop the quest item. It really doesn't take long for the item to drop. The down side is that you do have to go out into the world to do that, and it usually takes you somewhat out of your way. It's not a big deal, the daily only takes about ten to fifteen minutes. Of course, by the time you've done it your 300th time, you might be a bit tired of the quests.
Dalaran Jewelcrafter's Tokens are the lifeblood of the profession. Your endgame recipes and your profession-specific gems both demand you spend between 1 to 4 tokens per item. It takes freaking forever to learn all the gem recipes.
Of course, that was a little bit on purpose. Blizzard wants players to rely on one another in order to get your gear fully gemmed. But if you're the kind of player who wants to complete their recipe list, this requirement can feel like one heck of a burden.
And not to play the grass-is-greener card, but jewelcrafting is the only profession that's gated this way. You had to log in every day, or else you missed your chance at doing your daily. Everyone else who spends tokens to learn recipes could, in theory, keep farming until they had enough tokens. Jewelcrafters had to log in every day.
That "every day" requirement wouldn't have been so bad if you didn't plain miss out every time you missed a day. If I had a busy week at work, and didn't get much play time until the weekend, I could have missed out on 5 tokens -- and there's no way to get that missed opportunity back.
If the designers re-use this daily-quest method in Cataclysm, I hope that they allow you to "store" your dailies. That way, if I did miss all week, I could catch up and run 5 on Saturday. I don't actually mind the gating aside from the missed opportunity issue.
Flexible Profession Bonus
We've talked a lot about profession specific bonuses before. Jewelcrafting not only gives a character stat-bonus like all the other professions, but that bonus is also incredibly flexible. Most of the profession bonuses are limited to about 80 attack power, 47 Spell Power, or about 60 Stamina. There's a few professions that have a different-but-equal bonus, but they all tend to be worth about the same.
Jewelcrafting, however, not only provides that character bonus, but also lets you customize it in nearly anyway you wish. Would you rather have Haste or Armor Penetration than Attack Power? Jewelcrafting can get that done for you. The jewelcrafter-only gem (Dragon's Eye) has all the same variety as regular gems, but with the additional juice of a profession bonus.
I actually think this should be nerfed a tad in Cataclysm. Or, even better, this level of customization should be shared with more of the other professions. The idea that jewelcrafting was considered the go-to profession for so many raid-roles in Wrath of the Lich King was kind of a bummer. Since professions are such a "genre" role for characters, making it such a no-brainer choice killed many of the other professions for a long time.
(As a note, Blacksmithing shared this customizability, since their profession bonus is a couple extra gem sockets.
Summary
So, in summary, there are three basic things about jewelcrafting I'm hoping for in Cataclysm. First, I hope the indirect gathering method is carried over into the new expansion. It made the craft interesting in Wrath, and I think it will do the same in Cataclysm. I do hope that the gating method, if continued, is handled in a way that players don't "miss out" by not logging in every day. Lastly, I hope the incredible flexibility of jewelcrafting is shared with the other professions, so that fewer players feel shoehorned into this craft.

Alchemy says "hey!". Engineering wanted me to pop in and say "hello" while I was here, and Inscription was too busy sulking to want to talk to me. You're not alone. Regardless, all the 226+ stuff is BoE and accessible to anyone with the cash. I'm not sure why this really matters. It would be nice to get some new recipes through the expansion like the armor crafting professions, but with professions like alchemy.... who knows?
*My* biggest problem with the Jewelcrafting tokens was that not only were there hundreds of recipes, but that it takes forever to get them all. Theoretically I could buy 40 titanium powder for ~1200 gold, or 4 damaged necklaces for about the same price for EACH epic gem recipe. Then there's 3 tokens each for the rare recipes, 6 each for the jewelry, 5 each for the metas..... it's overwhelming.
The problem with needing to go to other people for help is that unless you're in a guild with multiple dedicated (and/or rich) Jewelcrafters at the beginning of the expansion, most people are just going to start off with the cuts they'll need themselves (Dragon's Eye cuts and whatever applies to their class), then the most popular cuts so they can actually make money. It's fine as an idea, but it doesn't work out in practice for most people.

To be fair, enchanting hasn't gotten anything new since Ulduar (and only two new enchants there, Blood Draining and Blade Ward).
Sure, some enchants have been changed/updated/nerfed/what have you in that time, but enchanting's been the same old same old since 3.1

@BenMS
I wholeheartedly agree; it would be nice to be able to craft some sort of higher tier necklace/rings, particularly given my lack of love from the RNG gods with regards to drops/rolls.
Speaking of the RNG, I personally, would also like to see the prospecting standardised a little bit more. It makes me sad when I prospect multiple stacks of Titanium Ore, only to get a smattering of green-quality gems, a ton of blue-quality gems, and maybe - maybe! - an epic gem or titanium powder or two. Of course I have the same sad luck with Icy Prisms, so maybe it really is just me.
Still, it would be nice, and make a lot of sense, if Coblat Ore always gave you green gems, with a chance at a blue, Saronite always blue with a chance at an epic, and Titanium one epic, with random blues/powder. I imagine this would also help to stabilise (*cough*lower*cough*) the price of gems on servers, which would make a lot of people happy, as well as aid those leveling jewelcrafting - you might not get exactly what you want, but you'll at least get something you could use to eke out a point or two.

@BenMS- This has been a long term gripe for me since the release of 3.1, why were there no 226/245 craftable rings/necklaces/trinkets... It definitely would have made sense for them to be there. Though I will say with the Ashen Verdict rings I could understand why they would have been missing from 3.3 and its gear level.
@Alithoe- While I share your pain, and definitely think the 'gated' design was a bit too slow it was a DRASTIC improvement over BC era JCing. For those that have forgotten most of the patterns were random BoE types of items that i would often see going for 500-1500g on my server for the Rare cuts (damned Runed/Teardrop cuts were the bane of my existence) and this was really changed until the introduction of 2.4 and the ability to buy Epic cuts from a Shattered Sun Vendor.
So if they can just find a good comprimise between the gating of wrath and pure rng of BC i'll be a happy camper.

"Every" other profession? Where are my ilevel226-ilevel245 items I can craft with alchemy? Am I missing something?
Any profession drops for alchemy yet? No? Didn't think so... -.-
Sinthar Mar 30th 2010 6:06AM
@ CrimsonEyedDeath
Actually we did get a new spell mate - there was a new fishing enchant that dropped of the fishermen in DB. Not exactly game breaking i know - and ive chanted it precisly once (my own gear). Personally i would like to see more chant love as well. Ive got almost every recipe - but just dont get enough time to grind AQ40 and MC for the last few im missing (got all TBC and Wrath)
Id also like to say that JC'ers made - and still make - more cash from their profession than any other profession i know - yes i know its been watered down hugely from the original vast profit that was made - mosty due to the fact nearly everyone made a JC to earn cash/cut own gems. I know 2 gold capped people, and they both made nearly all their wealth from cutting gems and posting them on the AH, but to be fair i have to say that the people who made the most - were the ones doing the dailys EVERY day, and buying raw gems and the various JC items off the AH as well as grinding ore and prospecting it.
spamofchaz Mar 30th 2010 12:16PM
JC, chanting, and alchy all have items that are still useful in current content whereas BS, engineering, LW and tailoring did not. They needed to have new recipes added in or else they would lose any incentive for players to grab them.
Alchy is the only profession that hasn't had any new recipes added in a patch (I think), but the others have - JC had the epic gems and chanting had some top-level chants added in (during patches where the other professions got nothing iirc).
bmiller Mar 29th 2010 5:20PM
I wouldn't change anything about JC it's just right. Making the JC only gems non-prismatic seemed like a nerf at the time, but I have no complaints.
The broken necklace and titanium dust gives some JCs a way to catch up or get ahead, albeit a very expensive one.
Alchemy has a 3 day cooldown for the research, but the result is random. The Inscription research is also random. I really do not want to see this happen to JC.
Task Mar 29th 2010 5:21PM
Mr. Gray, you neglected to mention the Damaged Necklace world drop that appears in Northrend when you are at least level 77 and have 450 (455 if you are Draenei)... That's another part of the fun Jewelcrafting in Wrath.
Binya Mar 29th 2010 6:59PM
The Damaged Necklace is a Northrend-world drop for ANYONE, regardless of JC skill level. I've gotten a few on both my Draenei (Tailor/Scribe) and Druid (Herb/Alchy). They're the equivalent of Glyph Mastery books, only with a far crappier drop rate (from my experience).
Arladris Mar 29th 2010 8:25PM
I have NEVER seen a Damaged Necklace drop, ever. Not once on any of my three 80's.
I don't know what the drop rate is, but it must 0.0001%.
Paulio Mar 29th 2010 8:44PM
Just bad RNG joss if you haven't seen a [damaged necklass] drop. My main isn't a JC and yet he's seen a couple of drops for this item (both times in Storm Peaks.)
Sinthar Mar 30th 2010 6:07AM
I must be getting someones drop rate added to my own then - i havent got a JC and ive had at least 8-10 drop in the last 4-6 weeks. I usually just donate them to one of the two guild JC'ers.
Scott Clark Mar 29th 2010 5:23PM
Blizzard have said that they don't want players to feel that they have to log in every single day - see their comments regarding frost badges for daily randoms. However, given that they have some mechanism of "x opportunities per unit time" I'm not sure storing up opportunities is a reasonable fix to that feeling of grindiness. Should a player who dinged 80 three weeks after Wrath was released, expect 3 bonus Naxx lockouts that could be spent when she had the time? If I couldn't find an ICC25 pug this week, should I get two lockouts next week? If Alliance on my server is particularly under-represented in PvP should I get credits for free VoA resets?
I expect that we're more likely to see solutions like those they implemented for WG dailies (converting them to weeklies with larger rewards) or random dungeons (repeatable but with greater rewards for the first completion per unit time) so that players feel that they need to check in frequently, but not necessarily daily. Then again, this is a profession - I rather expect that they will retain the daily nature of it and even extend that paradigm to other professions and, instead, put their efforts into bootstrapping newcomers to the profession. I came to JC late in the expansion (for raiding reasons, natch) but the collector in me will likely never be able to catch up enough to obtain all of the blue-quality cuts that have relatively little use now.
prenden2 Mar 29th 2010 5:28PM
Jewelcrafting or: How I learned to stop worrying and love free gold.
Greatest profession imo in terms of reward to time-invested ratio.
Scott Mar 29th 2010 5:49PM
While I'd love to see JC follow the path of learning recipes similar to Scribes, I don't see the masses understanding just why us JCers can't cut the latest tanking/healing/zomg-epic cuts until RNG fortunes us. When the masses know of certain cuts are avail, they tend to want them ASAP rather than wait it out.
The current system does need reworking though as the number of gems required for the dailies can quickly pile up. It's easy if you keep up on mining or have a guild willing to pass cuts, but if you start slacking the time between learning cuts becomes longer and longer.
Hal Mar 29th 2010 5:30PM
I'm just curious if this will change once Cataclysm debuts. I have a lvl 30ish shaman with jewelcrafting. When he gets into Northrend, am I going to have to spend weeks doing the daily JC quest so that he can get to crafting Cataclysm-recipes? I sincerely hope not.
Evlyxx Mar 29th 2010 7:19PM
If you want the recipes you could do the dailies but the price of the Titanium Ore will be loads lower than the 300g per stack on Shadowsong EU at least. But ofc it is likely the next expansion will give us newer generation of gems at 85 giving you little to no reason to grab the 73 epic gem recipes from Northrend.
Boobah Mar 30th 2010 11:47AM
You'll be able to use trainer-gained recipes to get up to 425 fairly easily, and (assuming Blizz uses the Wrath model for tradeskills rather than the BC one) at 425 you'll be able to start getting the green-quality cataclysm gem/jewelry.
BadAndyMk3 Mar 29th 2010 5:31PM
Actually, I WISH that blacksmithing had a similar methood as JCing. I'd gladly do a daily BS quest and save up tokens for good (200+ ilevel) BS plans.
