Breakfast Topic: The all nighter

Today's topic is one many readers will be familiar with, as we have all done it at one point or another: the all nighter. I remember one time back in vanilla WoW, one night me and my guild mates were bored so about 10 of us decided to climb the mountain that houses Ironforge. This quickly evolved into all of us throwing random ideas out at once of other of places we could go explore that weren't (cough cough) exactly live in game yet. After hours of exploration we finally ended up climbing the Silithus wall to see what was on the other side, cracking jokes and laughing the entire night and taking photos to have a kind of "we shouldn't be here" travel log. I remember finally logging off after having what amounted to one of my most favorite times in the game sitting in front of my house and contemplating what to have for breakfast, sleep deprived but with a stupid grin on my face.
So I ask all of you, what is that story for you? What adventure kept you up well past any sane hour playing the game? Was it a raid? A marathon PvP session? What kept you up all night playing WoW?

My first and only all nighter on WoW was camping Humar on my first hunter back in Vanilla. I remember taming him at about 4 am, and I was so excited I couldn't possibly fall asleep so I just started my day early. Then of course I passed out later that day and slept for about 14 hours straight. But it was worth it.

Ha Sel, this is mine too. I camped one night from 2am-8am. Popped in a movie and turned my monitor toward the couch. This was back before npcscan too. I got up and was about to log out when he spawned in front of me! Took me a second to realize it, I was so tired, lol. I was level 23 and it was the first thing I did when I dinged.

I started playing with 4 friends at the same time, those first few levels learning how big the game really was... At about level 17-18 we all ran our first dungeon together, one of us had played before and had rerolled to level with the rest.
After that run of deadmines and some blue quality items replacing some grey/white items or filling empty slots we had so much fun we decided to go exploring what other loot filled elites were out there... needless to say by the time morning rolled around we were running the stormwind stockades as a group of 23-24s which was a significant effort for people who didn't know that you didn't want agi as a priest. Or that balance Druids didn't need to use strength maces to cast spells
better.

memorable all-nighter.

/ ZOMG DK....so easy...so fun.../switches main
/smacked by guild leader
/grinds Mage...hmm maybe I'll be realm first 80 Mage?
/ZOMG death an decayyyy!!
/boring Mage...realm 2nd or third Mage.
Could have quite possibly been referred to as the "all-weeker."

My only all-nighters (or at least until 4 or 5 AM) were in the original EverQuest, and they all involved just chatting with people. We were too busy having a great conversation to worry about killing things.

My first all nighter was back when Alterac Valley first came out, and I finally got to level 51 and was able to queue up for it. I got in around 10 PM, and I remember fighting all the way up to I think 6 AM or so (still have screenshots somewhere of me and my PvP buddy for the battle watching the sun rise in game). Truly, one the most epic and awesome nights of gaming I've ever had.

halloweentowne Mar 30th 2010 9:05AM
wow, my pally alt got that on my first run, i didnt realize it was hard to get until a friend of mine said he never got it after like 30 runs and gave up
Elleyna Mar 30th 2010 10:10AM
It took me about 10 runs or so to get it and that was with a hunter rolling need on it to improve his gearscore...
Shima Mar 30th 2010 8:19AM
I used to be a "just one more level" guy, but then something got awfully wrong and I get a job...
now i'm lucky if I'm still playing after 2 am in mid weeks...that destroyed my life D: I hate work
my last warrior took me about two months to turn her 80. at least gearing her it's not that demanding, cuz she's a tank :D

It was actually something a bit similar.
Way back in the second half of BC, I was still leveling my character, who was around level 45, if I remember right. A level 70 friend of mine was bored and asked me if I'd like to go raid Darnassus with him, purely for kicks and giggles. Being a level 45 Troll priest, I had never even seen a major Alliance town before, so I instantly took up the offer, taking another friend along who was about my level as well.
I still remember that night, it was definitely one of my most favorite times I've ever spent on WoW. Just us three trying to sneak into Darnassus, my friend protecting us low levels as best as he could, running from enemies that had much faster mounts than we did, and finally escaping by jumping off of the massive tree (and hitting a branch on the way down).
When we all decided to call it a night, I remember logging off and realizing that my room had a faint light in it. And after looking out the window, saw a great sunrise. I had no idea that that much time had passed, but I remember feeling awesome, just because of the great time we had had.

The only all-nighter I've ever done was accidental. My first-time in BRD, with a half-crazed Italian beartank, with poor English, and the rest of us, who'd never seen the place before. Went in about 10pm, didn't get out til about 8am.
Luci Mar 30th 2010 9:02AM
That SUCKS macster. Don't you just hate it when some wiseguy has to light all the fires too after you say, "Okay, don't light the fires RIGHT HERE no matter what you do..."

"Don't you just hate it when some wiseguy has to light all the fires too after you say, "Okay, don't light the fires RIGHT HERE no matter what you do...""
I think you're thinking of BFD (Blackfathom Deeps), where you only want to light the fires one at a time and only when the tank is ready. Now BRD (Blackrock Depths), where it's practically impossible to light both fires at the same time, which is really bad because you'd like to. An all-nighter in BFD would be insane and pointless. On the other hand, an all-nighter in BRD is all too tragically plausible, at least back in vanilla.
misterhoulihan Mar 30th 2010 10:06AM
The original BRD was epic beyond epic. I'm with you macster!
protopethunter Mar 30th 2010 12:02PM
to this day BRD remains my favorite instance. I remember leveling from 51- 57 almost entirely in there on my hunter with another bm hunter(i was bm at the time) we would go in without a healer and take down almost every boss in there just the two of us. I especially remember telling a druid friend about this when he helped us do the mc attunement(fire eles were our weakness). He was dead serious when he asked us if we were hackers for getting that much of the place done.
