MMO Roundup: Betas, patches, trailers and vampires
Sometimes you'd like to know that there are other MMOs out there, right? It's not all WoW, all the time! Our sister site Massively can provide you with everything you need to know about all of the other MMOs around, past, present and future.
SWTOR testing portal discovered, confirmed by BioWare Few communities are as enthusiastic about their upcoming MMO as the one surrounding Star Wars: The Old Republic. Recently, they found what appeared to be a testing portal for the game and the discovery created a fervor of speculation and discussion on the official forums -- mostly surrounding whether or not beta was near.

Funcom teases new Secret World trailer We here at Massively aren't ashamed to admit that we're looking forward to The Secret World. Between our sit-down with Ragnar Tornquist at GDC10 and the juicy bits of into slowly making their way out of the game's unofficial web sites, we're, to put it mildly, stoked. The new trailer features a healthy dose of story-based voiceover, glimpses of combat gameplay, and oh yeah, player characters shooting fire from their hands and hacking away with samurai swords.

ArenaNet releases fourth Guild Wars 2 concept art video Guild Wars concept art has always been known for being the best in the business, and this latest video chock full of Guild Wars 2 art is no exception. It's worth a view, even if you're not much of a Guild Wars fan yourself.
TERA unleashes trailer on the masses The upcoming action RPG fantasy MMO TERA from Bluehole Studio and En Masse Entertainment definitely caught our eyes at GDC 2010. While our fearless leader Shawn got a chance for (several) hands-on sessions with this intriguing new title, the trailer from GDC has come out today for the rest of us who weren't so fortunate as to make it to the conference. What is most impressive about this trailer to us (beyond the fact that nobody seems to fall out of those skimpy metal bikinis) is that the footage was created using all in-game resources.

IGG introduces vampire MMO Moonlight Online It's no Twilight, but that's probably a good thing. IGG has recently announced Moonlight Online, an MMO based around supernatural stories and environments. Become a vampire, topple empires with your supernatural abilities, and declare war on werewolves. Sounds like a good time!

Star Trek Online launches massive Season One patch The list of updates is impressively long and several of them address player griefs with areas like Klingon ship customization and mission variety. This is also the first patch bringing some PvE missions for Klingon players, which was a sticking point with many at launch. But Season One also brings captain respecs as well for players unhappy with their skill load-out -- an essential feature that's been sorely missed by many. |
PAX East 2010: City of Heroes panel reveals many things Unpacking the City of Heroes panel at PAX East is a big deal: there were huge amounts of information being thrown around, and a lot of new pieces of information to process. For that matter, there was far more than anyone expected, with information about the full spread of new issues up to Issue 19 and the reveal of Matt "Positron" Miller's heretofore unrevealed new endgame system. The panel as a whole featured a huge breadth of information about the game from concept into the future, and was filled with people long before the official start time.

(peeks in to see if Byron is in here playing STO, gets distracted by SWTOR for a moment, continues on)
BYYYYYYYRONNNNNN?
Definitely stealthed. Who knew Tauren could be so sneaky?
Alex Ziebart Mar 30th 2010 4:16PM
Byron is going to be a little bit late this week, Kelly is being slammed with non-comic work.
Tokkar Mar 30th 2010 4:19PM
Thanks, Alex! I was getting concerned - she's been very...scratch that...V-E-R-Y stressed lately, judging by what she's been tweeting. Just wanted to send some Byron love her way :-)

ArenaNet's artists surely are some of the best in the business for concepts but actual solid Guild Wars 2 stuff has always been light at best.
Another note the summary text for this article is discussing the Star Wars MMO not the Guild Wars 2 concept art video.
Alex Ziebart Mar 30th 2010 4:15PM
That was a copy/paste fail on my part. Fixed!

Blizzard had the luxary of time, and a lack of competition. Everything Bioware does will be compared to WOW. Just a fact. If SWTOR is not perfect at launch, they will not get a chance to fix it before people leave.
Just like what happened to Warhammer.
jfofla Mar 30th 2010 4:12PM
Age of Conan
Warhammer
Aion
SWTOR
Just another wannabe WOW
RogueJedi86 Mar 30th 2010 4:23PM
And how many of those other MMOs were developed by a company who has had a great history of making nothing but great RPGs for the past 15 years? None of them? So it's just BioWare. Yeah. BioWare has the caliber to make a great MMO, like SWTOR, to threaten WoW. I have the highest faith in them. They've never give me reason to think they can ever make a bad game.
Just look at how BioWare has made a point of not announcing a feature for TOR until it's in the game and is guaranteed to be in the game. They're definitely not making empty promises. Other developers could stand to learn from them. *glares at the dance studios that were announced years before they were even remotely playable or show-off-able*
Need proof? Read this post by one of the people behind TOR:
http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?p=2693501#edit2693501
So yeah, I have the utmost faith in BioWare's development of TOR. Take the trolling about a "wannabe WoW" elsewhere.
jfofla Mar 30th 2010 5:17PM
Please list the successful MMOs Bioware has produced.
Edge Mar 30th 2010 7:10PM
And what successful MMOs had Blizzard done before WoW exactly?
Superthrust Mar 30th 2010 9:14PM
@jfofla
Lets see...The following ARE NOT MMO's but they do have some online mods being worked on (I helped with the networking on one of them) by the community:
Oblivion
Morrowind
DAO
Knights of the old Republic 1 & 2
Mass Effect 1 & 2
And here are some MMO's made by bioware. (Note, not actual MMO's but RPG's with online features with a mass amount of folks. I haven't played these 2 but i know they are still loved by certain folk, making them successful at a time and still to this date among some. If anyone knows if they "count as mmo's" please comment?)
Neverwinter Nights
Baldur's Gate
So...what were you saying again?
Grovinofdarkhour Mar 30th 2010 4:13PM
Other MMOs...?
Tethra Mar 30th 2010 4:28PM
I can't wait to try out SWTOR. Gotta give BioWare some love, as I live in Edmonton.
Tridus Mar 30th 2010 4:41PM
Failcom is still making games?
Crystaleth Mar 30th 2010 5:31PM
Yeah right, the same company that made Anarchy Online, a game that has had some bugs in it for so long they became features. (had some of the best player classes tho, fixer ftw)
bep4815 Mar 30th 2010 9:00PM
i'd be switching to SWTOR if it was gonna be for mac. but instead, blizz will continue to receive my moneyz.
