Here's one way I make money with JC. Hang out in trade chat and every couple minutes link up your skill and say that you're looking for work. Eventually you'll get a whisper from somebody looking to have some gems cut (usually epic gems). Tell them the first cut is free but every cut after that is 10G (seems to be a price that nobody argues with on my realm - yours may vary). Meet up with your customer and be friendly. Let them know that you'd be willing to purchase plans for any gems they may want but you don't yet currently have. Having a stockpile of daily JC tokens helps this, so make sure you do that EVERY DAY. You might be able to get away with charging customers to purchase new recipes because let's face it...four days is a long time to purchase a new recipe. Explain to them that it's basically like having a 4 day cooldown, and such things aren't free. However, as a JCer doing business, you should try to get all of the useful cuts eventually anyway. Going out of your way to buy a specific cut for a customer goes a LONG way in a business/customer relationship. Offer an incentive for them to keep you as their personal gem cutter. I charge 10G per cut and every 10th cut is free. I keep a spreadsheet of my customers and keep track of how many gems I cut. Let them know that when they are 5 gems in when you're mailing them their gems or partying up to cut gems for them in person."by the way, you're 5 cuts away from your 10th free cut". This gives them a reason to keep doing business with you and reminds them that they are working towards a deal.Periodic incentives: Offer discounted gem cuts on holidays or certain days of the week. For example implement a "8G per cut every saturday" or some other strategy into your business. I offer discounted cuts for my customers on the last 5 days of each month. Be creative. Most of my customers mail me 10G with their uncut gems. Some have trust issues and only contact me when I'm online. Either way I'm making 10G per cut even when I'm not even signed in! Just be patient and be friendly with people. You'll only have a couple customers at first but if you're diligent you'll soon have a nice large customer base. Keep expanding your offering of gems and treat it like a real business, because that's what it is. WoW players expect good customer service too!
