I'm a firm believer in letting people bury themselves. If he did do something awful or is truly hiding out, it will come out soon enough. I mean he doesn't know you that well and here he is confiding in you. He'll 'confide' in several more people probably in short order and it will all over with. Some people can't help but tell on themselves.
