Spiritual Guidance: Priest PvP 101, Page 2

PvP talents
Discipline is the spec of choice for healing priests in PvP, but don't feel like you absolutely must go deep discipline. This video features an astoundingly skilled priest playing a hybrid discipline/holy spec in PvP. I highy recommend watching it. He utilizes Body and Soul and Lightwell (and makes me swoon in the process; not quite like Frostheim, but similar). It might be inaccessible to a newbie PvPer to play like that, but it's something you can certainly push yourself toward.
Anyway, you can learn about the basics of Holy and Disc in their respective 101 articles. For this PvP guide, I will be primarily examining PvP talents, particularly survival talents. As a novice PvPer, your biggest challenge will be staying alive, so I recommend skipping most of the offensive talents and go for pure survival. That means taking talents like:
- Unbreakable Will This could easily be the most important PvP talent to take. Without it, you will be dead or nearly dead by the time an incapacitating ability wears off.
- Silent Resolve I personally never take this talent because it doesn't seem to matter if I have it or not. If an enemy is spamming dispel on me, he will succeed at dispelling all of them. All the same, this talent is an option.
- Martyrdom When a melee class is on top of you, this is one of the talents that will let you heal yourself through it. You will see priests who don't take it, but they are far from novices.
- Focused Will This is a nice passive buff to your crit that will simultaneously help you keep yourself alive through an onslaught. Notice that it stacks, so it's really quite significant.
- Spell Warding This is your defensive counter to caster classes. Don't underestimate it. Many classes, even melee class, have spell damage which you can reduce with these talents.
- Blessed Recovery I would take this with the least priority. I never got much out of it, and it's rather universally viewed as "meh."
- Blessed Resilience This is a pretty deep holy talent, but since it is a PvP talent I thought I'd mention it. I can't vouch for its performance, but I'd imagine that if you get a proc, it would be great for surviving rogue openers.
As I said eariler, mana will be a big issues, so regen talents like Meditation are essential to not running out of mana. Talents that reduce the cost of certain spells, like Mental Agility and Absolution, are also going to be a great aid. Absolution in particular is useful, since one of the most important things a priest can do is dispel, both offensively and defensively.
As you get more comfortable (and more gear), you can drop the survival talents you don't like for abilities that increase your utility like Focused Power, Divine Fury and Improved Mana Burn. Keep in mind, though, that Mana Burn doesn't get much use in battlegrounds.
The video I linked gives a nice sample spec for holy, so if you are going to go down the holy path, work from that. If you'd like a starting spec for discipline, try this one. (Disclaimer: This spec uses Inspiration and Divine Aegis, which requires your spells to crit to be effective. The gear I recommended earlier has no crit on it, so only use this spec if you are mixing in your PvE gear. If you have a full set of PvP gear, you should not take Inspiration and Divine Aegis. Move those six talent points where ever else you please.) This is not a spec you'll keep for you entire PvP career, but it will get you started.
How to get started
- Battlegrounds I recommend you start in battlegrounds before you sacrifice yourself to the arena gods. (The new battleground finder will also help you out with your gear grind.) When in a battleground, stick close to your teammates and try not to let enemy players separate you from the group. With the spec I supplied earlier, you won't have much offensive capability, so focus on winning through healing. In large battlegrounds, holy priests have a great advantage in being able to heal large groups of people and blend into the crowd. Just watch out for enemy AoE when you stand in large groups. In smaller battlegrounds, scope out a DPS class (a charming hunter, perhaps?) and follow him around. The two of you can keep each other alive, and in doing so, you'll learn more about the other class in the process. (If you do happen to pair up with a hunter, Frostheim reminds me that you should not stick too close, since hunters can't shoot their targets at close range. For some classes though, like paladins and rogues, it helps to stay close.)
- Arena I do not recommend starting your first PvP adventures in arena. The first steps into an arena are an article in itself, so we will save that for later. If you are curious though, Arena Junkies is a good external source to start with.
- Dueling This is a great starting alternative to arena. You can find it outside major cities like Orgrimmar and Stormwind. In dueling, you'll be able to learn how other classes work and how to fight them. I learned a lot this way when I first start playing, and not just by doing the dueling myself. Watching other players fight is a good way to pick up tactics and learn the game. Feel free to ask questions; there are actually a lot of helpful players who love to explain the game, if you let them. Don't be fooled by the stereotype of the elitist jerk PvPer (but don't harass players who clearly don't want to talk, either.)
This is the hardest section to write, and sadly I feel it may end up being the least fleshed-out. If you noticed the graphic at the top of page 1, this is the mysterious Phase 2. You see, there is no priority or rotation in PvP; it's all about thinking on your feet. I will try to supply you with some pointers.
- Keep a Power Word: Shield, Prayer of Mending and Renew on yourself at all times.
- Fully buff yourself every time you respawn and keep an eye on your buffs in case they get dispelled -- Fear Ward, especially. Don't forget you have it.
- If you can, stay out of range of melee class enemies. For ranged classes, try to break line of sight as much as you can.
- If find yourself in range of a melee class, try not to turn your back to him. Many abilities require the player be behind their target to use them.
- If you can't break line of sight with a ranged class, try to run behind him so he has to spend time turning to target and attack you.
- If you see an enemy coming toward you, DoT him as soon as he's in range to put him in combat. Rogues and druids both have openers that require them to be out of combat to use. For all other classes, the DoTs will just give you a head start on damaging them before they get to you.
- Use Dispel Magic to offensively dispel your enemy's buffs and HoTs. This is a great way to level the playing field when you're solo; when you're in a group, it will help your allies kill an enemy opponent faster.
- Dispel Magic is also good for friendly dispelling. By getting debuffs off yourself and your teammates quickly, you will reduce the amount of healing you have to do. You can also dispel incapacitating abilities like a paladin's Hammer of Justice. Watch out for a warlock's Unstable Affliction or a shadow priest's Vampiric Touch, though, since they can both deal damage when dispelled.
- Abolish Disease is another dispel you'll have to juggle. Use it on friendly targets just as you would Dispel Magic. It's particularly useful when fighting death knights, since death knights specs use their diseases to heal themselves.
- Fade isn't useless, but its utility is limited. If you find a hunter or warlock pet is on you, summon your Shadowfiend then use fade to drop aggro and get away.
- You can break a Polymorph preemptively by casting Shadow Word: Death on the mage casting the ability.
- Shackle Undead can be used on death knight pets, especially their very powerful Gargoyles.
- You can use Mass Dispel to get rid of a paladin's Divine Shield or a mage's Ice Block.
- Rogues I know it seems strange that one class would require a special section, but they really do deserve some attention as the priest's unofficial counter class. Rogues are the primary reason you want to keep your shields and HoTs on yourself at all times, since rogues attack with surprise. In arena, they will often wait for a careless priest to let her shield fall off before attacking. Don't leave yourself open to that by being careless! When a rogue does open up his attacks on you, try to outlive his stuns without using your trinket. Just keep spamming a new shield or an instant heal on yourself so when the stun breaks, you can save yourself. (If you're a disc priest with Glyph of Pain Suppression, you can use Pain Suppression while stunned.) A rogue's Blind is one of the most dangerous things he can do, as it will allow him to get out of combat and reopen his attacks on you. Thus, save your trinket for the Blind so you can keep him in combat. An alternative to healing when the stun breaks is to use Psychic Scream and then DoT him with your offensive abilities, especially Devouring Plague. Refresh your shields, HoTs and ProM. If things are desperate, Holy Nova him until you have enough health that you can spare a moment to heal yourself. Just watch out for his kicks.
I'd like to remind PvP pros once more to hit the comments. The endless amounts of tips and tricks that could be supplied will not easily fit in one article, so please share!
To those of you who are new to it all, let me know if you have any questions. If I can't answer them (which is entirely possible when it comes to PvP), I will try to get you to the right resource that can. I'll remind you again that the reason I wrote this article was to try and encourage players, especially raiders, to find their full potential by experiencing their class in every aspect they can. I hope you'll consider it.

2 things:
1. Bacon is win, we have bacon kill points in my guild. Especially when its the answer to every question asked.
and
2. Does Frostheim make you swoon because he's a hunter or is it his name? :P
On a separate note, I'd treat PvP as I do with quest/daily grinding, just go until you want to stop, then pick it up again when you are on again.
Frostheim Apr 5th 2010 12:18AM
Hunter prowess can be intoxicating stuff, and is known to have that effect on priests. Not sure if it's the big guns, fierce beasts, or just rugged dwarven good looks.
...'cause it can't just be the name, right? Right?

@ Frostheim
I think its all that AND your name... ;)

I enjoyed your article.
As a level 79 priest who has pvp'd since 19, I feel comfortable adding a few things:
1) The frostsavage armor set has pitiful spirit. As a disc healer, I'm always oom after an intense fight. I then run in and suicide myself.
2) Many of our spells apply to others as well as ourselves, so know how to 'alt-buttonpush' to ensure you're casting on yourself. F'rinstance: Penance. If you're casting it while you're being attacked, it will be an offensive spell - this is not your likely intent. alt-penance (given standard UI) casts it on you! yay. Same with dispel magic.
3) How do you kill a resto druid? Mana burn. repeat. Dispell their innervate. (I have an 80 arena tree and I hate mana burn). I thusly keep improved mana burn. I'd assume killing a resto shammy is similar, but I don't know.
4) Racials for Hordies: I used to be an undead priest, back when undead was the only class to have devouring plague. (remember that?) I recently went Belf for a few reasons
1) I wanted to ride a pink chicken
2) I like the silence effect that the belf racial has as disc. It is I believe our only silence.
(If I did shadow pvp I might've stayed undead since they have silence).
3) If I had an ally, I would go human.
5) STAY IN A CROWD.
6) Personally, when it looks bad in a crowd , I spam holy nova. It can trigger bubbles, and its instant.
7) Holy Nova unstealths rogues. Great for defending a flag
8) I recently discovered the magic of 'target of target' in the UI menu. This rocks for PVP. you can see who is getting clobbered by the rogue and bubble / penance / renew them from a distance.
9) Dont forget your snares are often dispellable (sp) with dispel magic. except infected wounds. Which I don't think is a disease, though it should be. I mean . . think about it.
10) when a DK pulls me in, I psychic scream, then root their annoying pet. then I skedaddle.
and lastly:
11) Bind levitate to a key. .. its awesome for hanging out on the roof and floating in (wsg) . .. or jumping from LM to BS and healing in mid air. I often /s "Hi, I just flew in and boy are my arms tired".
I have an ICC geared 80 resto druid that has good arena exp, but I love my priest more for pvp these days! Its fun if you don't mind dying alot.
By the way, trees get targeted more than priests in my opinion, perhaps cuz they look . . . like broccoli. At least I look like a generic belf.
Thanks for the great article!

6) Personally, when it looks bad in a crowd , I spam holy nova. It can trigger bubbles, and its instant.
Just as a heads up, spamming holy nova in crowds is not as advantageous as you may believe. It can be very costly in terms of mana, and you have to consider that holy nova only affect you and your PARTY members. Presumably that the "crowds" you're talking about are usually found in the bigger battlegrounds consisting of 15+ raid members. In my experience (in pug groups at least) groups within raids rarely stick together. You could be there spamming holy nova only healing yourself and maybe 1 or 2 other party members, while the rest of the raid around you dies.

@ Xaklo
Thank you for the advice. I'm curious, do you have any suggestions for 'damn, I'm gonna die moments, lets maximize my remaining seconds?' (on my druid its tranquility which gets everyone to pay attention to the druid!)
(when I wrote this I was thinking of the wsg flagroom when they zerg us). Appreciate the fact that in AV, this would not be as helpful. TY
Xaklo Apr 6th 2010 12:20AM
Well, if you talent into Desperate prayer, those moments should just change to "Damn, I ALMOST died." haha. but if that spell is on CD, there are plenty of other "Oh Shit" buttons disc priests currently have at their disposal. Consider pain supression, coupled with binding heal. Most people would go for penance or flash heal on themselves when in a pince, but why be selfish, when binding heal has the same cast time as flash heal? Those should help both maximise your healing to allies as well as keeping yourself alive. And if you're absolutely at death's door, there's always PW:S + Power Infusion + Inner Focus + Divine Hymn for super speedy, free, massive heals.

Step 1.. Collect underpants
Step 2.. ???
Step 3.. PROFIT!
Adeany Apr 4th 2010 4:28PM
There's some good info here. I'd like to add a few things.
PvPing as Holy is extremely difficult. The spec is much more mana intensive and relies heavily on critical hits for crucial manareg abilities. Regen and critical strike rating are considerably lower on PvP gear than PvE gear, destroying the sustainability of the spec in PvP. Do not attempt unless you have access to a Solace or Abacus.
Capping spellpen and hit rating are extremely important, even if primarily playing defensively, since fear can be resisted.
Martyrdom is generally not taken in a spec because priests who PvP on a serious level expect to have peels from friendly players.
Focused Power is fairly important. Mass Dispel forces you to target an area on the ground, greatly increasing the amount of time it takes to get a cast off. In that time, a paladin can easily heal himself back to 60% or higher.
Maintaining PW:S, PoM, and Renew when not in combat is expensive. Be aware of your surroundings, and you should only need to do this while drinking.
Click off Fear Ward when facing a mage, as good ones will steal it. Fear Ward your shadowfiend if possible.
Vampiric Touch is a joke and it is generally a good idea to dispel it, because it does not silence when dispelled (like UA) and does comparatively little damage compared to allowing it to tick for its full duration.
If falling behind on cleansing diseases against a DK, you can speed up the process by placing Abolish Disease on yourself and spamming Cure Disease.
Breaking Polymorph with SW:D can be done by casting it on any enemy target, not just the mage.
Rogues:
1. Reflective Shield
2. 10% Stun Reduction meta gem
3. Remember to refresh Inner Fire
4. You can juke the interrupt in two ways. 1. Queue up a Penance or Greater Heal and cancel it early. 2. DoT him up, then cast Mind Control.
5. BGs only: Using Mind Vision on a rogue before he enters stealth will allow you to drop him from stealth with an instant-cast spell (usually a DoT).
6. Holy Nova can drop a nearby rogue from stealth.
7. Don't trinket Sap.
Dawn Moore Apr 4th 2010 4:29PM
Haven't seen you in the comments in a while. Good to see you back. Thanks for all the tips! =D
Adeany Apr 4th 2010 4:33PM
PS.
Bladestorm:
1. Don't run; he moves just as fast as you do. Warriors can't interrupt you while spinstorming, so feel free to stand and cast.
2. You should not need Pain Suppression to survive skillstorm unless (1) the warrior started brostorming when you were at 50% or lower, or (2) the warrior started blad3strom with an MS and you were 75% or lower.

Great article! Although when I first started pvp'ing on my priest it was pretty frustrating, now it's one of the most fun things in the game for me.
Few things that weren't mentioned: your shadowfiend is simultaneously your best friend and greatest enemy. He actually does a lot of dps, so it's great to use when you need to go ultra offensive. Also, if you use him when the enemy is under pressure, they are less able to CC him (grrr cyclone). One nice trick against priests and warriors is to summon the fiend, then immediately Fear Ward him, since most (decent) priests and warriors will try to save fear for the fiend.
As far as gearing goes, I highly recommend haste. Penance doesn't scale really well with spellpower, and crit is unreliable. Haste will enhance your healing and dps, but also those peripheral things priests can do: dispelling and mana burning, and will also make all your spells harder to interrupt.
Also, don't give up hope when melee classes keep beating your face in! It gets much much easier once you acquire more resilience gear, and besides, no priest can just escape a melee class on their own, like a frost mage can. No matter your gear, you will always either be relying on teammates to peel 'em off you, or outlasting them while DoTs whittle them down.
gamerunknown Apr 4th 2010 8:22PM
You can get the double 2 pc of spirit and crit PvP gear. Even if you prefer one stat or the other, the slight reduction in weakened soul duration isn't worth the extra 100 resi in my opinion. At 1300 resi I very rarely get stomped on by rogues and love duelling them, since they often get overjoyed at a clothy target only to faceplant. Keep in mind that I'm a low rated 2v2er and occasional dueller/BGer when reading my various musings.
Interrupts and silences are a major concern so preemptively PoMing, renewing and shielding will counteract some of that. Against enemy disc priest you'll most likely be offensively dispelling, offensively fearing and offensively mana burning. I always feel a pang of guilt mana burning an enemy priest though - usually they'd do just the same to me, but its a pain and there's very little you can do to counteract it. Try to get power infusion up and pop your haste trinket before spamming mana burn. If your opponent has used a haste trinket and yours is down, its not always a good idea to try mana burning back, so just kite behind a pillar. Strip enemy priests of fear ward and try using yours as one approaches. Bind a macro where you cancel spell casting to either shadow word: death or fear ward to prevent abrupt fears or polymorphs.
Feared or sapped enemies are perfect candidates for dispelling. Try keeping enemy healers in line of sight if they're Holy Palas or Resto Druids - you don't necessarily need to mana burn, but you really need to get innervate or divine plea down as soon as possible - they'll probably also try to cyclone or stun your shadowfiend to win the mana war. Binding mass dispel to inner focus/stop casting/power infusion has worked out for me as well, as with those buffs its a 0.3 second cast time which can make a huge amount of difference against a pala or mage. Against enemy shaman use a mouseover sw:d macro, get close to them, wait for them to drop tremor and sw:d/fear. Always keep an eye out for mana tide totem.
Using /stopcasting with flash heal or penance in order to waste an enemy kick is something a lot of priests recommend, though I feel that with rogue kicks and DK mind freezes I can usually live with an interrupted flash heal and just use the penance in 5 seconds time knowing that it will have its full affect.
Martyrdom is almost worth it for counterspell alone, but only almost. No holy spells (including shield, penance etc.) for 8 seconds is more than enough time for 2 enemies to kill a priest. If under 80% hp without buffs due to spellsteal a good mage will also be able to kill a priest. In fact, killing a PvP healer is almost always reliant on interrupts (or stuns), healing reductions or mana drains. Its very rare that burst alone will kill a well geared PvP healer.
Mind control can be used liberally as an interrupt, in order to peel dps for you, in order to waste an interrupt for full healing effect, or as CC - for example, in 2v2 I'm confident my partner can lock down a PvE geared dps, so I will fear the healer, mind control, then whether or not they've blown their trinket, my partner will usually blind them. Then I assist with dps on my partner's target. Just be mindful that if they're DoTed and mind controlled, PoM can heal them, HoTs will still affect them and mind control can be broken by damaging or interrupting the priest or dispelling the effect. It wont be very effective if there's a free dps nearby or you're attempting to MC one of 2 dps on you, whether or not they have interrupts. It also has a very short range, so if you plan on fear -> DoT -> MC, you may have to chase down your target. Another random tip: if you're up against a mage with nibelung, you can shackle undead the Valkyrie that pops out.
Also, I made my disc spec at some point in 3.2 where not as many priests went for silent resolve and most went for crit gear, though there's been a major swing where top tier arena priests are using it and switching to haste gear. Perhaps its due to a preponderance of range cleave with spellsteal/counterspell or purge/wind shear?
Finally: skilled dps of any class will be a problem for a priest (Well, at my awful skill level at any rate). I mentioned I enjoy duelling rogues, but there's a rogue on my server who is in the top 2v2 team that I've never beaten. Likewise, I'm fairly confident against ret paladins, shaman and warriors, but I've been beaten by PvP geared fury warriors, arms warriors, enh shaman and ret paladins. I've been unable to nuke down a resto druid who stayed in bear who then cycloned my shadowfiend when I was oom and proceeded to bash my hymn of hope. That said, I haven't lost to a boomkin since level 80. Class imbalance can somewhat be overcome by skill and gear. But the 3 classes I tend to hate in a 1v1 scenario are affliction locks, arms warriors and shadow priests. Its almost impossible to dispel a shadow priests fear ward due to stacks of shadow weaving (so can rarely peel against them) they do too much damage within range to mana burn and can interrupt or dispel any of my offensive or defensive spells, not to mention having more interrupts and more mana cooldowns. On top of that, in shadow priest/dps vs. healer/dps if the healer gets killed and the dps on the shadow priest is out of cooldowns and low on health, the shadowpriest can break shadow form and heal with an efficiency topping any hybrid bar, perhaps, boomkin.
Afflic locks the problem is somewhat simpler: in a 1v1 scenario, I can't outdps health funnel or life drain, nor outlast mana drains when coupled with their dps. They'll also have me ping ponging all over the place with their various fears and their fel hunter will eat my shield, power infusion and various buffs. Sometimes I manage to kill their pet behind a pillar only for them to pop fel domination and summon it again. Oh, not to mention I could be behind a pillar 50% of a fight and not be able to drink due to a pet being on me. Though that's a problem with unholy DKs and hunters as well.
Warriors have berserker rage (1 peel down), furious attacks or mortal strike and can interrupt mind control, as well as keeping me highly immobile most of the game with the undispellable hamstring. Some arms warriors with low dps I can DoT, fear, mind control when they berserker rage. With good gear (high ArP usually) I'm forced to use defensive cooldowns the whole battle and by the time bladestorm's popped I'm as good as finished. Fury warriors with furious attacks take a little longer to down me, but eventually do as enraged regeneration and bloodthirst outheal my DoTs and reflective shield.

Wow, that was almost as long as the article itself. Lots of good stuff there.
Out of curiosity I copied a disco priest to the PTR a while back, and became so thoroughly hooked that I decided to level one. This article ( and the comments :) ) will help me a lot as I really enjoy battleground leveling.
