World of WarCrafts: Player-composers create sounds of Azeroth
World of WarCrafts spotlights art and creativity by WoW players, including fan art, cooking, comics, cosplay, music and fan fiction. Show us how you express yourself by e-mailing lisa (at) wow (dot) com with your not-for-profit, WoW-inspired creations.
The atmospheric listening music for this week's World of WarCrafts comes to us from Rehmaar of <Knights of Valiant Fury> on US Destromath-H. This original, orchestral-style composition, "Knights of the Valiant Fury Overture," is dedicated to the composer's guild. "We are a radical bunch on the Horde side of Destromath, but we have an awesome time playing together and this is my gift to them," writes Rehmaar. "The piece captures what it means to be a member of our guild and depicts the struggles and glory our characters face in Azeroth." How's that for some faction and guild pride?
Join us after the break for two entirely -- and we do mean entirely -- different musical takes on Azeroth.
Lion's Pride Dance Mix
Next up this week is the latest from our friend Vedrim, who brought us the popular "Bound By Bone" Marrowgar remix. It may take you a moment to recognize where this dance mix is headed -- but hang in there 'til 0:56, and we think you'll catch a theme that will make you feel both festive and well rested.
Catch our interview with Vedrim in this previous World of WarCrafts.
ThunderBrew Brewing Co. presents ... That Guy
What happens when you combine some rollicking general forum threads with a bored musician, silly lite beer commercial parodies and relentless mockery of WoW player stereotypes? You get a whole page of tongue-in-cheek musical caricatures of the WoW types you love to hate. From Mr. Suddenly-Has-to-Go-Right-After-a-Wipe Guy to Mr. Telling-the-Guild-He's-a-Girl Guy, you'll probably recognize a guildie or two in this batch of parodies.
"It all really started a few years ago in Blizzard's general forums," says creator Quintin of <Quintessential> (US Dragonblight-A). "There were several threads filled with posts of creative lyrics in the style of the popular lite beer radio commercials. I happened to have a modest recording studio at my home in Georgia, and I knew several musicians in the area, but there was never a good time to bring it all together. So I turned to the magic of Google. I found a great music bed, deep in the cached archives of Google, that was exactly what I needed. It was a drum and keyboard instrumental music bed, apparently created by three like-minded guys wanting to have some silly fun making parody beer commercials."
"Meanwhile, a guildie, Amonrah, had been working with the lyrics," he continues. "I think he wrote a few of the parodies that we did from scratch, but the majority were inspired by, if not direct copies of, what was posted in the general forums. There were many edits, but most were simply for timing, phrasing or cadence. Amonrah and I recorded all the vocal parts. He did the announcer parts, and I did the singing parts. I've never claimed to be a singer. I'm much more comfortable being a recording engineer. So I just threw a lot of effects and reverb on my vocals and let it fly."
We think it flies pretty high. This ThunderBrew's for you!

Where is the music that isn't done by computer and isn't FUCKING TECHNO.
Miakasu Apr 5th 2010 3:17PM
I'd like to see you do better.
Excellent songs. The first one sounds a lot like its already in game.
Tokkar Apr 5th 2010 3:42PM
1) Some of us happen to LIKE techno.
...and...
2) You do like your profanity, don't you? It's in most of your prior posts. Seriously, is profanity necessary? Does it make you feel somehow more important?

Dude, most music these days is made digitally. Jeremy Soule (Morrowind, Oblivion, Neverwinter Nights) creates all of his music digitally. Surprise, it isn't techno, it's all orchestral.
I would bet that all of the music made for WoW patches (but not expansion launches) are also made digitally. It would be lunacy to reasonably expect Blizzard to compose the music, get an orchestra together, and record the music every two-four months for a content patch. Much faster to take an orchestra library and compose the music digitally; No need for the players to practice and get them together to play five or six songs, no having to do multiple recordings, and no yada yada yada.

But if you REALLY wanted non-electronic music outside the techno genre, you could always look back a whole two weeks' worth:

No, you didn't.
"Also I do enjoy my cussing you don't like I could care less I can use such words if I want I don't mind it I don't see why anyone else does almost every movie has cussing or hints at it."
Section 8 of the Terms of Service would disagree with you.

Well done creative folks! :-)
Ethan Apr 5th 2010 8:19PM
It's the Alli inn theme. It's a good thing he included the Lion's Pride part in there (the name of the inn in Goldshire) or I never would have guessed it.
Matthew Apr 5th 2010 11:12PM
Thanks!
I dare you to do something with the tauren inn. Hehe

How do people make this sort of music digitally? :O What programs to they use?
Ruthar Apr 6th 2010 8:56PM
Well, there are plenty of programs that could do it. I specifically used sounds produced from the music notation software known as Sibelius.
