Cataclysm Class Changes: Elemental Shaman Analysis

Spiritwalker's Grace (level 85): When this self-targeted buff is active, your spells are no longer interrupted by movement and possibly even by your own attacks. This will give shaman of all three specs another way to heal or do damage when it's necessary to move in both PvE and PvP. Instant cast. 10-second duration. 2-minute cooldown.
So you're saying that I could make it so Lava Burst, Chain Lightning or Lightning Bolt don't stop casting when I move? This could be absolutely huge for casting spells in high avoidable-damage situations. Imagine Defile is about to cast and you know it. You hit Spiritwalker's Grace and you can run away without losing that Lava Burst you're casting. Sure, it'll be huge for healing shaman too, but frankly this ability will solve one of my biggest problems with elemental as a playstyle: all the damage you lose jumping out of things. The longer cooldown means this'll be a situational ability as opposed to making you an unstoppable chain-casting machine, but the 10-second duration means you'll have plenty of time to get a few casts off before it ends.
There's more, though. Much more.
Nethaera - Cataclysm Class Preview: ShamanTotem of Wrath now will replace Flametongue Totem for all shaman, and dropping this totem will buff the group's spell power by 4%. Elemental shaman will have a talent that lets all Fire totems provide +10% spell power, allowing them to drop Searing, Magma, or Fire Elemental Totems without losing their spell-damage buff. The 4% and 10% buffs will be exclusive with each other and with the warlock's Demonic Pact, so you can't benefit from all of them at once. We're also considering letting Elemental drop Searing Totem at range.
This is arguably the biggest change for elemental shaman in this announcement, and one we've been asking for for a very long time. We're currently restricted in which fire totem to drop -- the one that provides the group buff (Totem of Wrath) or others that directly help our DPS (like Magma Totem). This change removes that problem completely by allowing any fire totem to provide ToW's spellpower buff. It also solves the problem of demonology warlocks providing a superior buff without having to make a DPS-or-buff decision by making the fully-talented totem a 10% spellpower boost instead of a flat increase. We asked, Blizzard answered.
But what about the crit bonus that Totem of Wrath currently provides? I don't see it mentioned here. Ominous!
Nethaera - Cataclysm Class Preview: ShamanUnleash Weapon (level 81): Unleashes the power of your weapon enchants for additional effects (see below). A dual-wielding Enhancement shaman will activate the effects of both of their weapon enchants. Instant cast. 30-yard range. 15-second cooldown. Undispellable.
Here are a few examples of effects we're considering for this ability:
Here are a few examples of effects we're considering for this ability:
- Windfury Weapon – Hurls a spectral version of your weapon at a target, dealing 50% weapon damage and increasing the shaman's Haste for the next five swings.
- Flametongue Weapon – Deals instant Fire damage and buffs the shaman's next Fire attack by 20%.
- Earthliving Weapon – Heals the target slightly and buffs the shaman's next healing spell by 20%.
This basically amounts to a shaman Judgement, but I care not -- these sound great for all three specs. The elemental one in particular has both a direct-damage component and a huge boost for our next Lava Burst. With the ability on 15-second cooldown, you could feasibly boost every other Lava Burst you cast by 20%, effectively increasing your total Lava Burst damage by ~10%. Not an insignificant amount. Obviously there's theorycrafting to be done as to whether using the GCD -- if there is one -- for Unleash Weapon is worth not casting a Lightning Bolt, but that's for another time. For now, I'll bask in this awesome buff.
Nethaera - Cataclysm Class Preview: ShamanA small but welcome change.
Nethaera - Cataclysm Class Preview: ShamanWe plan to add Earthquake as a deep Elemental talent for targeted and persistent AoE.
Another fantastic addition. Elemental shaman suffer from lackluster AoE capability: our most powerful AoE spell (Magma Totem) is incredibly expensive and requires us to be right next to the mobs we want the totem to damage. For a ranged class, that's rather silly. Earthquake should let us become competent DPS in group situations.
Nethaera - Cataclysm Class Preview: ShamanMastery Passive Talent Tree Bonuses: Elemental

Spell Crit
Elemental Overload: Your direct-damage spells have a chance to proc a less powerful 'bonus" version of the spell. This will work much like the current Lightning Overload talent, but would also apply to Lava Burst.

Of all of our current elemental talents, Lightning Overload always felt the most ... elemental, I suppose. It was the perfect passive talent -- cool as hell when you got it and useful as a DPS boost 100% of the time. It only makes sense that this would be the talent that got converted into a mastery bonus. The fact that it now works with Lava Burst, especially combined with the Unleash Weapon: Flametongue ability Blizzard announced, is a welcome and wonderful change. What does remain to be seen is how the proc rate will work -- right now Lightning Overload has a very high proc rate, and it's a not-insignificant chunk of our DPS. Changing LO to a Mastery bonus could mess with this paradigm, though I'm sure Blizzard has thought of this already.
I am a little concerned about the second-tier bonus, though -- crit has always been kind of a second-banana stat for us, due to Lava Burst being a guaranteed crit, and so far there haven't been any changes announced that'd make it more useful. Haste seems like it'd be the obvious choice for a mastery stat to me. We'll have to wait and see what else is up Blizzard's sleeve.
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will destroy Azeroth as we know it. Nothing will be the same. In WoW.com's Guide to Cataclysm you can find out everything you need to know about WoW's third expansion. From Goblins and Worgens to Mastery and Guild changes, it's all there for your cataclysmic enjoyment.

Spiritwalker's Grace is going to be amazing for Ele PvP. Think about what it would do for Arena, Ele has such a terrible time dealing with LOS.
Now you can pop this baby and decimate that cockroach of a resto druid as you follow it around the pillar laughing at this vain attempts to shake you off...mwahahaha

Earthquake intrigues me. Caster with a ranged physical AOE maybe?
I would hope that Lava Burst gets changed to a boost of damage and maybe 25-50% crit chance instead of just a guaranteed crit. It's one thing to aim for caps (def, ArP, hit+exp) but crit isn't something you should be worrying about. Heck, def and ArP are gone already so anything that caps out (sans hit) probably won't be around much longer.

Yea... well BM hunters got it covered, yo.

Think of it this way Rossi, if haste were a mastery bonus we'd probably have to see an increase in the cast times of LB, LvB and CL as they already all have short cast times. Haste as a mastery bonus would just exacerbate the problem and bring us faster to the point that many ele shams are at right now, where we're spreading our haste buffs out so as not to overlap them (depending on haste levels). I know Crit isn't a strong stat for ele shams, but better to get that so we can focus on haste, mastery, and spell power.

Of course we're all basing this info as if it was implemented tomorrow w/ no tweaking of the cast times, or anything else. Speculation is fun though :)

What I don't understand is people who feel the need to talk down about something, rather then just not say anything at all. If you don't like it, that's fine. You're allowed to formulate your own opinion. But seriously, you took the time to not only read this article, but then got pissed because it didn't sing the praises of PvP along with it.
This information JUST came out today, give them time to speculate about PvP viability with the new information.

At first glance I thought the same thing about Spell Crit being a passive bonus for elemental, but then I remembered something from the Warlock post about Haste and Crit being changed to innately affect dots. I would still rather see haste up there in its place, but crit may not be as useless come the expansion as it is now.

I'm in tears. TEARS!
They are sweet sweet tears of joy. After the ups and downs for Elemental in this expansion pack I was ready for them to stay they were getting rid of the spec lol. These are -happy- changes :D

I really like the changes, but I was hoping for more of an overhaul with totems. It seems that with spells like Fire Nova, Blizzard is trying to make totems more interactive, and less place-them-down-and-forget-about-it. Obviously many people didn't like Fire Nova because you have to position your totems at your target (as well as making it useless when the target moved significantly) but I thought that it was a really cool concept of having the spells interact directly with the totems themselves. I guess I just figured that this would leave room for a major totem change in Cataclysm, like soul shard for warlocks — many considered shards a burden before, instead of a blessing, which I think is the same feeling with totems for some shammies. Anyone else wonder if, among the really cool spell/talent changes and the helpful fire totem change, they might try to revamp totems a bit?

The changes to ToW almost made me weep a little. It's a change we've been asking for for a year+ -- the ability to buff the raid and live up to our potential DPS.
That and EARTHQUAAAAAAKKKEEE!!!! make me one happy damn shaman.
Cata can't come too soon for me.
All of the shaman changes said one thing to me: That Blizz HAS been listening to our feedback and wants shaman to be awesome.

I see Earthquake as a spell that functions sort of like a lovechild of Mind Sear and Living Bomb.
Earthquake: Turns an enemy target into the epicenter of an earthquake damaging all enemies within x yards for y damage over z seconds.
IMO give it a cooldown which is 4 times the z seconds. So if its a 15 second spell make it a minute cooldown. 30 second spell make it a 2 minute cooldown.
Since the target is the "epicenter" it takes no damage but damages all targets around it.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the idea of getting hit off of the spirt that will be on our gear? Sounds a little lack luster to me, because after hit cap it will become a wasted stat. It seems like Bliz wants us to sharing gear with or resto brothers so i would guess we will be seeing a fare amount of it on our gear.
GrumblyStuff Apr 7th 2010 11:30PM
Some gear will have spirit, some won't.
And remember, you can reforge armor to adjust stats....

Dropping Searing from range sounds pretty cool, and later in the thread they clarified that if there was the option to drop Searing from range, they probably could go ahead and make a spell that "causes the next totem cast to appear at the feet of the target." Which would be pretty awesome for a magma+nova+earthquake combo for elemental.
They did mention that at they also wanted to make sure searing had better single target dps than magma, which is only fitting.

I wonder about the range of the new ToW buff. If we can drop searing at the boss' feet, will everyone be in range? With the recent buff to the range of certain buffs they seemed reluctant to change the range of totems.
TarLord Apr 8th 2010 4:04PM
I'd trade all those changes for two new cooldown talents making dungeon gameplay more tactical and interesting. Enh and even Resto pwn Elemental when it comes to pure depth of the class and it seems it will stay this way in Cata.
