Frankly, I always thought of the Combat tree as being based (loosely) on the D&D Swashbuckler class. They're a form of rogue, but they like being in the limelight. Tricky little bastards, too...Erm, I should say, the "Old" swashbuckler. They remade them as a strange Warrior hybrid in the 3.5 rules, instead of 2.0's Rogue Kit version....Yeah, I really need to work on my Combat build... I miss being a Swashbuckler... But, I think the Assassin rogue is a lot closer to being a "ninja". They're a big fan of poisons, after all, which was a big weapon for the traditional ninja (especially the kunoichi). As Rainingbow said, Subtlety is a spy, through and through. They're the best sneakers, and get the most utility tricks. Kinda makes me feel like Michael Weston when I play a Sub build.
