Here's an "out there" idea. The author's complaint about Pallies hogging the Light and there not being many prominent NPC priest made me think of Velen, of course. But that led me on to another idea. What if it turned out that the magical power of Priests actually comes from the Naaru, not from the vague Light or Elune or voodoo gods or whatever. Back in Vanilla, priests were the vessels through which the Naaru worked their plan in Azeroth before they wanted to make their presence directly known (so they sort of posed as "the light" or Elune or the voodoo gods. I'm not saying that the Naaru are those thing, just that they let the priests believe that the power came from a culturally relevant source.)A Naaru source of power explains the Priest powers pretty well. Healing is obvious. But the mind based stuff fits in well with the Naaru as beings of energy and thought. Also, the shadow tree makes sense in a Naaru framework because we know Naaru go through dark phases in their lifecycle.Anyway, it would be a fun twist.

I would only like this idea for my Draenei priest, though, not for my Blood Elf, or my Undead (I loves me some priests). I like the idea that different races would have different faiths and would draw on the power of whatever their fate is. So basically, not every priest is praying to the same entity. Now, saying that, I do think it would be cool if you could pick what "religion" your priest believed in, no matter what race you play. For instance, I love thinking my Blood Elf ran away to the Undercity as an emo youth to study Shadow Magic amongst all the undead. I also like thinking my Undead priest was a Blood Elf in life, and spends her time in Silvermoon because it's a comfort to be back in her home city. It'd be cool if each "religion" had its own little flair. Maybe the spells could be the same, but have different animations. Trolls could have more voodoo flavored spell effects, Blood Elves could have sun or Phoenix-esque stuff... That sort of thing. I know it'd be a lot of extra work for the designers but I don't care! ;) Even if it was just one "flair" spell per race or religion, I'd be satisfied. Sort of like the new racial totems, but with a single spell or something. You could even give the same spell different names, like how Horde has Bloodlust and Alliance has Heroism.

Oh, I understand completely that non-draenei priests might not LIKE being unwitting servants of the Naaru. But good drama isn't about always giving the reader/player what they like (see: Garrosh).
