I think the biggest problem is that priest inherently are about religion. Yet, they vary in religion and as such should vary in method. All mages and warlocks and even paladins get their power from the same place. Yet, Azeroth was correctly given multiple religions and priests correctly fill the same role for them all. This leads to the flavor being neutralized when game mechanics get in the way. It's like when classes talk about other classes getting their ability. From a purely mechanics and number crunching view, warlocks and mages are getting closer to each other especially in the use of fire. Yet, the flavor is wildly different. Mages claim to call fire from the elemental plane through the arcane arts and locks call from the demonic planes for their fel fire. The flavor is kept through class differences even if the effect is the same.Still, priest follow various beliefs. Yet, this undead can call upon the Shadow in the exact same manner as this night elf calls upon Elune and receives the same animation and effect???? Just like it makes sense for shaman totems to vary between races, something needs to appear different for various priests or make it not have the religious flavor at all.
