The Light and How to Swing It: Cataclysm class preview wishlist

Well, here's the problem. I was going to do this whole long article on my predictions and wish-list for the paladin Cataclysm class previews that were coming out Friday. The problem is that they've moved them up to Wednesday which is the same day this column normally goes live. So, I can either write a nice long column with predictions that will end up going live after the real information comes out or we can do a short and sweet prediction article a day early with more time spent on analysis for tomorrow.
I'm going with short and sweet version.
All I want for Cataclysm:
- Baseline Crusader Strike - I want this bad and preferably at level one. It could actually just be an ability like it, but a little less polished. This would help out with the absolute boredom that is the low level paladin (being as we only have one real attack ability for way too long). If done right, this would also give protection a different button to press when needing to concentrate on single target only in those situations where AoE can be a bad thing.
- Greater Holy Light - Okay, I don't really want a new spell called Greater Holy Light. What I do want is a new spell called Holy Light that's a mid-range heal and for the current Holy Light to be renamed to Greater Holy Light. While I'm not usually a healer, I do recognize how limited our healing kit is. A middle of the road heal would greatly help out the variety of spells we can choose from. Also, the mid-range heal would probably have a lower cast time which is never a bad thing.
- Sanctified Strike - It doesn't really need to be called that, but another melee attack that leveling holy, prot, and retribution could all use would be handy. It could add a nice debuff to our opponent or just be a flat damage ability, but a little more variety in melee attacks in a melee class would be nice.
- Cast/Run Ability - Shammies are getting an ability that allows them to cast while moving for Cataclysm. Being as holy despises movement, I figured it might be a helpful choice.
- More procs - The Art of War ended up being a nice talent for retribution by allowing an instant Flash of Light or Exorcism when it procced. Also, the 2-piece bonus from the tier 10 retribution set added some variety into the monotony. Having some procs to watch for allows for a more skilled player to start pulling away from face-rolling n00bz. We don't really have enough of those for either ret or protection as it stands and a few more could add some depth to both specs. I'm actually not all that worried about this one popping up, because they've said the want all talent trees to move that way for Cataclysm.
- AoE heal - I want an unglyphed AoE heal. We're the only healing class not to have one and I don't count Beacon of Light (although it is handy in its own right). No more comments necessary.
- Less static rotation for prot - Okay, I'm all for ease of use. Being able to mindlessly hit abilities while watching a bunch of other things going on during a fight can be really handy. However, something to shake things up would be nice. It could be proc based or just another ability to break up the rotation a bit.
- Fixing prot's mana starvation - This is really more of a dungeon issue than it is a raid issue for protection. Currently, if you're over-gearing the content by a fair amount and the pulls are a little over 15 seconds apart, then your mana bar will quickly deplete. A lot of this has to do with the current content being so AoE based and having to constantly drop Consecration to keep threat on everything. However, it's fairly easy in some dungeons (*cough*Violet Hold*cough*) to have things timed where you can't quite keep Divine Plea up and running. Being as we're a mana based class, if we're out of mana, we're screwed. Things tend to die before Blessing of Sanctuary becomes useful. While Spiritual Attunement does help with this a little bit, you do run into the issue of not taking enough damage to be able to get healed in order to regenerate some mana. I'm not sure if the answer is changing talents around so that we gain mana from hitting things or giving us a boost to Judgement of Wisdom's returns for when we do hit things, but if they're fixing warrior and druid resource starvation, they can fix ours as well.

Honestly?
I don't even care what they do to the class mechanics, as long as T2 is still available so I can get it on my brand spanking new Tauren Paladin.
*stares wistfully at the ever beautiful splash image*
Gregg Reece Apr 13th 2010 5:34PM
Yeah, I don't think I can over-use that image. It's a cool set to begin with and having a big ole Tauren running around in it will be fun.
Lidodger Apr 13th 2010 5:56PM
You know you could always Level a Paladin get the T2 then Race Change into the Tauren.
Kanuris Apr 13th 2010 8:41PM
Already got my T2 and Hand of Rag on my Blood Elf Pally. Race Changing to Female Tauren as soon as possible.
And i'm going to assume the Ret side of Paladins is going to radically change. There's not a huge difference between skilled Ret's and facerollers, and we've far too many weaknesses in a pvp enviornment compared to our strengths.
Wesley Anthony Apr 13th 2010 5:34PM
I'm really thinking about changing my race from bloodelf to tauren after caty hits so i can have an 80 tauren pally!

AoE Heal is the only thing we really need.
BadAndyMk3 Apr 13th 2010 5:34PM
A gap-closer plus an AoE stun.
.....Ha! In all honesty you'll probably get all kinds of fun new stuff. Everything you asked for and more.

For which spec though? Giving it to any tree would make the other two raise a stink about it but I guess there's always glyphs (WTB center glyph spot at 85)
Glyph of Hand of Freedom: Increases run speed by 50%. Stacks additively with Pursuit of Justice.
Cooldown would have to go up and/or the duration would have to be lowered though.
AOE stun? Hmm... should just have some baseline cooldown that modifies various abilities.
Blinding Light: The Light channels through your body. If you use Holy Shield, attackers will become blinded for four seconds. Damage can break the effect. If you use Hammer of the Righteous, up to five enemies within eight yards of your target will be stunned...
...and so on and so forth. If shadowform can have a 70 word tooltip, well, guess we'll need those scrolling tooltips for Cataclysm that someone joked about.

Repeated from another post of mine:
"Glyph of Divine Storm Mark 2: Your Divine Storm now effects only one target but for double damage". Thus raiding paladins could choose competitive single target dps over insane trash dps. This would help end the OP QQ from other classes while rescuing our languishing raid dps.
Daethar Apr 14th 2010 2:31PM
And then you really could one-shot all clothies!
1) Find mage, priest, or warlock alone
2) Fly down and land on them
3) Press your shiny new glyphed Divine Storm Golden Gun Mark II
4) ????
5) Profit!!

I want a less facerolly retribution spec. I want a sustained dps rotation that has layers and builds off of hitting the right key, not nearly the right key or geez, any key. I want to be able to target switch without seeing my dps plummet.
I'll give up sacred shield and hell, most of my hand spells, to get rid of forbearance and more offensive abilities. Oh and a real interrupt would be nice.
Gregg Reece Apr 13th 2010 7:32PM
We have a real interrupt. Even if Hammer of Justice doesn't stun, it will still interrupt.
Fletcher Apr 14th 2010 4:05AM
Yeah, but *once a minute*. Rogues can do it once every ten seconds, and I think for Shammies it's eight. Part of this is class design; I get it that we're plate wearers, we're supposed to eat damage rather than avoid it. But part of it is a woeful lack of utility.
TERU Apr 14th 2010 9:37AM
Our "Wind shock" is 6 second CD, and with a 25 yard range.
iceveiled Apr 13th 2010 5:45PM
I mainly use my Pally to heal (levelled as ret, but am now holy).
I would love to see an instant cast HoT and/or an unglyphed AoE heal. Preferably a HoT. That alone would satisfy me.
erknost Apr 13th 2010 6:58PM
Can any of you imagine a deep Holy talent tree ability that and a HoT factor in our normal Consecration? It will use a lot more mana but what cool would be have able to create a holy ground of healing over time around us? But the Radiance Aura look cool too...
jfofla Apr 13th 2010 5:45PM
Oh Lord, Want you buy me,
A cast on the run.
My friends all can to it,
it seems kind of fun.
Healed hard thru the fight
Except when I'm Gooed
So Oh Lord, Want you buy me
A cast on the run
Aaron Apr 14th 2010 8:42AM
I want to up vote you more, but I can't. Your post should be glowing. GIEF ME (AT LEAST) ONE MOVING HEALS PLXZ!!!!!
I love being a healadin, but I love moving out of goo/fire/toxic 'splosions too.
Cr0wley Apr 14th 2010 9:06AM
Holy Shock? Or do most Holy spec's just ignore that one in favour of FoL?
Mellisande Apr 13th 2010 5:45PM
I'd love to see Pally's given some sort of HoT (besides the SS/FoL HoT). That and a group heal of some sort would be wonderful, especially for 10-mans!
