The Light and How to Swing It: Cataclysm class preview wishlist

Well, here's the problem. I was going to do this whole long article on my predictions and wish-list for the paladin Cataclysm class previews that were coming out Friday. The problem is that they've moved them up to Wednesday which is the same day this column normally goes live. So, I can either write a nice long column with predictions that will end up going live after the real information comes out or we can do a short and sweet prediction article a day early with more time spent on analysis for tomorrow.
I'm going with short and sweet version.
All I want for Cataclysm:
- Baseline Crusader Strike - I want this bad and preferably at level one. It could actually just be an ability like it, but a little less polished. This would help out with the absolute boredom that is the low level paladin (being as we only have one real attack ability for way too long). If done right, this would also give protection a different button to press when needing to concentrate on single target only in those situations where AoE can be a bad thing.
- Greater Holy Light - Okay, I don't really want a new spell called Greater Holy Light. What I do want is a new spell called Holy Light that's a mid-range heal and for the current Holy Light to be renamed to Greater Holy Light. While I'm not usually a healer, I do recognize how limited our healing kit is. A middle of the road heal would greatly help out the variety of spells we can choose from. Also, the mid-range heal would probably have a lower cast time which is never a bad thing.
- Sanctified Strike - It doesn't really need to be called that, but another melee attack that leveling holy, prot, and retribution could all use would be handy. It could add a nice debuff to our opponent or just be a flat damage ability, but a little more variety in melee attacks in a melee class would be nice.
- Cast/Run Ability - Shammies are getting an ability that allows them to cast while moving for Cataclysm. Being as holy despises movement, I figured it might be a helpful choice.
- More procs - The Art of War ended up being a nice talent for retribution by allowing an instant Flash of Light or Exorcism when it procced. Also, the 2-piece bonus from the tier 10 retribution set added some variety into the monotony. Having some procs to watch for allows for a more skilled player to start pulling away from face-rolling n00bz. We don't really have enough of those for either ret or protection as it stands and a few more could add some depth to both specs. I'm actually not all that worried about this one popping up, because they've said the want all talent trees to move that way for Cataclysm.
- AoE heal - I want an unglyphed AoE heal. We're the only healing class not to have one and I don't count Beacon of Light (although it is handy in its own right). No more comments necessary.
- Less static rotation for prot - Okay, I'm all for ease of use. Being able to mindlessly hit abilities while watching a bunch of other things going on during a fight can be really handy. However, something to shake things up would be nice. It could be proc based or just another ability to break up the rotation a bit.
- Fixing prot's mana starvation - This is really more of a dungeon issue than it is a raid issue for protection. Currently, if you're over-gearing the content by a fair amount and the pulls are a little over 15 seconds apart, then your mana bar will quickly deplete. A lot of this has to do with the current content being so AoE based and having to constantly drop Consecration to keep threat on everything. However, it's fairly easy in some dungeons (*cough*Violet Hold*cough*) to have things timed where you can't quite keep Divine Plea up and running. Being as we're a mana based class, if we're out of mana, we're screwed. Things tend to die before Blessing of Sanctuary becomes useful. While Spiritual Attunement does help with this a little bit, you do run into the issue of not taking enough damage to be able to get healed in order to regenerate some mana. I'm not sure if the answer is changing talents around so that we gain mana from hitting things or giving us a boost to Judgement of Wisdom's returns for when we do hit things, but if they're fixing warrior and druid resource starvation, they can fix ours as well.

Actually come the changes, all tanks and dps plate wearers will have the same gear. The only ones left alone, the healers in plate.
So make it an even playing field for all and instead of a boss dropping healing boots, dps pants, and tanking shoulders, they drop plate... period.. and all can use it.
But if they do not do that, what we will see is a boss dropping plate healing boots, and tank/dps shoulders and pants. Then the tanks and the dps fight over that while eventually all the healing plate gets sharded.
I think they should do the same thing for shammies and mail, and caster druids with leather.
If they are going to simplify it, then simplify it.

They have specifically said that tanks and dps will NOT be wearing the same gear because there will be tank gear with avoidance stats on it. While I suspect that DPS gear will be more viable as a a threat option with the increased stam and lack of need for defense rating, tanks will still have gear designed specifically for them.

@Adrian
Not to mention high Stam, blue sockets, etc. There WILL still be "tank gear" in Cata.

WTB interrupt and gap closer. The lack of these is annoying in PvE and absolutely frustrating in PvP.
The other thing I want is a more interesting way to play retribution in raids. Using nearly the exact same ability priority for AoE and single target is bad and leads to everyone thinking we're OP. Presumably DS will be nerfed for single target damage (since WW was) and we will be getting something new to replace it, maybe some kind of strike that debuffs the target but shares a CD with DS?
Whatever happens, I would love to have more differentiation between good and bad paladins.

Who cares about mana regen in couple of heroics that you vastly outgear. Either stick on some ret gear for more dps, or carry a stack of water with you and drink it for 5 seconds before the pull. Mana pots are only a couple of gold if you really want to pull through things quickly.

Any bets on a combat resurrection being introduced? They got rid of the shaman's exclusivity with bloodlust, so why not get rid of a druid's exclusive combat rez? It'd fit with the lore a heck of a lot more than a druid's would, just going off the WCIII level 6 paladin ability.
I realize that was a mass resurrection, but it was usable in combat! Of course, if they just wanted to port that from WCIII as is, I'd take it. Oh no, half the raid dead? Not anymore!

IIRC one of the new "guild talents" is going to be a mass res, so they probably wouldn't give it to paladins (maybe, but I don't imagine they'd duplicate it?)
Would be nice though.

greater holy light? where would a mid range heal fit in, exactly, between my 1sec FoL and my 1.2sec HL? and how much would it heal for between an 8k FoL and 40k HL? midrange healing is not what pallies need. instant-hot or an aoe heal, that's what we need.

I leveled a Pally to 74 and it just got to be so boring, especially as a Tank. I decided to quit and start a warrior instead. Once I got Warbringer I never looked back, I love it.
However with some changes like these mentioned I might actually try and hit 80. A race change to a Tauren, which would be my first real Horde alt, might be in order too. Good stuff, lets hope the preview is decent.

I would like a controlled, reliable interrupt. No, Hammer of Justice does not count, since it works on nothing other than non-elite, non-raid mobs. I tried to stun a boss in Uldaman - ULDAMAN - last night and it laughed at me.
Give us something like uh, "Pommel strike." Bop the baddie in the mouth to keep them quiet. That would work.
Kanuris Apr 13th 2010 8:42PM
Hammer of Justice WILL Interupt targets immune to stuns.
But yeah, a short cooldown interupt wouldn't hurt. Would massively help in pvp when dealing with healers.

I vote for Mass Ressurrection.
Terenas Menethil would like to resurrect the whole of your raid! And Also teach your shiny Paladins how to get that shit down!
ACCEPT

sanctified ground ( first thing to come to mind)
shares cooldown with concecrate probably animation too but provides a hot to those standing on the holy ground probably instant but is applied to area using a reticle like most aoe's
this is the only way i can see paladins getting an aoe heal that is within their flavour but it would be totally awesome ^^

I found myself nodding my head to every point you made, good wishlist. I do have some things to comment on.
Holy Soloing: I hope holy gets more help with soloing. I'd love to be able to level as holy in the expansion through dungeons and questing, while also hitting the level cap and not feeling forced to respec to ret or prot to do dailies and what not.
Prot's Mana: Yes, I agree. If Blizzard doesn't... at LEAST make Divine Plea learned much much earlier.
Class Complexity as a Whole: Improve it! I don't like Retribution's "First-come first-served," there needs to be some more involvement between their abilities. I'm not too knowledgeable about Prot. I'm dieing for Holy to get actual AoE heals and maybe a HoT, not effects tied in with glyphs or awkward spell situations.
prenden2 Apr 13th 2010 10:21PM
As a Holy paladin, I could see our much-predicted aoe heal coming in the form of Beacon being given a Glyph of Holy Light effect, which is to say that whenever a heal is targeted on the beacon specifically, a percentage of the heal would be transferred to x players within n yards.
Or, to go one step further, FoL could act solely on Beaconed targets, splitting the healing between between her and nearby party/raid members with the new medium-heal (should we get one) becoming our go-to ability for tank-spamming. Or vice-versa.
This would probably keep us reasonably well inside our single-target niche while still giving us flexibility to raid heal effectively.
Camreth Apr 14th 2010 12:06AM
New talent (or a addition to a existing one) at the bottom of the prot tree: While Righteous fury is active Divine Plea lasts until canceled, but the healing reduction is reduced to 100%.
That way we would not have to worry about it dropping off and holy would not want to get it (i'm not shure if holy still go prot for pvp but if they do this would make them avoid the talent).
