I dunno why the author doesn't like the idea of transmuting & cutting epic gems, but since they added epic transmutes I leveled 2 more alchies (to give me 3), all xmute spec.Every day since, I log in to my JC, burn my Icy Prism CD, send off the gems (and eternals) to my Alchies for epic-ification and then back to the JC to be cut & sold into the most profitable cuts. Now on my server the value of those mats is a joke. Maybe 5g for the frozen orb, 15g for the 3 green quality gems, 20g for the eternal and 60-100g for the gems produced by the icy prism. Now up until the last patch, high demand epic cuts were selling for 175-250g each on my server. Factor in the transmute procs (I've averaged about 4.5 gems out of 3 xmutes per day) and materials worth 140-150g were netting me 800-1000g PER DAY! and doing so took all of 5 minutes on 4 toons. I had my own mats farmed up but you could easily do this never leaving the AH.Unfortunately the market for gems has crashed pretty hard in the last month, gems sell for half that price now, so the party is over (at least on my server). The cut or raw gems now hardly sell for more than their mats. Im burning off my remaining supplies, thanks to xmute procs you can still make a small profit using this technique but its much more in line with the other professions

/agreedThe info in this article is pretty dated. Maybe someone who had never thought it out could benefit, but there have been several changes in the game which have reduced the profitability of this scheme.1. Frozo has sunk the cost of eternals (while skyrocketing the price of frozen orbs)2. Icy Prism cost change has basically eliminated the market for chalcedony, et al.3. as a result, everyone is putting those gems in to the metas, so there is no market for that4. the author as much as acknowledges that the market for Wrath enchanting mats (particularly infinite dust) has collapsed, and that is where the real profit in this scheme was; disenchanting the jewelry (the money from everything else paid for the mats). So now you are left with a bunch of unsellable products for the time put in.The beauty of the Auction House is that what is very valuable on my server is junk on yours, however, so that may not be the case across the board. Every article in this series should come with a big proviso at the beginning saying "your server may not show the same results". But I would seriously look at the cost of chalcedony, titanium bars and saronite ore on your AH before I started this shuffle out fresh.I also don't understand the reasoning behind the gem transmute example provided; if a cardinal ruby was selling at 200g and a scarlet for 50 plus another 30 for the eternal fire . . . I can make 120g profit transmuting the cardinal, with a chance to proc as a transmutation spec alchemist. Is there an epic gem that sells for less than the cost of the xmute mats? I haven't found one. Yes, scarlet ruby used to be king, but that was last year, so get over it already. Playing the market means being flexible in your income stream, and going where the profit is. Not sticking with what used to work.I will throw a bone out to everyone though - there is a jewelcrafting product that can be obtained from your daily JC run and leftovers of last night's heroics that is doing extremely well for me on the AH right now. No limitless profit, but a good daily income stream that covers all my other activity (AH posting, repairs, basic supplies). Look in to that.

@Bond Cardinal rubies and other raw epic gems sell on many servers for about the same thing- they're both purchasable with 10k honor, and while there is always more demand for reds, there's more supply now. You need to look at all the epics and figure out which one has the best profit, based on the mats needed to transmute as well as the market price. This is rarely the reds, now.Chalcedony sells for a lot these days because of alchemists making meta gems. You can vendor the green jewelery that used to be disenchanted for a decent amount- more than cutting and vendoring the gems at least. Also, @gbta, on most servers, frozen orbs are the price of a frost lotus and eternal fire, since you can trade them for that now. Because of this, it's no longer profitable to make icy prisms. It's much more profitable to use the mats elsewhere.
