The info in this article is pretty dated. Maybe someone who had never thought it out could benefit, but there have been several changes in the game which have reduced the profitability of this scheme.
1. Frozo has sunk the cost of eternals (while skyrocketing the price of frozen orbs)
2. Icy Prism cost change has basically eliminated the market for chalcedony, et al.
3. as a result, everyone is putting those gems in to the metas, so there is no market for that
4. the author as much as acknowledges that the market for Wrath enchanting mats (particularly infinite dust) has collapsed, and that is where the real profit in this scheme was; disenchanting the jewelry (the money from everything else paid for the mats). So now you are left with a bunch of unsellable products for the time put in.
The beauty of the Auction House is that what is very valuable on my server is junk on yours, however, so that may not be the case across the board. Every article in this series should come with a big proviso at the beginning saying "your server may not show the same results". But I would seriously look at the cost of chalcedony, titanium bars and saronite ore on your AH before I started this shuffle out fresh.
I also don't understand the reasoning behind the gem transmute example provided; if a cardinal ruby was selling at 200g and a scarlet for 50 plus another 30 for the eternal fire . . . I can make 120g profit transmuting the cardinal, with a chance to proc as a transmutation spec alchemist. Is there an epic gem that sells for less than the cost of the xmute mats? I haven't found one. Yes, scarlet ruby used to be king, but that was last year, so get over it already. Playing the market means being flexible in your income stream, and going where the profit is. Not sticking with what used to work.
I will throw a bone out to everyone though - there is a jewelcrafting product that can be obtained from your daily JC run and leftovers of last night's heroics that is doing extremely well for me on the AH right now. No limitless profit, but a good daily income stream that covers all my other activity (AH posting, repairs, basic supplies). Look in to that.
