The value of epic gem transmutes for me is it prevents me from having to buy so many epics, since I am upgrading seven sets of gear among four 80's (I cut and socket easily more than seven epic gems a week, on average). In other words, preventing unnecessary expense in gearing and raiding materials costs is not a trivial benefit to my personal economy.
