New Cataclysm Preview: Vashj'ir: Surviving the Depths

This afternoon we have a new preview of another Cataclysm zone, this time the zone of Vashj'ir. Vashj'ir is partially an underwater zone that lets the players face off against the Naga. There will be both Alliance and Horde forces present, including submarines and naval ships for both factions.
This is where we'll also see the five-man dungeons of the Throne of the Tides and the Abyssal Maw. Additional details on the new Cataclysm dungeons can be found here.
The zone is for players level 78 to 82.
Blizzard's full statement after the break.

Vashj'ir: Surviving the DepthsOnce a great Highborne city housing some of the most revered night elves of Kalimdor, Vashj'ir was swallowed by the Great Sea in the Sundering and thought to be lost forever. Queen Azshara, formerly a beloved leader of the Highborne, escaped death in the depths of the sea when the Well of Eternity imploded. Such salvation came at a great cost, as the queen and many of her fellow Highborne were forever transformed into the monstrous naga, doomed to wander the seas for thousands of years. Their existence mostly remains a mystery to the peoples of modern Azeroth, though the Earthen Ring has learned of Azshara's naga seizing Vashj'ir for an unknown purpose as the cries of the elements echo across Azeroth from the Abyss.
The Sunken City
Vashj'ir is a level 78-82 zone in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm where players will be called to explore the depths of the Great Sea and stop the naga from seizing immeasurable power from the realm of Neptulon the Tidehunter. This expansive underwater zone will feature an unprecedented fight for survival against the naga overwhelming the area, several new quest hubs -- including Alliance and Horde naval ships and submarines -- all-new underwater travel and combat mechanics, several pocketed undersea caves free from water's grip, two new five-player dungeons (Throne of the Tides and Abyssal Maw), and the first-ever opportunity to explore the remains of the once-majestic city of Vashj'ir!
Bottled Distress Message Found Adrift at Sea
Need your help. Time is short. I'm held captive in what I hope to be a nightmare.
Enjoying the ocean air just days ago. We were determined to control key trade routes through victory at sea over the Horde. Their fleet came into our scopes. Our world became the deafening sound of battle, the smell of gunpowder, and the feeling of fear. Looking back now, though, that wasn't real fear.
We weren't alone in those waters. Our naval warfare attracted attention and rendered us prey. With our vessel already torn apart and taking on water, we saw a tremendous creature rise from the depths and shatter the hull, sucking us down to the sea floor. It all happened so fast. I was quick to tread the waters, hoping to regroup with any survivors I could find through a dense garden of kelp, constantly gasping for a chance breath. That's when the onslaught began. From all directions swarms of brutal naga swept through and captured a great many of us. Beaten near to death, I awoke in agony, bound in chains.
And here I still sit. I can only describe our prison as very big and somehow very much alive. We're in the hands of the naga now. Surviving crewmates in better condition than me are driven into slave labor.
One escaped. Thomas. He didn't make it far before I saw him dragged back. Before being forced into labor, he spoke in a panic about some large shell protecting this living prison, expansive night elf ruins in the distance, strange naga rituals underway, and sea vrykul battling our captors. He made little sense. Could be mad. Or I could be mad to hope vrykul are fighting to free us.
Prison patrols out again. Send word to Stormwind. Sunken city far from extinct. Naga plotting something horrific. Please help.

I've gotta say, this looks really awesome.
Let's just hope that they fixed water combat!

AltairAntares Apr 15th 2010 3:54PM

Exactly .. The first thing I thought when I read this is that I hope I can avoid the zone somehow since it's such a pain in the ass currently. :)

yeah... fighting underwater is terrible. This is the first piece of cataclysm that I haven't had a positive feeling about.

"yeah... fighting underwater is terrible. This is the first piece of cataclysm that I haven't had a positive feeling about."
That's why they specifically mentioned that fighting underwater in this zone will be like fighting on land at Blizzcon.

Absolutely! I am so excited for Cataclysm, in general. But, updates like this really make happy. I can't wait to explore this zone! It looks gorgeous from the pictures we've seen. And, I was always looking forward to underwater areas, like this. I can't wait! :D

Underwater combat - Joust with your Mastercraft Kalu'ak poles to breathe underwater while on your sea turtles!

This will prolly be most intresting starting zone I've seen so far.
Hellfire was hell after while (mob aggro range and their placements with like 30-40 blue gear at 58 was HELL).
Borean tundra was plain boring.
Fjord was nice but quest rewards were kinda bad (hardly any blue rewards) and the walking to places was long and too much stuff going upward (hills up hills down hills up lifts lifts lifts). Otherwise fjord was beatiful zone.
Im not sure about the stuff being stuffed tho. Pics look like eco-domes fron netherstorm, if you rememeber those. Then again I'm sure its promotional stuff to get most intresting most stuffed places into pictures. Very very intresting and very different Im sure.

My first thoughts exactly...
How will underwater combat be done.
Good thing though, they also said Mount Hyjal will be a lvl 78 - 82 zone. So those that like or hate the Underwater dynamic will get a choice of entry zones, just like in Northrend.
I think I'll hit up Hyjal just because I'd rather kill Twilight's Hammer peeps than Naga
@Leviathon
I have not heard of them changing it for Cata, but I sure hope you're right :)

The hype machine for Cataclysm is almost at full speed ahead. Glad they're finally letting us in on the lore/background for the new zones.
Pauguster Apr 15th 2010 3:43PM
I am gonna so love being a Warlock down here
Ashleigh Apr 15th 2010 4:15PM
Or not. "Can I get a summon? Can I get underwater breathing? Can I get a summon? Can I get underwater breathing? Can I get a summon? Can I get underwater breathing?..."
Edge Apr 15th 2010 6:12PM
Except every quest will also come with it's requisite underwater breathing potions and again make my Shammy's water breathing spell useless. Still it looks cool, and I am excited for a new kind of undewater fighting. Would be cool if it was something like fighting in low gravity or something, so we jump twice as high and all our moves are like slow mo (though I don't know if it would go as far as lowering cooldowns as well and run speed as well).
Ebylon Apr 15th 2010 3:43PM
I'm so happy Vrykul will be in the game outside of Northrend.
Volaro Apr 15th 2010 4:10PM
This. I'm glad they're not going the way of the ethereals.
Tomatketchup Apr 15th 2010 4:16PM
For some reason I was thinking "HARDCORE"!
Maybe because vikings are hardcore, and since vrykuls are based of that...
EXTREME METAL VIKINGS OF TIDAL DOOM VERSUS ANCIENT ALIEN SERPENTS OF RISEN SEA *hardcore metal guitar in the background*

"EXTREME METAL VIKINGS OF TIDAL DOOM VERSUS ANCIENT ALIEN SERPENTS OF RISEN SEA *hardcore metal guitar in the background*"
I'd buy that expansion.
SlashySlash Apr 15th 2010 5:39PM
LMFAOZ! GO 'EAVY EMTAL VIKING FROM UNDERWATER EXPANSION!!!!
Eternauta Apr 15th 2010 8:46PM
Exactly my thoughts.
Also, EARTHEN RING CONFIRMED! YAY!
Underwater Zone + Sea Vrykul + Earthen Ring + Submarines = Win.
This is the Shaman expansion, Earthen Ring is a must have (it's leader will be Thrall, most likely)
