YES YES! That would be more awesome than words.
Although I think they should save such a model for something special, like dropping from 100man Deathwing on super-heroic mode.

i dont see them selling BLING items that bad. if they start selling raid/pvp gear then i will se them going in a horible direction with these transactions
steven Apr 15th 2010 3:16PM
To me, it is no different then Blizz putting the loot card in TCG only instead of having to buy a lot of decks of cards, or spend hundreds on eBay, you go straight to the horses mouth for the mount.
Sorry, was really bad. I will go back to work now. Getting mine tomorrow. :)

Does anybody really fly anywhere anymore anyway?
The only time I use my [free Ebon Gryphon] mount is to fly for 2 minutes to Icecrown from Krasus' Landing.

just bought mine ;-)

I've got to be honest, I do not understand the issue.
First off, Blizzard can sell whatever they want. It is irelevant that I pay a monthly subscription, it is irrelevent that I bought the game. Blizzard wants to charge $199 for an expansion, $50 a month to play, and $25 for each gear upgrade... they can do it. They are allowed to, nothing can stop them except the market value of doing so. If people pay it, then they do it. If people don't pay it, they don't do it. Simple.
Second off, how is a mount any more or less "useful" than a companion pet? No one, I repeat no one is going to play WoW, level to 20, pay game gold for riding training, pay real money for this mount and then never buy another in game mount. No one. Even if they did, why would it matter? If this was a 400% mount, shot lasers from it's eyes in PVP, pooped gold bunnies, and the only way to get it was to shell out real world dollars, I'd understand. I wouldn't agree per se, but I'd understand. But it's not, it matches whatever you've already acquired in game. Getting this mount conveys no PVE, PVP, Soloing or Questing advantage to those who buy it.
Slippery slope? To what exactly? To Blizzard selling gear upgrades? New abilities? Gold? Whole characters and accounts? Maybe. I don't believe they will go any farther than vanity items, but even if they did, what does it matter? See point #1. If people are willing to do it, it will exist. If enough people want to consider it "not ok" it will go away.

Truth!
People, not Blizzard, make these transactions possible.
Blizzard will stop the micro-transactions when people stop buying them. Until then, the cash cow will continue to plump up.

@Sicadastra
Totally agree with you.
Ron Apr 15th 2010 3:52PM
I really want a mount that poops gold bunnies now...
musicchan Apr 15th 2010 3:20PM
Frankly, I think this is a good idea. A mount is no more useful than a pet, especially considering the majority of the cost exists in the skill, not the mount itself.
This is an AMAZING looking mount and that they're not restricting it to high end raiders makes me EXTREMELY HAPPY. Everyone should be able to get a spectacular looking mount, reguardless of play style and this is it. People who get the instance mounts will still have their "look at me, I can do hard content" mounts and people who have a little extra money will have the chance to get something really neat as well.
If you don't want it, you don't buy it. If you want it, you get the money for it. Simple as that and it's not hurting anyone.
Erin Apr 15th 2010 3:27PM
I completely agree with this.
Sicadastra Apr 15th 2010 3:34PM
Great point. Whether you agree with micro transactions or not, you have to be thankful that Blizzard is offering them as high quality items. They could just as easily be selling a really crappy looking mount or poorly animated pets for the same amount. They put work into these.
For those who say "but it took some korean a day to draw it". Shut up. Just shut the hell up. Jackson Pollock flings paint at canvas for 15 minutes and make a million bucks. Do not try and equate the time investment in creation to the value of creation.

This.

I don't personally consider a mount a useful item. There are plenty of mounts available within the game, and many are pretty easy to get. And since it adjusts to your current riding skill it doesn't have any effect on gameplay. Any flavor items like mounts, pets, even tabards and shirts, would be fine to sell for real money. They shouldn't ever sell things like armor or weapons though, and if they did I'd leave the game. Anything that effects gameplay should be earned within the game.

Adam Holisky hate/fear mongering in a post? This never happens!
chibispiff@ Apr 15th 2010 3:22PM
There's nothing really wrong with them selling the mount direct. There have already been several mounts that could be acquired with real money. There are the TCG mounts (Spectral Tiger anyone) and then of course the Refer A Friend mounts. So there is already plenty of precedent for the sale of mounts.
bongato Apr 15th 2010 3:25PM
It's odd for me, in general selling the pets kinda bothered me because they are generally things available to all, even if there is some grinding involved; and they are asking us to pay for something we would otherwise likely have access to (provided they made them, and if they didn't we'd never miss them would we?).
On the other hand, there are few really truly awesome looking mounts available to those who do not do 25man raids and are relatively new to the game. So for mounts, I think it's awesome- and frankly, quite preferable to paying hundreds of RL dollars for a TCG mount. In any case, compared to how common the one will be vs the other, the price seems somehow more fair than it does for the pets.
Yeah I know the two don't quite jive, but there you have it.
Joshua Apr 15th 2010 3:25PM
This mount will ruin the game for the following reason:
Players who buy this mount will have an extra button on their UI! Thats right an EXTRA button. How dare Big Blue give players who spend 25 dollars such an unfair advantage over players who are forced to have both a ground mount and a flying mount on their UI.
This is the final Straw!
Lol it a pretty silly argument. Blizzard has a great amount of respect for the players of their fine products, and this is a way they can increase their bottom line and reward their loyal fan base with shinny gear, while not taking away from the overall experience!
