Cataclysm mount changes

Bashiok - #BlizzChat Developer Chat on Twitter 4/16Q: Do you intend to have all 280% flying mounts scale to 310% when a 310% mount is earned, or will only purchased mounts do so?
A: Our current plan, is that in Cataclysm, you can learn a new rank of flying that lets all flying mounts move at 310% (even current 280% mounts). That will probably be as fast as mounts will ever get. We don't like it that when you get a 310% mount that you stop using your old ones.
Q: If 310% speed is becoming trainable, does that mean we'll be able to fly in Azeroth from the get-go?
A: We have considered the concept of "Old Weather Flying." Just kidding. More than likely, you'll just be able to fly from the beginning.

No word yet on if players with current 310% speed mounts will still have to learn this new rank of flying skill or not. Previously, 310% speed mounts were seen as status symbols and prizes to be gained via achievements, PvP, rare drops or so on. Personally, I'm hoping people with 310% speed mounts are at least grandfathered in as it would be annoying otherwise to not even be able to ride your mount once the change went live.
On the up side, at least we'll be able to fly in Azeroth right away instead of having to train yet another rank of flying.
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will destroy Azeroth as we know it. Nothing will be the same. In WoW.com's Guide to Cataclysm you can find out everything you need to know about WoW's third expansion. From Goblins and Worgens to Mastery and Guild changes, it's all there for your cataclysmic enjoyment.Filed under: Blizzard, News items, Cataclysm

This is a good move. I don't really understand the argument for keeping 310% 'special'. The 'special' factor is the mount itself. the speed just means you have a longer wait at your destination while the rest of the group catches up, surely?
The speed helps everyone spend more time playing the game and less time travelling. If the speed helped in some combat-orientated way, I'd agree with the detractors. But it doesn't. It's just abou travelling at a speed imperceptable to anyone except the person riding it at the time.
How exactly are you getting your e-peen from that?

I'll be happy if all my other mounts get the 310% upgrade from my violet proto =)
But does it mean that any mount at all could be 310 % ? Even the 60 % ones, as long as you have learned max riding skill ? That would be nice, especially if they extend it to ground mounts. I like the look of some of the slower ground mounts, so maybe they could get a running boost too ? Pwetty pwease ?

You'll note that they said "310% is probably as fast...."
They also said we will NEVER be able to fly in the Old World.
We will see a new, faster mount. Bet on it.

It sounds like this is something that you'd get a 310% mount and then pay a fee for "training" to boost your other mounts. It doesn't make sense for them to just offer 310% at 85 arbitrarily.
This way the drive to earn the special mounts is still there, but you're not stuck on the same ride constantly.

Incoming QQ from the WoW community.
Are some of you new to MMOs? That's pretty much just the nature of the beast. You work hard to get something before others and eventually everyone has it. You are rewarded with having it sooner. Congrats.
Bring on 310% training.

Nothing in this post or previous comments regarding 280--->310% supports the idea they are making 310% available to all regardless of whether or not they have it already. I'm not sure why people keep thinking this. If anything, the last line Bashiok says "We don't like it that when you get a 310% mount that you stop using your old ones " can be read to support what they previously have said which was that people with 310% speed mounts would be able to make all their mounts that speed through some means.

I'm all for people that worked hard to get their 310% mount to auto upgrade all their slower flying mounts as a reward for free. Anyone with 280% or lesser should pay a training fee. Since epic is little less than 5000g and I think 10kg is way to much, something in the nieghborhood of 7.5kg would be reasonable. I'd also hope that the 310% wouldn't be available unless you paid your dues in Northrend. Maybe obtainable after level 77 (to ensure the newbies don't get it to early). And by the way, I don't have mine yet.

My guess is those that have a 310% mount will automatically get the skill just like in Vanilla to BC, those that had a PvP mount got the epic riding skill for free also.
My guess is this the cost to upgrade will be quite steep (10k+). A ~10% upgrade in mount speed is not THAT big of a difference.
You will definately see a faster mount available or there will be a big diaspora of hardcore players.
Whether you want to admit it or not, it basically boils down to an Epeen thing.

"Old Weather Flying" ... this cracked me up. You could here the screams of millions at the mere suggestion ...
:)

I reeeeeally hope it's not a giant gold sink, because I started playing my main on the tail end of BC, and I'm still saving up for a battered hilt. I've only just started with sinking my gold. D:

any word on whether the slow fliers (150% now i think) will also get boosted?
how about land mounts? can we expect to see 60% rides go to 100%? i hope so. some of the unarmored versions of mounts just look better.

Not happy at all I worked very hard for my 310% mount
