Given that going from 150% to 280% is already a "gold check", it would be nice if the upgraded flying skill from 280% to 310% depended on something more creative than spending more gold. Perhaps all existing 310% mounts can automatically grant the upgrade, and future methods of obtaining the upgrade to 310% will be comparable to raid and holiday achievements like what we've seen so far.It would also be nice if high-end raiding rewards continued to include mount that are not merely cosmetic, but are functional improvements like the current 310% proto-drakes. If they want to get away from the design where attaining one high-speed mount makes you abandon the other ones, then either make the reward unlock a high speed for all mounts or offer unique mechanics like the sea turtles, motorbikes, and mammoths.Their intentions are sound, but there's a certain danger here of over-homogenizing rewards (or ways to get rewards).

Furthermore - and I realize that in the age of the Celestial Steed, it might be really contrarian of me to say this - but when we're talking about a marginal (but useful) upgrade like 280% to 310%, I honestly don't think that's something everyone should have. As with the Violet Proto-Drake, it doesn't need to be a raiding or arena achievement here, but it should be a little out of reach unless you go out of your way to aim for it.

I don't know. I definitely understand your feelings on the matter. For me, it's sort of the opposite, though. I don't really find it necessary for mount drops from raids or arena rewards to be anything but cosmetic upgrades. I sort of like the idea of them being just that, to be honest. I've got my Violet Proto and I don't mind at all that everyone will most likely be able to learn 310% riding, come Cataclysm. If people still want the Violet Proto, they will still have to earn all the achievements. For me, it was the mount that was the reward, not the speed. I think that flying mount drops should be like ground mount drops. People still farm for the rare ground mounts that drop from many instances and they have never gone above 100% speed. But, people do it for their cosmetic value. I think that flying mount drops should work the same way. I'd definitely still work for an awesome looking flying mount, even if it was the same speed as what everyone else already had. It's just about the mount, itself, for me and not about the speed.

Well, as sad as I feel to say it, if you're concern is over-homogenization, I believe that ship sailed a while ago. When we have 45 plate shoulders all based on the same model, tier gear that looks the same for every plate class, and myriad other recent additions that re-skin or provide limited modification, everything already looks like everything else. Why not add mounts to that equation?I'm not one of those people who waxes nostalgic for the Vanilla WoW much - the experience of Wrath is far superior to many of more difficult or "grindier" efforts in Vanilla - but at least in Vanilla people looked different - what they looked like reflected the experience they had in game. I'm afraid in the pursuit of easier opportunities to create cash flow, Blizzard has decided we can all be unique - just like everybody else.

Earn Skybreakers whip by doing the netherwing flying quest chain - if you get the whip - you get the skill. Seems fair to me - like doing the driving test. If you can fly well - yes you get the new speed mounts, if you cant your on the 'restricted' model
