Breakfast Topic: I just bought a $25 imaginary horse

World of Warcraft is not new to the world of microtransactions, or in this case, macrotransactions. I do not believe anyone considers $25 to be a microtransaction, which seems like a healthy bit of cash. A few thoughts came to my mind. First, we now have the Blizzard price list for all sorts of purchased add-on content and the range of money we will be shelling out in the future. Pets are $10; mounts are $25. The celestial horse's success yesterday proved beyond a doubt that the $25 pricetag was not a deterrent for many purchasers, as the queue pushed over 100,000 people at times in the U.S. store alone. Early sales were estimated to be in the 400,000 area, with more climbing steadily. This horse is a hit.
My second thought was how drastically the dynamic has changed for Blizzard and why, potentially, it has changed. This past year showed a stagnation in the number of accounts created for World of Warcraft, leaving Blizzard with the same number to tell shareholders at their next meeting a year later. With new ways to monetize the player base other than the number of accounts, Blizzard has essentially given shareholders the go on holding onto increasingly valuable Activision Blizzard stock and to expect wonderful new profit generators. New ways to monetize existing subscriber bases are always being explored, and the Celestial Steed has cemented the pet and mount store as one of the absolutely critical endeavors.
This is only the beginning for macrotransactions in World of Warcraft. As long as the items up for sale do not give another player an advantage and stay purely cosmetic (with the exception of the race change, which has the potential to alter balance), I am confident Blizzard will provide some compelling additions to the already mind-blowingly successful pet and mount store.
What do you think about the Celestial Steed and what it represents? $25 seems to be a sweet spot if the sales are to be believed, but what do you think?

Honestly, I want one still.
Haven't gotten around to buying one yet for some strange reason (Grinding for emblems etc)
But yeah, it's a STAGGERING amount of money blizzard has made, and I envy them for it!
Lets just hope the don't start selling tier gear
Burnunit Apr 19th 2010 8:12AM
the day the start selling gear, is the day I cancel my account and mail my CDs (shattered into pieces) with well articulated hate mail to blizzards front door.
Thyago Apr 19th 2010 8:44AM
I'll do the same, like "Good bye, Azeroth. Hello, Jedi Council!"
Gothia Apr 19th 2010 9:13AM
Hear Ye ! Hear Ye !
Coming up, Heirloom gear, Level fees, Gold brokers, Character cosmetics, and Reputation taxes.
Activisions greed for your dollars has only begun.
(Blizzard lost control the day they merged - easy mode raiding, bring the player, faction / character transfers, recruit a friend, race change, vanity pets, and now mounts - this isn't a slippery slope, it's an avalanche)
Vandersveldt Apr 19th 2010 9:52AM
I understand he was voted down for how he said it, but you can't deny all of those things happened after the merger. Blizzard was hardcore nerdy types, they didn't care if people disagreed with their methods, THEY agreed with their methods and that was all that mattered. The point was to get like minded nerds together that enjoyed that type of game, and if you weren't like that, I'm sure they could have VERY politely shown you some other games that you would enjoy instead.
squidpuppet Apr 19th 2010 10:14AM
When was this exactly? Blizzard was far from a little indie developer which wasn't concerned about money long before the merger.
The truth, as I see it anyway, is that they need to keep the game profitable to keep it going (how big is the in-game tech support team? How many devs, artists, and Q&As do they need to pay?) So if people want to shell out for a flying-space-pony, fine, it'll keep my server up and running.
If you don't approve, don't buy one. It's not "the end of WoW" or "proof that Blizz has gone to hell."

"(Blizzard lost control the day they merged - easy mode raiding, bring the player, faction / character transfers, recruit a friend, race change, vanity pets, and now mounts - this isn't a slippery slope, it's an avalanche)"
How DARE they make the game better! How DARE they!

Mine will not be articulate. Mine will be a flaming bag with my cats saved up shit for a year in it. It will be projected via a home made replica trebouchet DIRECTLY at the author of the idea - and this action will be repeated at every Blizzard conference, every address i can find, and ofc all over Blizzards overlords - activision.
Or in other words - i wont like it either. :)

Ooh, you hot little drama whore... tease. Honestly, Blizzard has taken proceeds of such sales in the past and given half to charity. No idea if this will happen here, with the mount, but this could be the case.
I have no problem with Blizzard selling cosmetic, fun little items through the Blizzard store. This harms nobody. You are not required to buy. This new operation, in fact, does nothing to harm you or your playing ability, enjoyability.
So... what's the big deal?

What, are you already saving up your cat's shit just in case?

I have no problem with Blizz selling mounts in their online store.
I do, however, have a HUGE problem with it being the COOLEST MOUNT IN THE GAME and being available to EVERY TOM DICK AND FAIRY LEVEL 20 RUNNING AROUND ELWYNN. This mount IMMEDIATELY lost its cool factor to me once i found this out.
Level 20s should not be able to buy an EPIC FLYING MOUNT from the online store when they can't even use in-game epic mounts yet. (I know, i know, they can't use the epic speed or flying part till they train for it, but still, it looks exactly the same for them as it does for someone who has trained higher than them. It puts every other mount they can get for the next 59 levels to shame, and that just doesn't seem right.)
What Blizz should have done is made the looks of the horse scale with your riding training. (Heirlooms do this, don't they?) For example, it shouldn't have armor until you train for epic riding, it shouldn't have wings until you train for flying, and it shouldn't shoot out stars until you train for epic flying. This way it would still be a cool and worthy purchase for any level character, but it wouldn't look exactly the same for a level 20 as it does a level 80. It would more closely match existing mounts at your level but still allow you to grow into it and have something to look forward to. Its coolness at higher levels wouldn't be ruined by it looking exactly the same at lower levels.

I'm still a supporter of the whole pet store thing. And, I'm thrilled with how well the Celestial Steed has sold. That means much more money for Blizzard, which is better for anyone that plays their games.
I don't know that I'll ever end up buying the Celestial Steed, though. But, I might. It's not that I don't think it's pretty, 'cause I do. And, I think it's fantastic that it scales with your riding level (up to 310%), is BoA, and usable by toons level 20 and up. If you're someone who really loves the look of it, you're set for mounts, for every future toon you ever make and that's pretty awesome. But, I'd rather wait and see what mounts are to come. Because, unless you're well off, $25 dollars isn't pocket change; and, I'd rather wait and pay that for a mount that I just can't bear to live without. And, as cool as the Celestial Steed is, I've gotta save up for my 2-seater rocket mount. :3
All that being said, my one and only concern remains the same -- I'm just afraid that as time progresses and the pet store becomes even more lucrative, that the team will begin to feel that their time and resources are better spent working on items for the pet store, that can be sold for real world cash. And, that working on in-game obtainable vanity items (pets, mounts, etc) will begin to feel like a waste of their time. And, that it will reach a point where the only pets/mounts obtainable in-game will be cheap knockoffs that aren't nearly as well done as the ones sold in the pet store, or that they'll be reserved for raid rewards and the like.
If something like this does happen, I would never rage-quit or anything that ridiculous and immature. But, I will admit, my desire to play the game would steadily and quickly decline. I can't raid hardcore like some folks. I honestly just don't have the time, nor the computer to do so. But, I thoroughly enjoy 5-mans, questing, all the professions, etc. And, collecting pets and mounts are at the top of my list of fun things to do in the game.
I love to farm for pets and mounts. I can do it solo, on my own time frame, and it's just really fun. I got the sea turtle mount only days after it was implemented and I loved every minute of fishing that was required. I could take breaks to handle real life issues, in between, and do whatever I needed. It took me about three hours or so total and I had a blast. And, in the end, I got a really cool mount and an awesome achievement. I was a happy camper. These are the things that I would miss the most, if my fears came to fruition.
So, I'm thrilled for the extra profit Blizz is making, I'm glad that so many people are getting to enjoy awesome pets, and now mounts, from the pet store. I just hope that everyone involved will keep their heads high and keep the integrity of the game, despite all the dollar signs that are floating around, with this change. I want this game to continue to be successful and there are many things I'd put money towards. (being able to change classes is at the top of my list - I'd seriously save up and pay around $75 for this) But, I also want to enjoy the game for what it is. There should be equally as wonderful pets and mounts, obtainable in-game, as there are sold at the pet store. I don't just want reskinned pets, either. I want more perky pugs, more argent tournament type pets, etc.
We should be able to have both. Pet store pets/mounts should feel like awesome additions to already awesome in-game obtainable pets/mounts.

As I said in a previous thread, the 'Slippery Slope' argument is a logical fallacy:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slippery_slope
I find it very sad, though not surprising, that the sky-is-falling "BLIZZARD WILL SELL EVERYTHING NOW!!!11!!" comments keep getting upvoted.
Byron Apr 19th 2010 11:28PM
"I'll do the same, like "Good bye, Azeroth. Hello, Jedi Council!""
Unfortunately, if this works for Bliz, SW:tOR will probably copy it.
Regarding the celestial horse, it should have been a rare drop from Alagalon, and 310% speed. That would at least keep people returning to old content (which my new Engineer Prot Warrior wants to farm for mechanohog mats).
Selling it turns what should have been beautiful and unique into something commonplace and meh. Pity.
tim Apr 19th 2010 9:58PM
@MusedMoose
That slippery slope is a logical fallacy is a moot point. I've yet to see anyone say:
Blizzard is selling mounts.
Ergo, by the slippery slope argument, Blizzard must necessarily sell armor sets, too.
The point is that selling mounts is setting a precedent closer to Blizzard selling items that impact the game balance. It's a psychological tendency... not a logical issue, and whether you agree with it or not is not reducible to a logical statement.
Eturyu Apr 19th 2010 11:26PM
@Musedmoose:
Please read your own link with care, as it states:
"Modern usage includes a logically valid form, in which a minor action causes a significant impact through a long chain of logical relationships. Note that establishing this chain of logical implication (or quantifying the relevant probabilities) makes this form logically valid. The slippery slope argument remains a fallacy if such a chain is not established. "
What we are all saying, is that a chain is being established, thus negating your comment.
P.S Wikki is not the best source anyways lol
that is all.

Lemme get this straight: You're saving up approximately a year's worth of your cat's poop, and building a working trebuchet just in CASE Blizzard starts selling gear/levels??? WOW, that's dedication! Carry on, sir...
