I like quests. I like reading quests. Sure, every now and again it's a straightforward "Please go kill
x animals for
y body parts and I will give you
z gold," but sometimes the stories involved with the quests or the quest NPCs themselves are tremendously entertaining. Take
Ragged John, for example -- while the little weirdo no longer gets to tell his epic tale, listening to
his story while working on the Onyxia chain was a ... rare treat. Or one of my personal favorites,
Jenal over in Darnassus. There's not much to Jenal, but the tiny bit of character interaction when you speak with him always left me wondering what exactly Jenal's full story was. As for the Horde, I always loved Valormok out in Azshara and
the story of the little band of Horde that had been sent out there, especially
Jediga and her little, uh,
side business of stealing artifacts for people. I have to admit while I'm looking forward to seeing the "new" Azshara come
Cataclysm, there's part of me that is going to miss the little wayward band.
One of the
other things I like are the
realm forums. Sure, there's an unending supply of depressing drama and whining. But sometimes you end up with a
little chunk of gold in the middle of it all, and those gold moments make it worth trawling -- well, to me, anyway. The gold for the day today is from
Nozz over on US Sisters of Elune, who brought up an old topic from way back that ties my love for quests together nicely with my love for playing the game in general: If your character were a quest giver, what would his/her quest be?
The thread already has some interesting answers, but I'd love to see some answers from you guys. Would it be a straightforward "Kill 20 zhevras and pray they have hooves?" A simple request to listen to a story? A long chain sending players all over the world? Or a simple "I'm hungry; go get me some
bread"? What would you give as a reward, if anything? Have at it, readers!

My character (a gnome fury warrior) would demand fist weapons and daggers! She's got to prepare for single-minded fury, so that she can return to her glorious past of tiny stabby pwnage. (She misses the days of vanilla and BC, when a dagger and a fist weapon were viable fury tools.)
Grumblecakes Apr 20th 2010 8:13AM
Oh, and for a reward, she'd prolly give some two-hander that she doesn't need any more. Farewell, Titan's Grip!

Actually, a quest where you craft a weapon for a "special" character kinda does hit the snare with me.
I mean, it would really tie in with Weaponsmiths.
Kinda gives me chills. MAKE THAT QUEST BLIZZ, NOT HARD.

%t, I have been perfecting my fighting style, but there are no implements worthy of the true fury I can unleash! Mardega tells me she can craft a dagger befitting my glory, if I will provide her with the materials and some labor.
Bring Mardega X purified ore of the expansion, Y crystallized coal, and a Torch of the Elements, all of which can be picked up some place you're completing seven other quests.
Follow-up: Mardega has you add ingredients/work the Forge/mill/anvil/water bucket on her say so.
Return the Dagger to Grumblecakes.
Repeatable: Grumblecakes had too much fury and broke the dagger. Help Mardega craft a new one!

My main is a mage. I'd teleport you to various capital cities (with an item to return you to me) where you would collect magical information or items. Then you could hocus pocus it all together to make your awesome blue item.

I'd give a daily quest, where non-alchemy players could bring me alchemy mats and receive a small stack of the Flask they want. It would also grant Stormwind rep. And I'd get the procs.

"Please go kill x animals for y body parts and I will give you z gold,"
I see what you did there... ;)

Yeah, I agree that the new X quests sounds interesting, although I doubt the Y ones-...
...wait, that's terrible, I quit!
*takes some peas* ...just a handful for the road...

I would give a level 80 quest that requires you to return to your racial starting area, group with a low level player (level 5 or under) and fight against a lvl 82 boss in a phased instance of the starting area. The reward would be title and achievement for both players, maybe some emblems for the 80, and a piece of heirloom gear for the lowbie. The main point being to give the 80's a reason to go back home and complete something epic where they started - and to give the lowbies an idea of what they are ultimately working to become.

Great quest, post this on the Cataclysm forums and hopefully a developer will read this because I so want to do this quest now!
Kragragh Apr 20th 2010 8:46AM
Cool idea! I wish Blizzard would do a Mission Architect type of thing like CoH but instead, have it "moderated" and submitted, then they release a few new quests a week that players came up with. All they'd have to do is vet the entries.
Tirrimas Apr 20th 2010 9:06AM
I cannot tell you how much I love this idea.
Hairfish Apr 20th 2010 9:32AM
I'd roll a new lowbie just for the chance to do this. Great idea.
busuan Apr 20th 2010 10:35AM
Somehow, it makes me feel like Morgan Ladimore...

Nice a quest for members of each race to go back to their point of origin and save the low lvl starting zone from some powerful demented evil (aka. demon, dragon, etc.) while grouping with a low lvl character.
They could make him elite, but he shouldn't hit too hard, you dont want the first thing a new char experiences to be a wipe!?
clundgren Apr 20th 2010 11:58AM
LOVE this suggestion, but it can't just be a charity run. There has to be something meaningful for the lowbie to do, too.
For example, how about this for Silvermoon:
"Hero of the Blood Elf people, you have stood tall against the forces that have threatened our way of life, and fought well in our vengeful struggle against the madman Arthas. But even with the Lich King's fall, his minions are for from finished.
Even as we speak, a dark necromancer seeks to claim control over the scourge in this region. He has sent forces, powerful demons, to retrieve an amulet that will give him control over these scourge.
You must stop him. But you cannot do it alone. While you hold off the undead, this worthy acolyte will retrieve the amulet and return it to us. It will likely be guarded; proceed with care."
It could even be a mini-instance.
pandaba Apr 20th 2010 2:52PM
I think this is a great idea. The only thing I'd add would be the equivalent of the tenacity buff or the buffs received for events like Battle of the Undercity so the new character could be doing roughly equivalent damage as the 80+ they're paired with.
Hangk Apr 20th 2010 6:18PM
I think this is the best idea I've heard on this site so far.
Thes Apr 20th 2010 8:22AM
Wow 5 little words that made me stop and think for once "..what would his/her quest be?" Well my character is a paladin and I like to believe in being courteous and helping others although sometimes I do have my moments where I become disenfranchised and it all seems to much so if my character was a quest giver I would think it would be a paladin who after years of fighting the scourge in WPL had given up in the light and become disheartened because he felt like his efforts were all in vain. His quest while superficially would be and escort (also because some people find me annoying at times) along the way there would be certain scenarios where you were given the choice to help people or continue with the escort. The crux of it is do you take the quick option and finish your quest and receive a standard xp/gold reward or do you help the people and restore the paladins faith in people and earn bonus xp and a Blessing of Kings equivalent buff?
Who says a little morality with your questing is a bad thing?
ghola Apr 20th 2010 8:21AM
My paladin would have a questline/backstory that involved the Scarlet Crusade. I'd have players recover my old student journal from my time at the Monastery, my tabard from Hearthglen, and armor from Tyr's Hand. These items represent my old life and would be destroyed in some ceremony ending the quest. Title reward: Scarlet Redeemer.
