MMO Roundup: Star horses, extreme multi-boxing and more

Shut up people, come buy my horse Anti-Aliased, Sera Brennan's weekly column about just about anything, tackles Blizzard's explosive (and controversial) Celesetial Pony sales. How does this compare to microtransactions from other games? How does this look from the point of view of someone who plays MMOs other than WoW?

Intimate apparel among Final Fantasy XIV equipment When character creation previews started emerging for Final Fantasy XIV, one of the oft-heard bits of speculation was that there would be some way to customize your character's undergarments. Of course, the idea is on its face rather ridiculous. We shudder at the thought of farming a boss for underwear.

Turbine responds to community with removal of Offer Wall A few days ago, Turbine announced a new way of earning Turbine Points. We'd heard hints of this new method back at PAX East, and several of us at Massively were curious to see how it would work out. Well, we have our answer. The launch of the DDO Offer Wall was met with a pretty heated response -- a large portion of the Dungeons and Dragons Online fanbase was extremely displeased, to say the least.
EVE Online player creates incredible multi-box setup From irritating spam-bots to automated farming macros hogging the best spots, macros and bots are almost universally despised in every MMO. Multi-boxing, on the other hand, is a much more ambiguous idea that has been common since as far back as the early days of EverQuest. After a hit from the banhammer for "macro use," EVE Online player Zhek Kromtor engineered a low-tech solution to his rule-breaking problem..

Warhammer Online's 100% RvR city siege outlined in development notes Since its inception, Warhammer Online's greatest strength and selling point has been its Realm vs. Realm (RvR) gameplay between the forces of Order and Destruction. With the upcoming 1.3.5 patch, RvR is poised to claim its rightful birthright with 100% RvR city sieges (in the past, city sieges have been a mix of RvR and PvE). Yesterday, Mythic posted a slew of "In Development" notes pertaining to 1.3.5, specifically outlining their plans for the new edition of city sieges.

Alganon reveals much of the overhauled launch experience It's easy to get wrapped up in the war of words between the inimitable Derek Smart and the equally inimitable David Allen, but the whole reason behind that back-and-forth is a game. Much of the news coming out about Alganon has been both sides sniping at each other, but it looks like the development team has been hard at work revamping the game for an April 28th launch.

Does the Celestial Steed make sweet lemonade? I'm not buying it if it doesn't.

"We shudder at the thought of farming a boss for underwear."
Yes, but then you can get a lot of mileage out of guildies careless with their words:
"Woo hoo! Deathwing finally dropped my panties!"

"Multi-boxing, on the other hand, is a much more ambiguous idea that has been common since as far back as the early days of EverQuest."
Grrrrr. It was used before EQ, in UO. There were some impressive ones, too.
Hih Apr 20th 2010 3:28PM
I think they were simply trying to get the point across that "multiboxing has been around a long time" since a lot more people are going to know what EQ was than UO. If you wanted to get really technical, you could even make the case that one person using two or more characters in pen and paper D&D is multiboxing, and far precedes either UO or EQ.

Stroking its mane to turn it into a plane is fine; but NOT looking forward to changing it back again!

I dare say that sexy undergarments could quite possibly outsell sparkleponies.
Now, if they REALLY want to bank some money, they'd sell thong panties with pasties and a tattoo option for the lower back... Charge $50... make 10 times what sparklepony made.
Hal Apr 20th 2010 4:08PM
Um . . . no. Just no. Why?
Because you would see endless characters running around in said thong/pastie combo. Dancing on the mailboxes. Hanging out in Ironforge.
Do you want to see a beefy male draenei wearing thong panties and a pair of pasties? What about a male gnome?
Elves . . . well, there's probably no difference between the males and females.
Roy Apr 20th 2010 4:10PM
Heh. I am sure the men can have a set of leather chaps or something lol. or maybe a thong and a bowtie (chippendale style)

I would definitely pay $25 to have that 'Sweet Lemonade' horse as a mount.
Of course, it would have to be able to do a certain emote..
WALRUSLOL Apr 21st 2010 6:34PM
*sigh* Where did you go to school? You're writing skills are lawlrusly bad.
Alex Ziebart Apr 21st 2010 6:35PM
You really ought to reconsider bringing me into your game.

"Look at that horse
That horse is retarded
Give it a lick
Mmm - it tastes just like wasted money
With a stroke of its mane
It just stays the same
And then it keeps being useless
When you tug on its winky
Eww that's dirty
Do you think so?
Well I better not show you where
The money is going
Sweet Kotick
Mmm - sweet Kotick
Sweet Kotick
Yeah sweet Kotick
Just buy that horse
Send Bobby 'round the universe
And all the other places too
I think you'll find that the universe
Pretty much covers everything
Shut up failure, just buy that horse!"
