Gold Capped: Making gold with alchemy

Alchemy is an awesome way to make money in WoW. As we've said before, some businesses are proactive, requiring you to invest time and money in order to make profits. Some are reactive, allowing you to use a cooldown to craft something that's in demand for smallish volume of sales at high profit. Alchemy is unique in the sense that it allows you to both! You can craft and sell potions, flasks and elixirs, and you can transmute an epic gem once a day and Titanium Bars without a cooldown since patch 3.3.
Alchemy mastery specialization choice
Let's start with the easy part. Assuming you have an alchemist at 450 skill, you will really want to get a specialization. You have to choose between one of the three possibilities, unless you're crazy like some of my auctioneer buddies who have more than one alchemist!- Transmutation mastery is the most common spec among auctioneers. It allows you to proc extra items whenever you transmute. This is key if you're into the saronite-to-titanium market, and is well worth the time and money needed to get it solely based on the epic gem transmutes. You need to pick up the quest Master of Transmutation all the way back in Netherstorm.
- Elixir mastery (or flask mastery, as it should have been called) is another specialization you can get. It lets you proc additional freebies when you're making flasks, battle elixirs or guardian elixirs. You need to start off at the "Master of Elixirs" quest in the Shattrath's Lower City.
- Potion mastery is the last option, and (you guessed it!) it allows you to proc additional potions. The quest you must complete to get this is Master of Potions in the Cenarion Expedition area of Zangarmarsh.
Selling flasks and elixirs
Raiders are your biggest market for flasks and elixirs. Obviously, this means that your big nights will happen on the instance resets and weekends, when most people are in raids. I find that there's more competition on weekends, though, so focus my efforts on Tuesdays.Your two biggest sellers are going to be:
- Flask of Endless Rage is the physical DPS flask of choice. It's not the best for all specs and all classes, but it's certainly the most popular, because it lasts through death.
- Flask of the Frost Wyrm is the caster flask of choice, as well as the choice of many healers.
Selling potions
Potions are another big seller on raid nights. Most people like to have a stack of something or other on them when they're doing their end-game raiding or PvP. Guess what? The good ones are discovered by Northrend Alchemy Research again. Every three days! Don't forget!Your big sellers are the obvious ones: These potions restore health or mana or increase butt-kickery for short periods of time.
- Potion of Speed
- Potion of Wild Magic
- Indestructible Potion
- Runic Healing Potion
- Runic Mana Potion
- Powerful Rejuvenation Potion
Transmutation consideration
The last, and often most profitable, way to make money with an alchemist is transmutation. There are a bunch of transmutations that share a cooldown. If you transmute an epic gem, you can't transmute an eternal, for example. Anyway, now that the titanium transmutation has no cooldown, this is a large money-maker -- more so if you can buy Saronite Ore and smelt it yourself into Saronite Bars. Whether you sell the titanium or use it to craft something else that's profitable, this is probably the cheapest way to get it, especially if you factor in the extra 20% from transmute mastery.Transmuting epic gems basically free money. You start off with the ability to make anything but Cardinal Rubies (which require a quest); however, these days, the other ones are often more profitable. Especially since anyone can buy a Cardinal Ruby for 10,000 honor now. Look at the price of the mats for each epic gem, and look at the price for the raw gem. Whatever has the highest margin, do that. Even if you're prospecting saronite for your mats, take the most profitable one. The fact that you paid less for your mats doesn't mean that they're worth less. If you find that the Eye of Zul is the best margin, just sell your Scarlet Rubies (or cut and sell them).
Anyways, no matter how much or little thought you put into it, make sure you transmute something every day.

One note on those specific resist potions: While the market is small, if your timing is good, you can make a killing.
How do you get good timing? The short version is to pay attention to the progression of the raiding guilds on your server. When Heroic Anub'arak was the toughest fight in the game, any guild worth a damn working on Phase 3 went through 25 Mighty Frost Protection potions per attempt. Thats an awful lot of potions, and there /is/ a market there. But you need to be there early and you need to be ready for it. Watch the strategies on the very cutting edge of raiding, and look for unusual consumables.
(On a related note, here's a free tip: If guilds on your server are just getting to or beginning to get to Heroic LK, now is a good time to start selling mats required for leveling Engineering or Leatherworking, as Nitro Boosts and Drums of Speed are both extremely potent for this encounter!)

Most progressive raiding guilds will make resist pots for the raid without their raiders needing to buy them on the AH. The GM would just buy the mats and have a guild pot master make a truck load of them.
I've been an alchemist since vanilla and have found it quite hard to make decent money on the two servers I've actively raided on. The items that are guaranteed to sell are those main ones that Basil posted but the money I make from alchemy pales hugely to what I make selling enchanting scrolls, enchanting mats and jewelcrafting items sadly. With the introduction of inscription, it ramped up herb costs even further, therefore shrinking any moderate profit further. If you happen to be a herbalist with hours of farming time on your hands and huge amounts of luck finding frost lotus', then it might not be so bad.
Of course servers are different and maybe some alchemists are lucky enough to make a mint on their server - just don't assume it's a ticket to free gold. If you want that, take up enchanting and watch the gold roll in just from selling infinite dust!

Also on related note about hardmodes in ICC. You basically must have frost resistance gear for Sindragosa (25man atleast, it hits like truck http://www.wowhead.com/spell=71058 ). So yeah, those ilvl 200 frost resistance gears are still selling if theres new guilds progressing to sindragosa that havent bought such sets yet.

If grinding money isn't really your thing, definitely go with Master of Transmutation. Log in, click a button. If you're lucky, you'll get another 100g or 200g. :)
I normally do King's Amber, just because I tend to have a couple Eternal Lifes lying around (being an Alchemist/Herbalist, as it were). Mats, for both the gem and the eternal, run 6g to 10g each. It actually sort of kills my desire to do dailies, knowing I can make the same amount of gold in 5 seconds doing my daily transmute as doing the Argent Tournament dailies. :P

One thing to add:
If you have a Jewelcrafting alt with epic gem recipes, then DEFINITELY consider getting Master of Transmutation!

If the "profit spread" of the blue or yellow gem is only marginally higher than that for the cardinal ruby, it still probably makes sense to make the cardinal ruby if you are a transmute specialist. If you get the extra proc, you want extra of the most expensive gem.
Barring exceptionaly unusual market conditions, never transmute a green, purple or orange gem. Although the honor price is the same, these can be purchase with half the amount of triumph emblems.

The raw cardinal ruby may sell for less but once I cut it on my JC nothing sells like a runed or bold ruby.
Basil Berntsen Apr 22nd 2010 9:52AM
@L You're lucky- on my servers, cut reds after raid nights sometimes go for 110g, about 5 less than the uncuts sell for.

It sucks that I'm one of those paycheck-to-paycheck people with dailies...I can't raise my alchemy high enough to be able to do this in the next few weeks. Maybe I'll get lucky and somebody will buy my Merlin's robes for 5k >.>

I recently started getting back to using alchemy to make money. It really is a very flexible way to make gold. Also it makes things that people need to use in mass quantities and on a daily basis (ie pots and flasks) instead of an once in a while profession like jewelcrafting.

With Frost Lotus now being purchasable, some flasks have gone into the toilet in the price department.
When I can log into Duskwood and by full stacks of Frost Wyrm flasks for 200g or Mojo flask stacks for 300g, it's not even worth my time to farm/buy herbs to make my own.
Basil Berntsen Apr 22nd 2010 9:59AM
Frost lotus are cheaper than frozen orbs on many servers- this is because they greatly increased the drop rate. My suggestion is to take a close look at your costs, and instead of farming for the mats, buy them.
Simine May 12th 2010 8:59PM
I have a couple 80's on Duskwood. I don't know if it was just the particular server or not but six months ago there were really no flasks/elixirs that were profitable. Sure they sold, but you made as much or more just from selling the herbs.
Maybe other servers are different.

well nice guide but most things are know your customer and your server i dont bother making the flask to sell just personal use. well if on a tuesday or friday/ sat nite and everyones bought ALL the flask i put up 4 of flask of rage/SP/MP5/health for 70 gold some sell but usually get undercut back down.
I used to make bank by selling potion of speed and the potion of agility. i put them up w/ a 24 hr time and in various lots of 1/2/5/10/ and 20 and put LOTS up like the wall of potions! sometimes i get undercut and sometimes not but theres was only 5 of us selling the pots

This is my first time reading, and it must said that the guide is quite comprehensive. I shall continue to follow your posts, because your name is Basil Berntsen. Basil Berntsen is an awesome name.

Oh yeah? You try going through high school with it :P

Does anyone have tips on making money with Alchemy BEFORE 450? My lil' priest is lvl 50 all alone on a server, and I like having epic flight as soon as possible... I know the odds of making money at Alchemy level 250 are slim, but something has to sell, right?
Hih Apr 22nd 2010 4:10AM
When leveling 3 of my alts with alchemy (what can I say, transmute spec is awesome), I found that I probably broke even after buying the mats and making the stuff. While it would probably take you a long time to get epic flight from level 250 alchemy, it's probably doable. Take a look at your server's AH and see what potions/elixirs sell for a good profit and make some. We're not mind readers and we don't know your server's economy.
Jen Apr 22nd 2010 4:26AM
I'm not expecting mind reading, but I've tried selling everything I made (except mana pots which I use for myself) and nothing sold. I'm not expecting to make 5k from this (I already have 2.5-3k saved up), but I'd like to make *something*.
I was hoping for tips like "go to to Tanaris and learn the transmute patterns" (I had no idea they existed until a few days ago, I thought I needed to learn from a trainer) or "there's this obscure drop for a potion used by X". I don't quest much so I've missed all non-trainer stuff.
Basil Berntsen Apr 22nd 2010 9:56AM
Before 450, just install lilsparky's workshop and auctioneer. It will tell you whether any of the recipes you have are profitable. You won't make huge amounts, however. I had limited success making money with alchemy before I hit the skill cap.
