Breakfast Topic: 101 things to do before the world dies

Then Slorkuz chimed in with the following:
SlorkuzQuote:
The old world is changing forever. Let's compile a list of things to do before the end.
1) Play through all the starter zones, to give some idea if each race's lore.

Visit the Shimmering Flats!
We already know that Thousand Needles is going to be mostly underwater in Cataclysm, but it was another nudge to the realization that the world we know is going bye-bye forever. Right now, my personal "bucket list" includes doing the dungeon set 2 quest line, but I'd love to hear from other players on how they're approaching the "end of the world."

I rolled a horde about a month ago just to give the horde side a quick look. It's a completely different game. I've never met so many friendly people in my entire life. O_o

From one Aaron to another ((My name is Aaron))
Join us. I had the same experience switching from Ally to Horde.

I've leveled evey class in the game twice (10hord/10alliance) picking a main is a bitch. Come cata I'll have a real delema cause Dang too many good choices. I think I could really go for the insane title on my main(s)

I sort of feel the same way about the Horde. I have tried to level one a few times but hit a roadblock when I realized that I really just don't like the Lore/Culture/Setting it is based on (especially the Forsaken now). To each their own of course. The only one I have consistently liked are the Tauren. I have always said the Alliance should trade the Gnomes to the Horde for the Taruen. :)
So after reading the recent Wow.com article about the history of the Tauren I really wanted to see all their lore before Cataclysm changes it all. So I rolled a Tauren Shaman and am working my way through all the cow quests, really reading the text and talking to all the NPCs. It has been a LOT of fun. I don't know how long it will last past the Tauren areas, but hopefully my love for Cow Culture will help me push through. I would really like to see the BC and LK settings from the other side too.
Good luck.

@Tim
You must be bizzaro Tim. Or am I bizzaro Tim?
I only play horde for the most part but have rolled a pally, trying to only level through questing. It is fun seeing the other side.

Tauren seem the coolest. Once you get to Stonetalon and move onto Thousand Needles it's all gravy. Plus the questlines there have some pretty choice pieces of lore going on.
trexxen Apr 23rd 2010 4:53PM
If you enjoy lore, I would agree to go Tauren, but - and this is just my personal opinion, I'm sure others disagree - I feel that Mulgore is probably one of the most annoying areas in the game. It's large, slow to get around, and generally easy to get lost in. If you already know your Tauren lore well enough, I actually suggest Blood Elf. Not only is their starting area interesting and streamlined, now that BC is over and they're no longer holding a naaru hostage, the Blood Elves are probably - counting the race as a whole, mind, rather than just certain people - the easiest to relate to and feel sympathetic for.
And I agree the person that said to stay out of the Forsaken quests, they're all really horrendous - personally, I like to think that a lot of the Horde is more like, say, Thrall or even Cairne than Sylvanas. Heck, Vol'Jin's a good guy too minus the cannibalism thing. And Lor'themar (and the other belfs to an extent) were just being used by Kael'thas, they thought what they were doing was right until they found out what it really was. The Forsaken are the only horde race that seems actually "evil".
(Although Blood Elves are my favorite race. =P)
Vaeku Apr 23rd 2010 5:40PM
You know what's funny?
My two favorite races in the game are Draenei and Forsaken. You couldn't pick two races that are farther apart on the morality/alignment scale.
Although I've found that I also really like the blood elf storyline/questing areas, so right now I'm leveling a blood elf hunter, and will go level in Kalimdor while my forsaken warlock levels in EK.

Exalted with some Old world factions, kill rag/c'thun/nefar before they get removed
Jiffah Apr 23rd 2010 10:52AM
As far as I know, they are not removing the Blackrock mountain instances and raids, they are adding, I believe, 2 new ones, but BRD, LBRS,UBRS, MC and BWL are not supposed to get nuked. In fact, I hope they don't 'erase' any old world. Ragnaros being in Hyjal doesn't mean MC is gone, there's 3 Kael Thas, 2 Anub'arak, etc.
But Lorewise, they might take out Stratholme & Scholomance (I'm crying inside, but Bolvar won't let Lordearon like that), Wailing Caverns( I'll miss those crazy Snake-form druids, but apparently the corruption has been cleansed for good), Gnomerragan is being retaken (only the surface? perhaps leave it as RFC is to Orgrimmar?)...and If they were really into it, they might upgrade/update Blackfathom Deeps (Twilight's hammer), Uldaman( retconning Titan-lore to reflect Ulduar and Uldum?), Mauraudon (All that water is actually from there, so if it leaks out and heal Desolace, what's left in Maraudon? Mud-adon? we'll see). It's all I can think of at the moment...

Get World Explorer, for one thing. To make sure I see all the zones as they are now. And maybe collect some old epics.
Aaron Apr 23rd 2010 8:34AM
Did some minor flooding already occur in Thousand Needles or has it just been that long since I've been on that side of the zone?! There was a good sized pond yesterday when I was running to gadget. Now, I must admit I haven't been over there in a about 6 months, but I don't for the life of me remember that pond being there. =/
Belthazar Apr 23rd 2010 8:42AM
That pond has always been there.
Aaron Apr 23rd 2010 8:44AM
Yeah I just looked it up on mapwow. For some reason I thought I was much farther west than I actually was. It's funny that I have my explorer title, but don't for the life of me remember that little area and I lapped it a million times leveling mining. HAHA. It's a big game after all. =P

Although it's painfully unoriginal and has been said many times, I must say again that everyone should make an effort to find Mankrik's wife. This is one of the most famous quests in all of WoW, and what are the odds it'll still be around with the Barrens changing more drastically than pretty much any other zone?
And though I don't know how much the Thandol Span area will change, I would also suggest everyone try and find Sully Balloo's letter. Unlike Mankrik's wife, this is the quest line that a lot of people *still* don't know about, but it really is quite epic and touching.
Fletcher Apr 23rd 2010 9:43AM
I did Sully Balloo's letter the other day, while grinding IF rep on my gnome. Goodbye robot chicken, hello giant sheep! I'm still annoyed that apparently the only place to find the proper stone for that dwarf was in a cave full of yetis. You'd think there's stones all over the place.

I've been working on all the Shimmering Flats quests, and it's incredibly annoying as far as quest hubs go, reminding me of all the things that were wrong with the Old World design:
-Consecutive quests that send you to different zones all over the world (Ex. Go talk to this guy in Booty Bay. He tells you to talk to deliver something to a guy in Ratchet. He asks you to kill a few mobs in the Badlands.)
-Ridiculous quest difficulty curves (I.e. The first quest a guy gives you is level 30. The second is 33. The next one is 37. It might be days before you can return to follow-up on the quest he just gave you.)
-Boring tasks. Many of their quests are just variants on "Kill X number of Y mob, or pick up Z number of drops from said mob."
As interesting as the zone is, it makes me anxious for Cataclysm to arrive. As much as Blizzard has learned about what works and what doesn't in regards to zone/quest design, it'll be a welcome change to avoid such silliness.
Abbadon Apr 23rd 2010 10:11AM
I concur...
I finished up Loremaster recently and actually completed it in the flats. These quests (along with the Linken chain) were vary frustrating having to run all over the place to get credit for a single quest.
I am so thankful for the progress Blizz has made in quest design.
Smoe Apr 26th 2010 7:15PM
True, it's a lot of work just for one quest, but isn't that more realistic? There has to be a reason for a lvl 60 to pay you to do something in a lvl 30 zone. If he's already at the zone, he could easily do it himself instead of waiting for some adventurer to come along. It would seem more viable for the lvl 60 to pay you to travel and deliver a message for him or at least go out of your way to get to the the zone and kill the mobs. Otherwise, the quest giver would seem way too lazy if he could both easily and quickly do the job, yet pay you to do it instead.

I'm leveling one last Horde character, a troll rogue in WoW.com's guild. I've only leveled one Horde through old Azeroth before (excluding the DK that got to skip old Azeroth). On the Alliance side, I've already leveled at least 4 characters through it, one very recent, so I'm set there.
The change in power in the Horde is one of the things that excite me the most about Cataclysm, so leveling this rogue through Horde quests is a high priority to me.
I'm pretty satisfied with everything else though. I've already done all the achievements and quest lines that I cared about. I got to run BWL about a week ago with my DK. Did MC and ZG one last time with my pally a month or so ago.
