If you wait until 80 to begin leveling up your Enchanting then you might be right, you don't NEED to pair it with a profession that allows you to craft items that you can DE for mats. (And of course if you have piles of gold from other toons and you are leveling Enchanting on an alt, then none of this really matters.) But if you started with Enchanting at level 5, as I did, then something like Tailoring is essential. Green drops and quest rewards were not even close to being adequate! I DE'd every single green/blue weapon/armor item that I didn't equip until I hit level 65. My Enchanting always lagged behind Tailoring up to that point when I hit the Moonshroud CD at 440. Enchanting maxed out for me about the time I reached 70, Tailoring shortly afterward. Enchanting skill advancement is always strictly limited by the availability of mats. When leveling Enchanting at low character levels, Tailoring has been a perfect companion profession for precisely the reasons stated in this article. But of course if you're not a cloth wearer, then it has limited utility. I'd like to see a new gathering profession aimed squarely at obtaining Enchanting mats. While Enchanting would maintain the ability to DE green (and better) items, the new gathering profession would enable anyone with this profession (even if they did not also have Enchanting) to gather nodes that directly provide some raw material (analogous to ores and herbs) that could be turned into Enchanting mats.
