Cataclysm badge and PvP point changes

Blizzard just released a lengthy statement on Cataclysm badges and PvP point changes. Badges are going away in Cataclysm. Instead, everything will be point based for both PvE and PvP gear. There will be four types of points earned (two PvE and two PvP):
- Hero Points, Low tier PvE gear
- Valor Points, High tier PvE gear
- Honor Points, Low tier PvP gear
- Conquest Points, High tier PvP gear
Hero points are like the current Emblems of Triumph. Valor Points are like Emblems of Frost, and have a cap on how many you can get each week. Honor Points are like the current Honor Points, and Conquest Points are like the current Arena Points. There will be maximum caps on each sets of points.
Personal ratings will be removed from almost all items, including weapons.

Cataclysm Badge and PvP Point ChangesWe're continuing to refine the badge/emblem and PvP point systems in Cataclysm and we'd like to share some of those changes with you today. Please enjoy!
Our primary goal when approaching badges in Cataclysm is to address a lot of the confusion that comes with these currency systems. To that end we're changing badges to a more straightforward point system, similar to the ones we've used for a while for Arenas and Battlegrounds. There will be a total of four types of points you can earn in Cataclysm (two for PvE and two for PvP), and these will remain the same even as we introduce new content.
Here's the breakdown:
PvE
PvP
As noted for Conquest points, the Rated Battlegrounds and Arenas will be sharing this same point type. Because of that, it will in fact be possible to get the best PvP items without setting foot in Arena; however, more powerful armor and weapons will of course require more Conquest points, so players who win their matches more often will still gear up faster. We're removing personal rating requirements on almost all items; they're definitely removed for weapons. We might offer a few items to the absolute best players based on personal rating, largely as cosmetic or 'bragging rights' type items. And you'll have the option of purchasing the previous season's gear with the more readily available Honor points.
We do plan to have a way to convert Honor points (PvP) into Hero points (PvE), and vice versa, at a loss. The conversions will be possible, but it won't be a 1:1 rate, and you'll have fewer points after the conversion process. We won't allow the higher tiers to be exchanged for each other, however.
To explain the reasoning for the weekly cap on points for the higher tiers, this is to provide flexibility in how players choose to earn the points without feeling like they have to do all of the content as often as it is available. If your Valor income from raiding is sufficient, you may not feel the need to run Dungeon Finder every night, or perhaps even at all. Likewise, a PvP player could choose to participate in a lot of Rated Battlegrounds but no Arenas, or focus on both, and still be able to earn the points they want.
We realize that with any changes to progression pathways there are going to be questions. We're eagerly awaiting any that we may have left unanswered. To the comments!

PvE
- Hero Points -- Low-tier, easier-to-get PVE points. Maximum cap to how many you can own, but no cap to how quickly you can earn them. Earned from most dungeons. (most like the current Emblem of Triumph)
- Valor Points -- High-tier, harder-to-get PvE points. Maximum cap to how many you can own, as well as a cap to how many you can earn per week. Earned from Dungeon Finder daily Heroic and from raids. (most like the current Emblem of Frost)
PvP
- Honor Points -- Low-tier, easier-to-get PVP points. There will be a maximum cap to how many you can own, but no cap to how quickly you can earn them. Earned from most PvP activities.
- Conquest Points -- High-tier, harder-to-get PvP points. There will be a maximum cap to how many you can own, and a cap to how many you can earn per week. Earned from winning Rated Battlegrounds or Arenas. (currently called Arena Points)

M,mmmmmm Weapons, finally a chance to get some goodies without having an arena rating. Still have to be earned but at least it will be achievable.
Very happy back to what it was in BC.

This kind of alleviates some of the concerns I had about the changes to 10 vs 25 man raiding. I'm an avid 10man raider and was slightly concerned with the announcement of the shared lockout that I was going to lose the chance to earn extra badges. I thought the lower ratio of loot:players was fair, but the badge thing bothered me.
However, it seems like the way it's going to work is that 10man raiders are just going to have to run more daily heroics than their 25man counterparts in order to keep up with the badge race. This to me seems very fair - 10mans do take less time to organise and set up (and are, for example, much more likely to happen in an impromptu, "holy crap, 10 people on at the same time - lets finish that ICC run" way). They also require less effort and planning in terms of loot rules, DKP systems etc. than most 25 mans. In cataclysm, it seems that the offset for this time in terms of badges is that 10 man raiders we will have to spend more time grinding the Cataclysm equivalent of Heroic Oculus and scrabbling about trying to get enough done to hit the cap each week while the 25man raiders lounge about in Org talking crap on /trade or playing BGs.

Sounds like arena popularity will decrease a lot.
Personally I suck at arena, but I think it's one of the best things in WoW. It's nice to have even one place where skill means more than gear and the only thing you can blame for losing is yourself. I'm not saying PVE content or battlegrounds are easy, but arena is always the most difficult and non-scripted aspect of the game.
I like the new system, but I believe arena should still have unique rewards based on team rating. Maby something that isn't directly advantage over other players, but for example mounts and other cosmetic rewards.

Arena is already one of the least popular and controversial aspects of the game, and Blizzard has repeatedly expressed reservations about the headaches arena causes given the relatively low number of players who enjoy it. Given that this is a MMO, I suspect they've made a design decision to focus pvp on the much more MMO oriented, and popular, bgs, and move away from arena altogether.

The only thing I'm kinda wary of is when the new tiers are released and the Valor and Conquest points are downgraded to Hero and Honor points. Is Blizz gonna lower the Valor gear from one tier down to Hero when a new tier is launched?
cyco23 Apr 27th 2010 1:28AM
I canceled back in February. Keep trying to bring people down, you'll find friends eventually.
kia Apr 27th 2010 1:31AM
Huh?
If you canceled your account in February... and it's nearly May... why are you on a WoW blog? And why do you care about a game you won't even be playing?
Lars Petersson Apr 27th 2010 6:27AM
I get the feeling this was meant as a semi-sarcastic reply to someone...
DAIGAN Apr 27th 2010 2:00AM
WHat is going to happen to those of us who have badges? WIll they be converted? I got stuck with a bunch of unspendable crap when Wrath hit.
Narshe Apr 27th 2010 2:05AM
They will prolly be useless like the old TBC badges.
timsvg3 Apr 27th 2010 1:46AM
To all the people complaining about the weekly cap on the high end points, its no different than it is now. Theres effectively a cap on how many frost badges you can earn each week, since there are only so many bosses in ICC/VOA/Daily Randoms. This just makes it so you raiders don't have to bother with us lowly heroic runners to get your badges every day.
neminem Apr 27th 2010 2:09AM
Aaaah. I was really worried when I read this, having never PvP'd, and thus, not knowing how the PvP gear system works, that if you didn't get enough points to buy some piece of "valor"-level gear you wanted before the next update, you'd lose all your progress as all those points were devalued. But if the gear was likewise devalued, which would make sense, then I really can't see any major problem with this system. Other than I'm not entirely sure why there's a maximum? I do like the cap per week on Valors, though, as someone who just couldn't get up the energy to do dailies once I'd gotten the couple really essential frost upgrades, even though there were still useful upgrades to purchase.
Leo Apr 27th 2010 2:27AM
Hey the only thing I dont like about this is that you probably wont have that extra honor or triumph to buy gems, or BOE's to sell on the AH. What do you think?
Lars Petersson Apr 27th 2010 6:29AM
It sounds to me like you just do what you do now. Run and extra couple of randoms and get the gems from there.
Unless I missed it, there isn't going to be a cap on how many Triumphs you can get, only how many you can stockpile...
Blondies Apr 27th 2010 2:37AM
If you earn just a few Valor Points, not enough to buy anything, and the they switch to the next tier of raiding, your points wont be useless. I like it.
Muse Apr 27th 2010 3:41AM
...okay, what did Blizzard put in the water? The community is actually reacting over-all positive to this. And giving constructive feedback.
Updawg Apr 27th 2010 3:43AM
Why do they keep chaning it -.-
just go back to the way vanilla had it, make the raids incredibly hard, but have them drop tons of loot.
Necrolord_Bob Apr 27th 2010 8:30AM
Because they are trying to make it so everyone gets a shot at the endgame, not just hardcore raiders. Otherwise it's like "Join us in the fight against Deathwing, but unless you can put together a 40 man raid group who can co-ordinate perfectly, you probably will never even know what he looks like!"
The game is supposed to be fun for everyone, and the storyline is for everyone, not just those who can put their time an effort into hardcore raiding.
Obnauticus Apr 27th 2010 9:03AM
Tons of loot? What version of classic were you playing? I remember maybe three pieces would drop per boss for forty people.
Socialcockroach Apr 27th 2010 10:39AM
Rofl! A ton of loot?! The ONLY people who ever got a "ton of loot" were the tanks because they only had two people to compete with and guilds usually saw the tanks as the only true "must gear" roll. Every one else squabled over scraps. I cannot tell you the amount of times I ran MC, ZG, BWL, or AQ with out getting anything but a repair bill and a tiny bit of dkp.
Gearing up to FOR EVER in vanilla. Back then, having all epic items was an amazing achievement. I remember when I got my benediction I felt uber leet even though I still had a couple slots filled with blues.
