When leveling weapons skills, I fast swing speed is good, yes. But I prefer low dps since I'm not aware of any mobs that you can smack forever that still gives skill ups anymore. So I usually go to the AH and buy some gray level 6 weapon for a couple silver.

The white weapons (and to a greater extent, armor) are there for flavor and to make sets based on looks instead of armor. There's actually some pretty cool looking armor sets that are white quality sold from vendors.
If only we had an appearance tab...
