Breakfast Topic: The cult of Warcraft
In some ways, WoW is like a cult. We still need an agreed-upon secret handshake or sign, but we already have our own language. I distinctly remember playing a tabletop RPG with friends before my WoW days; we were sitting around chatting, and I realized that I had no idea what anyone was saying. The conversation was filled with DPS, HoTs, BRD, UBRS, tank and spank, kiting, honor kills. It was a different language; I couldn't follow it at all.
I suddenly realized, "Dear god, this must be what it feels like to be a non-gamer."
Of course, now I can slip into the cult-like language of WoW with the best of them, and it's a slippery slope. It sneaks into your brain in insidious ways and slips out at the oddest times. I once emailed a client about a project they wanted me on and accidentally signed it "Frostheim." That one took some explaining.
I have a friend who started dating a woman with two girls. One day she said, "I'm taking the girls up for their bath." He responded, "Honey, what level do the girls have to be before they can take a bath on their own?"
Have you ever accidentally slipped up and used WoW-speak in your everyday conversation? Did it identify you at once as a member of the cult of WoW or just confuse people?

This isn't related to the breakfast topic but I think you'll find it interesting. This morning during server maintenance I grew very bored and was looking for stuff to do since insomnia was preventing me from just sleeping, at some point I decided I wanted to find out how many pages wow.com has. Well I tried www.wow.com/page/1000 and got some results from 2008. Then I tried www.wow.com/page/3000 and got a blank page, naturally the next step was page 2000 and BAM! Right there was the very first post of wowinsider.com
Exactly 2000 pages of content is a pretty big milestone for a website, or since you get 10 articles to a page unknowingly you just had your 20,000th article (to be exact I believe 15 Minutes of Fame: Olympic swimmer Megan Jendrick was that article).
I have to say though, you've come a long way in terms of quality, In your first 10 articles there's a section called “Dear Stabby” where you can ask a rogue called 'stabstab' questions, an article on nude texture files (and how to get them) and another article about the exciting prospect of 'warlock bags for shards'
Anyway congratulations on the 20,000 articles, here's to the next 20,000.

Thank you for this!!
Made my lunch hour very interesting :D
And I gotta say, after looking at a few pages of what it all was like back 3-4 years ago, I am amazed at how the game itself has changed, how topics of interest have evolved.
This:
http://www.wow.com/2006/10/08/the-seven-wonders-of-wow/
Is awesome. Would make an excellent breakfast topic discussion now, especcially since the whole world (of warcraft) is about to be remade...
So how about it? 7 wonders of the world (of warcraft)?

Indeed, congrats WoWInsider!
Mark Asher and Josh Owens... where did they go?
Noselacri Apr 28th 2010 9:06AM
Wow, it's seriously been 2000 pages? That's a HUGE milestone.
Congrats wowinsider/wow.com!!!
On another note: Didn't we just discuss WoWSpeak leaking into our everyday lives...about a week ago?

I'm not sure if wowinsider's ever done a retrospective look at their site (I remember they did look back on the highlights of the year in January) but if they haven't on a different occasion such as an anniversary then 20,000 posts might be a good time to look back on past writers, what they're doing now, old features they no longer use, etc.

Look like http://www.wow.com/2005/11/23/welcome-to-wowinsider/ was the first post :)

Gratz WoWInsider/wow.com! Looking back at those old articles though left me with a suggestion .. perhaps you should start tagging articles somehow with the patch version of the game that was current when it was posted, similar to wowhead comments? Just an idea...

"Right there was the very FIRST post of wowinsider.com"
I see what you did there. ;)
Just kidding. On a serious note, this is an awesome find. Now I have something to do when I should be working today. :D

"In the new instance of the upcoming 1.9 patch, there's apparently a hammer called the Blessed Qiraji War Hammer with a DPS rating of 130. When I saw this a tidbit about a week ago, I almost fell out of my chair. Unfortunately, Blizz has stated that the obscenely high DPS on the hammer is a bug and the 1.9 patch will ship with the Blessed Qiraji War Hammer having a more normal DPS."
Nice, after lunch break :) Thank you!

I haven't done it (at least not enough to get weird looks), but a friend of mine had it happen at work. She's a paralegal, and after some good news regarding a case that was in progress, she exclaimed "Woot!" which received some rather odd looks.
Then again, I guess I have gotten a few odd looks when you simply say, "Grats!" to people. For some reason there's a difference in "grats" vs. "congrats".

I yelled "Lok'tar Ogar" to a friend across the library at school today. If that doesn't get you weird looks, nothing will.

Anything awesome is now "epic" or "uber". Anything that doesn't go right is "fail".
People think I'm using a cool new phrase. They like it. Wowspeak trendsetting ftw.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but wasn't w00t from Teen Girl Squad(homestarrunner.com) initially, not WoW?
Eternauta Apr 28th 2010 11:19AM
I usually say "lol" in front of my family when somebody says something funny.
Of course none of them understands, and look at me awkwardly for a moment.
Wowcoholic Apr 28th 2010 11:20AM
bah, wikipedia was no help on w00t.....
Aloix Apr 28th 2010 3:32PM
urban dictionary has some stuff on the origins of woot, not much in additional info than the wikipedia entry though.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=woot
Googling for woot origin leads to mostly deadish ends, it is of course somewhat mysterious.

It may be from there, however my friend never viewed homestarrunner, and WoW was her first (and only) MMO. Definitely more of a gamer community thing as far as she's ever known.
...and the legal community isn't very well known for being avid MMO players.

when my wife watched our car hit the 100k mile marker, she said the first thing that poped in her head was, "Ding"
MusedMoose Apr 28th 2010 6:57PM
Yeah, I said "Ding!" and patted my car on the steering wheel when it hit 30K miles.
No achievement, though - what's up with that?

I told the boss that I was working on a project which wouldn't bring us in any money but would give us a decent rep gain from the customer; he thought I coined the phrase on my own and now he's adopted it.
