Rich Maloy's Big Crits web series makes its debut
And now, at last, Big Crits has just released its premiere episode, with a second following closely behind later this week. Those who wish to follow the exploits of the Big Crits crew can check out the first episode above or on bigcrits.com, where new episodes should appear once a week."I'm producing a new web series that will be the Real World (of Warcraft). The guild and the show are called Big Crits. It's a reality series about the interaction of people in an end-game raiding guild. The tagline is: Real people conquering a virtual world.
The vision is simple: show how people from all walks of life work together to accomplish great things online."

Suzu here. Before anyone asks about it, no, it *doesn't* make that much more sense in context.
Suzushiro Apr 28th 2010 11:18AM
(The one part you're all going to WTF at, I mean, not the show as a whole.)
Burb Apr 28th 2010 11:34AM
Suzu - that part never gets old. =D
Malkavos Apr 28th 2010 12:40PM
HOW DO YOU KNOW SO MUCH ABOUT DRAGONS?
Malkeinu Apr 28th 2010 11:20AM
Nicely done. It will be interesting to see where this goes. Although, I'm already loving the concept. Keep it up!

Really enjoyed that. I only play in a 10m guild where we have had virtually the same people for 2 years so it will be interesting to see the politics play out.
And no Suzu it really doesnt :P

So what episode will be the fist fight? Will Puck get kicked out of the house again? Does the RV run over any gnomes? And who is the guild slut? (Bet she's a BE warlock). Without these things it just won't be reality programming.
saragh Apr 28th 2010 11:32AM
I'm pretty sure Suzu is the guild slut. She's pretty hot.
Suzushiro Apr 28th 2010 2:19PM
I HAVE A PENIS, GODDAMNIT

I apologize for being a sexist. Men can be sluts too. I still hold that it will be the Be though.

I watched the whole thing, and I just don't get the point of this. The addition of the real-world perspectives of in-game players is interesting, but there's little context to the story, and it's mostly just minute after minute of fight videos, none of which approach the standards of videos normally seen on WoW.com, WarcraftMovies, etc. It's not a show in the present format - it's just fight videos with voiceover.
It would probably also help if the GM/creator didn't spend so much time trying to sound cool. The whole "loved and feared" thing smacked of someone living out his leadership fantasies from his Mom's basement.

Self righteous troll missed the bus and is standing at the station confused.
"Omg this doesn't conform to what I recognize as a show. Time to make a fool of myself!"
Suzushiro Apr 28th 2010 12:18PM
Don't worry, episode 2 cuts down on the "Stoney trying to be more badass than he actually is" by 80%.
Malkavos Apr 28th 2010 12:48PM
Agreed. Some exposition would've been great to set up the storyline instead of just jumping into the raid footage and mentioning details of the show and the formation of the raid group in passing. We heard a couple of people make remarks about the "added social dynamics", but we never really got a clear introduction -- who are these people, how did this start, why are we filming this?
The credits on either side are really well put together, and the show as a whole seems to have some nice production going on, but you're just thrown into the mix without quite knowing how you got there.
And yeah, Rich's video clips sound a lil bit rehearsed and a whole lot cheesy.

I think the video did a fairly decent job of condensing an entire 3-4 hour raid night into a mere 8 minutes. While I do agree that it lacked in narrative, I don't really think it *should* have narrative at this point - this is only the Introduction episode. If you've watched any reality TV, you know that narrative will introduce itself as you go along in the form of drama and personality conflicts.
As long as they don't fabricate the drama for narrative's sake, this could be very interesting to keep up with. Forced drama, however, is very easy to pick up on and would end up with me changing the proverbial channel, if you will.

I think I was hoping it would make sense to someone who doesn't raid or (even better) play wow. I realize that the drama and narrative will come in time, but it would have been nice to see setting up the 'experiment' instead of just the first couple of runs. The formation of the group, who these people are.
I kind of understood what as going on because I have seen those fights before, but if I were to get my wife to watch this (and she has played a fair amount of WoW,) she wouldn't have a clue what she was even watching.
Personally, I feel that in its current form this will have little impact. It seems like the target audience is raiders, who already experience the drama of wipes and loot first hand. Why would they be interested in this? I feel like it needs to expand to cover a potential audience who isn't as familiar with 'calling a raid' or even a 'wipe' or 'loot'
This is all just my opinion thought, which is irrelevant.

This is so horribly unstructured. I have no idea wtf is going on. I'm confused as to why this is being released as something for the public, rather than something reserved for this guild to view, which seems to be what it'd be better suited as.
Dude Apr 28th 2010 12:02PM
Hahahaha, good stuff.
Stonebaby is an excact replica of the boss in "The Office" - totally inflated ego which you're just waiting for to explode in a good old time of fun, fun, fun! The whole Machiavelli macho know-it-all thing is really well acted!
The clip is really like "The office" with wow related material - good stuff, keep it coming.
Draul Apr 28th 2010 12:37PM
Haha, he reminds me more of Dwight.

I think it shows that Rich has a good sense of humor about himself. As the producer, he could have the show edited to make himself look like the most competent player in the guild, and the best guild leader ever, but instead, he allows people to see some of the nerdier aspects of his own personality. It's tough making videos of yourself talking about an MMO without coming across as a huge nerd; try it yourself if you don't believe me.
The first episode is very disjointed and chaotic, but we were trying to cram so much into it, and introduce people to the featured raiders, without going over 10 minutes of show time. In the 2nd episode, you can see more of a story developing, and more personalities emerging. Also, if the featured raiders weren't all lazy, there would be bios on the website already.
