AddOn Spotlight: NeedToKnow

In a previous Addon Spotlight, I reviewed Sexycooldown, a timeline-style buff/debuff/cooldown timer that brings with it functionality and an awesome look and feel. This week, I wanted to showcase another of my new favorite addons that performs certain tasks similar Sexycooldown/ForteXorcist, but does so in a different style. A few emails that I have received have asked for a bar-style cooldown and debuff tracker. Well, here is your answer: NeedToKnow. I've tried my absolute best to avoid a dumb joke about "you're on a need-to-know basis," but you do need to know about NeedToKnow! NeedToKnow.
If you're playing the unofficial AddOn Spotlight drinking game (drink responsibly, kids), you've probably already had too much. Let's make it another. NeedToKnow is a comprehensive buff/debuff/cooldown/internal cooldown tracker that functions through user created bars and parameters. Up-front disclosure -- a gnome recommended this addon to me. I don't usually deal with gnomes, as the members of my particular faction want them a lot less alive then they currently are. But all gnomes aren't that bad, I guess, as this particular gnome gave me a pretty good suggestion.
NeedToKnow (NTK) operates through user-created bars that appear on designated areas of the screen when the named buff/debuff/effect occurs in the game world. The user creates bars that then can be populated with variables and the name of the spells or abilities the player wishes to track. Much like PowerAuras, there is a setting for only buffs or debuffs cast or created by you, allowing for a simple setup of just your cooldowns and timers to watch. On the other hand, NTK allows you to track boss buffs and debuffs as well, so you have quick access to the types of abilities already present on boss fights. Much like Sexycooldown, a set of bars could be added that display the debuffs present on the boss, allowing the player to gauge what abilities to use.

In a couple of weeks, I'll be doing something big with Power Auras, which you will read about below. Part of the reason I am recommending NTK is because I feel like it is a great stepping stone and a learning environment for Power Auras. I do not want people to think that I am trying to put down my own addon suggestion, but so many people are intimidated by Power Auras, and something like NTK might help them get into the habit and the mindset of tracking name abilities, etc.

Internal cooldowns for trinket procs are a useful bit of information to have. These cooldowns exist on many trinkets in Wrath, and they are easy to set up using NTK. Internal cooldowns reference the time before a trinket or ability that has procced can proc again. First, create two bars with NTK; one bar will be used for the duration of the self-buff that the trinket or proc gives, and the second for the internal cooldown of the trinket or ability. Select the "internal cooldown" option for the bar's display, and enter the name of the buff that you want to track. The best resource for figuring out the precise name of the buff given is Wowhead, as sometimes the buff given is not the same name as the trinket that procs said buff. Remember that NTK needs exact spelling and capitalization, so doublecheck the name and your work!

How about some tips for this simple yet powerful addon?
- Use NeedToKnow for short-duration buffs. This is my favorite use for it. I tried out NTK on tracking my judgments as well as Art of War. The setup was easy and worked perfectly.
- NeedToKnow has some awesome configuration and easy-to-use appearance options. Play around with colors to give each of your bar sets an eye-catching, situationally relevant hue. My Judgement of Light, for instance, is yellow, and Judgement of Wisdom is blue.
- You can track multiple buffs or debuffs with one bar using a comma to separate each named buff. Remember to make sure everything is spelled correctly and has the proper capitalization.
- Spell IDs work in lieu of names. If you know the Spell ID, use that instead.
- NTK has no adverse affect on my system, and AddOn Profiler has it running really light. You know how much I appreciate light addons.
- Use the slash commands /ntk or /needtoknow to lock and unlock the addon. Bars will only display for abilities and tracking when the addon is locked.
With NeedToKnow, you get a robust yet simple package of bar-style cooldown, buff and debuff trackers. Like most addons of this kind, there is a little bit of a setup process. Once it is all in place, however, you're golden. Frankly, I like this setup procedure. This gives you the chance to rummage through your buffs and equipment to find out what information you truly need on your screen, instead of just having every buff or debuff up on the screen in all corners. Tinker, friends, and you will find in NTK a perfect complement to any user interface.

Power Auras needs you (to win this contest!)
Power Auras is a big deal for many people. It's one of those addons that fundamentally changed the way I played World of Warcraft. This addon has an amazing following, so let's do something awesome utilizing that fan fervor.
Two weeks from today, I want to do a big spotlight on Power Auras. We have done a Power Auras spotlight in the past, but this time around we are going to get not only my insight into my favorite users for Power Auras, but the community's as well. And here's the best part -- when you submit an entry for our little Power Auras expose, it's your entry into winning a WoW TCG loot card! The powers that be have given me both a Tiny and Party G.R.E.N.A.D.E. cards, so two random contributors will get a card.
Here's the deal. Submit your favorite uses for Power Auras, including the actual code if you would like (it helps), before Friday, May 7, 2010. Sending in multiples doesn't get you a better chance -- just one entry per person. Let's see if we can pool lots of community resources together and make a really awesome repository of Power Auras for all the people our there who don't know how incredibly awesome this addon is.
Send your Power Auras ideas/submissions/code to mat@wow.com, with Power Auras in the subject. See you all next week!
Addons are what we do on Addon Spotlight. Are you a druid, hunter, rogue or a warrior? That was last week, simpleton. I have been using this swipe to be mean lately. I am truly sorry. And remember, Addon Spotlight is fueled by viewers like you, so if you have a mod you think we should take a look at, email Mat at mat@wow.com. Filed under: Add-Ons, AddOn Spotlight

Nice post. I have used ClassTimers for a while now and they work well. Has whitelists/blacklists, pet/target/player/etc. What is the reason why I would switch from that to NTK?
Tayla Apr 29th 2010 4:13PM
Truthfully, this is only for stuff you want to track, such as procs. On my rogue i have it set up to track Envenom, Deadly Poison, Hunger For Blood, Slice and Dice and ToT. This isn't a buff bar. This is more of a CD tracker, or a proc tracker, or something like that. It doesn't just track whatever, it only tracks specific things.
Eyhk Apr 29th 2010 4:18PM
The great thing about NeedToKnow that I liked is the way you specifically show ONLY the things you Need To Know. A lot of class timers have a lot of extra information that is more cluttered than I'd like it to be. Thanks to NeedToKnow, I'm managing my kittie dps and putting out numbers that are actually close to RAWR's theoretical highs in my gear.
The set-up-yourself part also forces you to know the intricacies of your class.
For example, in order to put out top dps as kittie, I have a split second to decide what abilities I want to use.
I need to know
1) How much time left on Savage Roar
2) How much time left on Rip
3) How much time left on Rake
4) How much time left on Mangle (Cat), Mangle (Bear), or Trauma
5) How much time left on proc internal cooldowns
6) What procs are currently active for how long
7) Do I have Hysteria
Thanks to a mix of PowerAura and NeedToKnow, I can keep track of this relatively easily to make split second decisions on when to do what.

@Tayla, Eyhk
ClassTimer (which Toran just mentioned) does that same thing very neatly. It only watches buffs, debuffs, and procs specific to your class, or custom ones (like from weapons or other classes). They can each be turned on and off. ClassTimer only tracks specific things as well; it does not track every buff.
So basically what I'm saying is that you did not answer the question of why Toran or I would want to switch from ClassTimer to NeedToKnow.
Sorry if this comes off like a jerk, but can you or someone else please clarify the differences here for us?

> Sorry if this comes off like a jerk, but can you or someone else please clarify the

One difference is that ClassTimer's bars move so that stay in a compact group, while NeedToKnow's bars stay in place so that you always know where to look to find the time left on something specific.
Noah Apr 29th 2010 8:38PM
I suppose that's valid, although ClassTimer does have a "sticky" function where, if you wish, you can place each timer separately. Perhaps it isn't as effective as using NeedToKnow.
Kitjan Apr 30th 2010 1:08PM
- Visual Cast time (overlay an indicator, for example, when you need to start casting lava burst so it will land before the flame shock falls off)
- Auto shot timer
- Can track both stacks of Berserking if dual-weilding the enchant
- Bars don't ever move
- Can indicate the *lack* of a buff/debuff (by blinking the bar)
- Has to be set up from scratch; no per-class presets like ClassTimer
- Supports totems, temporary weapon imbues (Flametongue weapon), buffs, debuffs, internal cds, spell/item cds
Kitjan Apr 30th 2010 2:49PM
Also, being able to set bars to expire at the same speed so it's obvious which expires first, even if one is a 30 second timer and the other a 15 second timer. (Otherwise, a 30 second bar with 10 seconds left is shorter than a 15 second bar with 8 seconds left.) This is actually what got me using NeedToKnow in the first place, for feral druid.

YES I love this add-on!
On my Arms Warrior, I've been using it to track exclusive buffs/debuffs so I know if I need to use Thunder Clap, Demo Shout, or Sunder Armor. Even if there's a class that can bring a certain debuff, it's not guaranteed they'll make use of it, and NTK will show it. I also use it to track obvious stuff like Battle/Commanding Shout (which also list their equivalent exclusive buffs like BoM), Rend, and Execute/Slam procs.
On my Holy/Shadow Priest, I use it to track all the long-term buffs, short-term procs (Serendipity, Surge of Light, etc.), and DoTs. Nothing really exciting.
I've only got two complaints:
1) NOT ENOUGH BARS! :) Seriously though, I have no room for cooldowns, and I would love to add them.
2) Conflicts with setting party members as a Focus. I just hit the "Ignore" button (the Blizzard UI asks if I want to disable NTK) and try again. It always works the second time. Just a small annoyance, and probably not an easy fix.
Eyhk Apr 29th 2010 4:24PM
If you don't have enough bars, you should seriously look into using Power Auras.
Some times, you don't actually need a timed bar for some things, you just need to know if its on or off, or how many stacks. Power Aura is great for that.
For example, procs are things you can't really control. They usually proc as soon as the battle starts and then again after the internal CD is up. I use Power Auras to show me when each proc is up so I know when to use my cooldowns (or ask for one like Hysteria) for multiplicative benefits. When my screen starts lighting up, I know its time to go all out!
DArcMatter Apr 29th 2010 7:23PM
I recommend to you NeedToKnow's sister addon, TellMeWhen (http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/tellmewhen.aspx). TMW shows the relevant icon with its cooldown model, which I find more compact and unobtrusive than a timer bar. It allows for upwards of 8 groups of icon clusters to be displayed, so the ceiling is much higher than the bars limit in NTK.
Both NTK and TMW were both developed by the same developer, TMW should feel at home for you, since the menu system is almost the same as NTK's. It also shows when procs are available, such as revenge or overpower procs.

I'm not sure how Power Auras works, so I apologize if it does what I use NTK for (I'll be giving it a try when I have a chance, though).
I use NTK specifically for procs because I want to know how much time I have for using it. Like Surge of Light (Priest: instant no-cost flash heal), if I don't *have* to use it I'm going to let it sit until the last second or two before burning it on someone that's just a little low on HP, which in turn re-applies Serendipity - another proc I want to know the time for. The same goes for my Arms Warrior; if the Slam proc comes up, but Mortal Strike and the Execute proc are also up, I want to know which ones I can squeeze in without either the Slam or Execute procs fading. Seeing their times let's me juggle abilities appropriately.

The focus issue is a blizzard thing. No addon can set your focus- even if you tell it to.
Fluffywumpki of Kilrogg Apr 29th 2010 5:09PM
Power Auras can do all of that (it's a lot more robust in terms of what it can do, including supporting nested checks), but it does have a far steeper learning curve if you want to get the most out of it, as well as a much higher resource usage profile.
loop_not_defined Apr 29th 2010 5:45PM
@kingoomieiii
I'm using the default UI to set the tank as my Focus. However, if NTK is also running, the default UI gives me a warning message that there's conflicts with the addon NeedToKnow, and asks me if I want to Disable it or Ignore it. I just hit Ignore and do it again, always works the second time.
I'm pretty sure this isn't an issue caused by another addon. My PC just died two weeks ago and I've been playing on my wife's laptop, with only PetLeash running alongside it. I still get the error message.
Jack Mynock Apr 29th 2010 6:30PM
Actually, according to various addons authors, the focus bug is on Blizzard's end. I've run into it with numerous addons. I believe it only happens when you click on the unit frame and click 'set focus.' If you use the slash command, there's no issue. I'd just set it up in a macro and keybind it.
icepyro Apr 29th 2010 6:46PM
Power Auras is an on/off thing. It's either on or off. If you want to track when something is fully stacked, not fully stacked, procs you use immediately every time, etc., then PA is awesome.
If you are tracking anything where time is simply 'nice to have' and not required for your play style then PA is good.
If you tend to wait on your procs to maximize potential proc combinations (which it sounds as though you do) then NTK is probably a better choice (based on this preview) for that.
I fully intend to download NTK and play with it tonight as I can already think of some stuff I'd like to take off PA, but it's definitely not taking over completely.
icepyro Apr 29th 2010 6:59PM
After seeing what Fluffy said, I guess I haven't been using PA to its fullest potential. Obviously there are options I am overlooking. Still a bar timer is probably better for some things than a picture with a timer or however PA would handle such things.
@Jack: if all you are doing with the macro is /focus target, there is a keybinding for that which is not bugged. For other addons (I cannot speak for NTK), it really is about using the menu to set focus instead of the slash command or keybinding.
uncaringbear Apr 29th 2010 8:22PM
I don't understand why some people are saying Power Auras is only good for On/Off procs or states. PA has a timer option which makes it very well suited for tracking timed states. I used to use an addon very similar to NTK, but PA does everything that addon does. And while it's nice to have a pretty bar graphic, I'm more of an OmniCC/PA timer style person.
loop_not_defined Apr 29th 2010 10:09PM
I just realized I've been referring to "Slam procs" on my Arms Warrior. I meant Overpower procs. :P Been playing my Priest almost exclusively for awhile, now, hehe.
Sucks that it's a Blizzard issue. I'll probably just live with it, since I don't really have the room to spare for another keybind. Not a big issue.
