Warcraft movie update: Metzen says "still getting it together"

While we still have no exact answer to that, Chris Metzen gave us a small update on the film in an interview over at vg247 published yesterday. When asked if a considerable amount of time was being spent on the movie, Metzen replied, "I wouldn't say "considerable" at all just yet. We've been through a number of story meetings, and we're still kind of getting it together with Raimi and his team and jamming on themes that we want to chase."
Sadly, the interview didn't reveal many specifics, but Metzen responded favorably when asked if he was concerned about dissappointing Warcraft fans: "Nobody wants to screw it up: we all want to hit it hard and have it be something that is as resonant and canonical as it can be. But given what Warcraft is, with all these moving parts, we're going to have to take some liberties here and there. I'm under no illusions about that fact ... "
It's hard to draw any new or concrete conclusions from the interview, but it's good to see that the movie is still being talked about. WoW.com will keep you updated as we learn more.

Hopefully they'll take liberties like Jackson & Co. did with LOTR and not like the hacks behind "Dungeons and Dragons" (2000) did. Ugh... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0190374/
So pretty much, take all the liberties you want, as long as the end product is great.

"...take some liberties here and there..."
- Translation: "We're gonna ignore the lore completely and make a cheap LotR rip-off"

Thank you for the replies!
All I can hope now that Metzen will try to force it a bit into cannonic shape. Even if they did that, the film would be awsome. Warcraft as such has a fantastic setting , as mentioned also has many still ongoing plotlines they can pick , etc.
Also I hope that the Blizzard art/music department will be co-working with the film departments (or specificly the music will be done by the same people as for the game(s) ).
Come to think of it, this is something they dont event have to try to appel the audiance much - if the film will be of "blizzard quality/polish" than it will be a hit no matter what.

What "liberties" means is that people presume that thing that work in video games won't work in a movie (I say presume because up till now no one has ever tried doing anything but removing said things).
I think this is because the movie isn't seen as an extension to the lore. The books, comics etc are all seen as being extensions to the lore in some way or form so they normally tie into major events and tell those events form a specific perspective. The move however seems to be going to stand-alone route drawing from WoW-themes and possibly having a few WoW-cameos but not fully existing in the same WoW-lore.
So they'll try and make a movie which appeals to the greater audience and not a movie for the fan (although with millions of fans who presumable have the power to drag friends and family with them to go watch the movie, its a odd choose it examined from a purely capitalist stance). The movie will probably try to play to certain "lowest common denominator"-type themes i.e. dragons are cool lets throw a dragon in there.

This movie is never going to come out...

I get that feeling too. Every time I see any news posted, it's always about how they're still in the very early conceptualizing stages.

I remember people saying that about X-Men. And Spider-Man. And the Lord of the Rings movies.
Funny how that worked out.

The concept is a rather important part however. You can't even begin to create something without a clear and concise view on what you want to come out of it. It's obvious they don't have this clear cut view just yet, and it's rather self-explanatory as to why.
The world of Warcraft is an expansive universe. It has undergone many different storylines, undergone many different changes, and seen many different characters, each with their own personalities and story arcs of their own. Blizzard and Raimi have but one to choose. Just one. They could make more Warcraft movies but that's neither here not there.
Until they can actually visualize the movie, no work will actually be done on it yet. I doubt even a basic script has been written yet. Personally, I'd rather just see a rendition of the original Warcraft series but that may not happen and something entirely different may happen in it's place (course, I'd rather see a full-length CGI film based on the Warcraft games over a live-action movie, but that's just me).
Time will tell.

Am I the only one hoping that this movie never gets off the ground? It's going to be terrible!
Tokkar Apr 29th 2010 6:30PM
Hmm...
Okay, show of hands?
Anyone?
Yeah, I'd say you're the only one. I, personally, can't wait until the movie is available...I just hope they don't make it in 3-D. Seriously, enough with the 3-D craze, people.
elstor Apr 29th 2010 6:36PM
I'd like to see a platformer movie about WoW myself ;)
Maybe add in a touch of pixelation too
Lemons Apr 29th 2010 6:41PM
Blizzard has never made a bad game...why would you assume they'd make a bad movie? It it was a god-awful crapfest worthy of a "an Uwe Boll film" header they'd probably scrap it themselves.
I think it's going to be awesome!
Moonkinmaniac Apr 29th 2010 7:02PM

I'll bet we see a Starcraft: Ghost game before we see the Warcraft movie. :(
prenden2 Apr 29th 2010 6:32PM
Bobby Kotick's one redeeming act could be getting Blizzard to give Bungie a whack at doing SC:Ghost.
kdeselms Apr 29th 2010 6:50PM
Nobody remembers the Diablo CGI feature film that Blizzard was supposed to be working on, years and years ago? Never materialized. It's not high on their list of priorities.
splodesondeath Apr 29th 2010 6:53PM
Just for confusion's sake, they need to make it about Broxigar.
mdb808 Apr 29th 2010 7:02PM
As long as most elements are in CG and Knaak is part of the screen writing process then it might not suck.
