It's kind of a separation of that "epic" feel. It doesn't feel proper because the space seems off. Seriously, it's a design thing, and something that probably doesn't even occur to most players running through the zones, but I've done design work, art, theatrical design, some small classes in architecture - so these things actually stand out to me, whereas most wouldn't give them much in the way of attention.
