Breakfast Topic: Kill them

For instance, lately I've become enamored of Wintergrasp again. Not because I'm either good at it or geared for it, but just because I enjoy having a mass of targets to charge into. Most of the time I die horribly, (I PvP as fury, so I'm basically asking for it) but when I manage to make a kill or break up an Alliance formation (I don't PvP on my draenei very much, mostly my tauren) I feel pretty good about it. The idea that Cataclysm will be making group PvP more important with Tol Barad and rankings in BG's works for me. I'm very much looking forward to the changes that will let me get PvP weapons by doing PvP.
So how about you? Are you deathly averse to PvP, an arena maniac, or a group PvPer?

Horde Pig! I like dropping you scum dead one by one from the back lines in WG on my Spriest. Granted I'm in PVE gear with no survival, but I will melt your faces.

Alliance bigot! I love fearing you into hordes of well...Horde and watching them tear you limb from limb on my lock! Granted I'm in PVE gear with no survival, but I will steal your soul.
Okay, now that that's out of the way...
I love dropping into random BG's every once in a while. There are some that I hate and will not hesitate leaving, like Eye of the Storm and Strand of the Ancients. Eye because people don't seem to realize the main objective is not capturing the flag, but holding on to caps. And Strand because, well, everyone hates Strand lol.
I'm working on getting some PVP gear though.
I've always been interested in Arenas, but I'd have to do it with RL friends, and none of my RL friends play WoW...
Possum May 2nd 2010 8:34AM
Strand. Urg. With you there. With EotS on my battlegroup people do seem to actually be able to grasp the idea of towers before flag. Now if only I could convince people to stop trying to Zerg in Alterac Valley I would be happy.

Forgot about AV...Pre-80 AV isn't so bad, it's at 80 when it turns into a total zerg fest.

I did some 60-70 AVs on my Rogue recently, and I was shocked at how much *fun* some of them were! Nothing like the zerg/whinefest at 80.
IMO, 80 AV needs strong NPCs again; that seems to be what keeps 60-70 AVs working more like they're supposed to.

Put me under the "deathly averse" category. I remember when I first got into PvP, I died all the time. I hated dying, since I was taken out of the action and had to wait to be rezzed, then rebuff and ride into battle. I spent significantly more time rejoining a battle then I spent fighting in it. It sucked, to say the least.
As I got better gear and skills, I was able to actually kill some people. Soon I was actually contributing to the battle, but the damage had been done by those early years. I knew that every time I successfully killed someone, I was inflicting that same negative experience on them. I was making them wait before they could get back into the fray, and I didn't like knowing that I was doing that. So I stopped, and with School of Hard Knocks under my belt, I have no plans of returning.
TL,DR: The definition of victory in PvP is preventing another player from enjoying themselves, so I don't do it.
Possum May 2nd 2010 8:30AM
I think that's a pretty melodramatic conclusion there. Sure I don't like being killed in pvp but as long as I feel like I'm doing a good job I'm not going to go /wrists about it.
You might as well say you don't play competitive sports because you'll hurt the other team's feelings if you win.
Wyred May 2nd 2010 8:55AM
Gotta disagree, I don't mind dying as long as it wasn't a cheap kill. Admittedly I'm pretty geared for it now, but even when I do get killed, I feel ok about it as long as I made them work for it. I'm obviously not including rogues here. Bastards.

Of course somebody is going to loose but you try to get better. In fact, you are a good example of that, the only reason you improved is because you wanted to win. People who join a BG know what they are getting themselves into. If everybody got a gold star no matter if they won or not then winning would loose all of its luster. We end up with alot of gold stars that dont mean jack. People improve themselves in the face of conflict.

As am ardent SPriest, I was a free kill for a long, long time. Honestly my game was pretty much trying to use all my mana before I got smeared. To me death wasn't so much a loss as a free mana refill. So long as whatever I was guarding was held during my respawn time, it was a win.

At least he doesn't worry about the bosses' feelings when he raids. That would be concerning.

I'm going to be transferring soon to a different server to join a guild.
I'm really excited about the whole thing. Well, everything except the fact that it's a PvE server. I suppose I'll manage to live with it. *laughs* But I'll definitely miss the Horde/Alliance interactions that occur on PvP servers. There was always something magical about when I stumbled across an Alliance while questing or doing dailies, or outside an instance... Ya never know what was going to happen...
Do they attack me immediately and I fight them off?
Or do we pause, stare each other down, sizing each other up. Circling one another, hands twitchy on the draw, ready to attack at the first sign of hostilities. The air tense, holding our breaths... Do we fight or...
Does the ever humorous event occur? Where the stare down devolves in the other person waving at me, and I cheerfully wave back and we cheerfully go our own way.
I'll miss it :P

I am going completely the other way!
From PvE to a PvP server to join a new guild. (Thanks WoW.com for allowing them to post in your 'Classifieds'!)
It's an experience I've never tried before, but I hope it shall add a new aspect to the game, and make day to day life more exciting, trouble around every corner and all that.
The fact that I'm also transferring from Alliance back to the Horde to join them is slightly worrying, but I'm sure I can cope with the Tauren fleas!
CaryEverett May 2nd 2010 8:44AM
"Tauren Fleas"
Yeah? Well at least one of our races isn't a walking talking football!
*punts a gnome*
Deathknighty May 2nd 2010 9:07AM
Whenever I see a hordie, especially when I see a group of hordies and I'm accompaned by a group of allies, I always take a bow, and wave, and smile. It means neither party has to go on a big long grave run. :P
Jez May 2nd 2010 9:08AM
Dont worry about the Tauren...
"Steak twice a week!" and all that...
I hear they do a sizzlin' hot T-Bone and Rump Platter in Silvermoon.
RedMosquito May 2nd 2010 12:39PM
"Yeah? Well at least one of our races isn't a walking talking football!"
Did you forget who's joining you in Cataclysm!? ;)
Ada May 2nd 2010 12:41PM
@CaryEverett
Well, that's debatable. See, footballs are made out of leather...
CaryEverett May 2nd 2010 1:21PM
@RedMosquito
Goblins aren't footballs. They are more like travel-sized Orcs.
Oni Stardust May 2nd 2010 2:28PM
"Goblins aren't footballs. They are more like travel-sized Orcs."
And you know what a travel-sized Orc is? A green football!
And the best part about punting Goblins? Because of all those explosives they carry, they explode when they land! *PUNT* *"WEEEEE"* *BOOM*
You can even punt them into another Hordie and take both of them out with the explosion.
No doubt about it, punting Goblins is a million times more awesome than punting Gnomes.
