The Daily Quest: Children's Week

It's holiday time again in World of Warcraft and this week it's all about orphans. We are introducing them to dragons, taking them into battlegrounds and abandoning them on zeppelin platforms in droves. The blogging community has a few things to say about them too.
- Cynwise's Battlefield Manual has a comprehensive guide to the School of Hard Knocks.
- Cynwise also suggests A Modest Proposal, which I highly recommend.
- A Healadin's Tear has some tips for the much maligned battleground achievement as well in For the Children!
- Big Bear Butt chronicles his time with his orphans in Limping into Children's Week.
- Gauss ponders The Orphan's Future in Gauss' Adventures in World of Warcraft.

@yarf
That's the most ridiculous analogy I've ever heard. Few people are asking it to be made easier, and even fewer are asking for the PvP element to be removed. It's the way it's implemented and forcing everyone to work in a way that disrupts an aspect of the game. Even PvP players say it goes against the principle of battlegrounds. You know, last time I looked they involve competing until one side /wins/, not sits around while each side takes turns getting the flag, node, etc. It's called a battleground, not pass the joint.
Let's try a real world analogy. During football season there's a series of games where each player has to be the QB /and/ score a TD to fill some requirement that has little to do with football at all. Oh, and many of the players have little experience playing football other than it's what other kids did in school. Would that even make sense? It's annoying to the players who don't even /want/ to play football, let alone be the QB, the player who has trained for and is the QB, and everyone else who just wants to play the damn game the way it was meant to be played.

This post's image reminded me, I took some screenshots and a little bit of video of the running of the orphans. Where should I send any of that to? And should I hold off on sending video? It's probably a huge file.

No videos please. Images 1024 wide. Include the name you want it to be credited to. And send to robin at wow dot com.
Thank you :)

Is it possible to look at anything related to warcraft today without people spamming their QQ about SoHK?

Why don't orcish kids ever get shoes? Blizzard gives human kids shoes. I suspect discrimination here.
Amaxe-1 May 4th 2010 12:25AM
Shortage of Orcish leatherworkers?

I can't see Orcs stopping to care about orphans. Garrosh will probably tear the orphanage down and build a giant statue of himself.
Fletcher May 4th 2010 4:30AM
There's even a giant statue of Garrosh in the game already (it's in Warsong Hold) so Blizzard wouldn't even have to make any new artwork.
I suspect that the Horde as a whole has some kind of terrible dearth of cobblers, given that trolls don't have shoes either. Nor do Tauren, but then Tauren don't need them.

Too many Blood Elves.

I finally assaulted a tower in AV and got that bedamned SoHK achievement today on my mage, despite three-hour queue times, the active interference of my teammates, and the Alliance's general lack of PVP skills. Only King Ymiron to go, so I've got to gain another three levels before Sunday. For Gnomeregan!
Alternator May 4th 2010 8:01AM
My thoughts as well.
It simply isn't fun, which I think breaks a tennant of Blizzards??
From my perspective, this is either a very badly designed Achieve, or Blizzard intends for it to irritate and put players off BG's... You just need to look at the comments people are making about this one along with the guides to subvert the play mechanic of these mini games.

Eye of the storm 27 tries, ganked and camped in the grave yard. Unfortunately in my battle group the Eye of The storm is a bit unbalanced with hard core PVP camping PVE Grave Yard and killing us as we resurrect. With zero resilience we are easy targets. I have tried 27 times and spend most of my time dead. And most of the time my own side is calling out us PVE for ruining their battleground.
I can not say this has helped my feelings for Blizzard.
I do feel sorry for the PVP having a rotten week of non-stop ganking PVE players and not having any real challenge. And my side has not been doing to well with most of us dieing all the time.
Blizzard really did not need to do this. I think they were hoping we would come to like PVP by trying it. Problem is the gear difference between PVE and PVP is so stark that it not very fun for a PVE player. I just hate PVP now, and I'm starting to get annoyed with PVP players. Good job Blizzard.

I finally got it on the 39 try.

I got my achievement done the first day, thanks to luck in AB, AV and EotS and a helpful Horde team in WSG -- despite a hell of a lot of incidents that made me swear constantly in a fit of impotent nerdrage.
The next day, when trying to help two guildies get theirs? Nightmare. Absolute bloody nightmare. Both of them managed it in the end -- and even decided to get it on their alts, the madmen! -- but I'm not even considering doing it on mine.
I've done it. It's done. I've got my drake. I hate that achievement. Never again. I'm out of BGs for good, unless the WSG and AB rep grinds are fixed -- and as I got a 'working as intended' response when I asked about them during a Dev Twitter, I'm out.
Blayze May 4th 2010 9:05AM
Also, I've experienced some incredible assholery from PvPers who hate us filthy PvEers ruining their Battlegrounds -- so much so that I had to, with great joy, risk a premade's attempt at the "four towers and cap" EotS achievement so my guildie could get his credit.
I shadowed the flag carrier -- my faction, and someone who'd been raging at us the entire BG -- then when he dropped it for some reason, I nabbed it for myself and took it to my guildie. :D

I agree it's a pain in the bottom, especially for squishie characters.
Anyway I managed it.
AB - Easy, just run like the wind to the gold mine (quietest). If you miss it, loads of chances throughout.
AV - As above but trickier as only 4 things per team. I'd go for the furthest away as most people go for the close ones.
WSG - Pain in the neck if you are a caster. When you see the flag carrier about to die run close and spam right click.
EotS - As above you need luck if you are a caster. I waited until the flag was being fought over away from the spawn then went and camped the flag spawn. as soon as it was placed and respawned I grabbed it. I got hassle but Howl of Terror sent them fleeing and I was able to make the last few yards unscathed for the achievement.
It is mostly luck unfortunately. Helps if you are in the upper levels of your bracket too.

Did anyone else see "A Modest Proposal" and immediately think the blogger was going to suggest we all eat our orphans?
Cynwise May 7th 2010 11:48AM
Thank goodness, someone got the allusion! I intended to work that into the post somehow, but couldn't make it work thematically.
Oh well. Maybe next year I'll have "A More Modest Proposal"?
jdryner May 4th 2010 12:29PM
@Yarf:
Eh...how *even* is that pedestal on which you put yourself? Careful...watch yourself, someone might topple you over, just for the fun of ruining *your* achievement. :P
