Actually these add-ons increase situational awareness. As opposed to have a large amount of of combat messages cluttering your screen or having to look for the right icons you can have a large visual indicator that an item has procced or a reactionary ability is ready. This allows the gamer to spend more time looking in the middle of the screen at the field of battle. As an extreme I certain that if things like simpler visual notifications made one worse at a task or catered to those less "skilled" the Air Force would not use Heads Up Displays in fighter aircraft.
