Breakfast Topic: We are the Horde

What I mean by that statement is a touch difficult to express but I'll give it a shot. Basically, after five years of World of Warcraft, and 15 years of the Warcraft franchise in general, it can be easy to get caught up in the personalities and lore figures and lose sight of the fact that Garrosh Hellscream is not the Horde, that Varian Wyrnn is not the Alliance. The Horde and the Alliance are, effectively, people on your server playing the same game as you. They're people in the dungeon finder, the people you team up with in battlegrounds and fight in the arenas, they're your guildmates in raids and the people you PUG with. The story is one of the reasons I still play WoW, of course. I love the lore, I pore over announcements and scrape up all I can find about zones like Ulduar, I actually get giddy at big reveals for Gilneas. But in the end, what makes the game worth playing are the people we play it with, and it's those people who make up the Horde and the Alliance, not the NPCs.
Last night I went on a run with friends I've made through the game and then met in real life, and we struggled through and eventually downed a boss I've killed many, many times on my Alliance toons. The kill (a first for them) was just as sweet if not more so because I knew that it was an accomplishment, knew that it's all in the group you run with. I was proud to have been there, and glad they invited me. In the end that's why I play the game. Those people were the Horde last night, and last night, I was proud to be in the Horde too.
Likewise, when my Alliance guild killed Arthas, or Anub'arak, or Yogg-Saron, I was happy because we'd done it together, that we'd finally achieved it, and in that moment we were the Alliance, the story was ours. The NPC's we meet are means to an end, ultimately. It's our game, our story, we're the heroes and sometimes to the other guys we're the villains, but it's all about us either way. I play for those moments, great and small, a group quest in Zul'Drak or a raid downing a boss, where we get to play out a story.
So share your moments, please. Tell us stories about you and your fellows, your friends, your guildmates, your PUG groups, your arena teams or your dungeon groups. Because the game is all about you who play it with.

It almost made me cry :)

Touching*
'Touchy' is when you're easily agitated... actually this is Matthew Rossi's post...
'Touchy' is fine.
Special K May 6th 2010 10:52AM
Yeah... Touching...right...
When he talked about the story and how he liked it, I thought og the discovery, which is what I like most about WoW. Unfourtunately, I have to resist looking at spoilers so I keep the discovery.

"For the Horde! "
Ah.. wth.. "For the Ally too!"
Started as Alliance .. 6 months , switched to Horde .. and stayed there for the last . 3 years . almost 4 ..
One think i love and loved from the begining about horde is ... well.. they rally have fun playing! In 6 months as Alliance, had not even 10 minutes of fun..
Recently i created an Draenei paladin .. trying the lly side again... reached lvl 44 ... and damn ..is sooooo boring... nothing funny hapening ..
I don't know why.. i thought is just me.. but in my guild i have 4 peoples that already switched to horde.. and also 2 real life friends that did the same...
So ...maybe isn't just me .. maybe Alliance just isn't funny to play ? I just hope that me and my friends are just an isolated case of.. ow to say it.. unlucky Alliance players...
Zidri May 6th 2010 9:11AM
I kinda have the opposite experience.
Been trying horde a couple of times, but it's boring as hell.
Helps to have my friends at Alliance ofcourse.

I have been horde for the last 3 years and I have never looked back. My server has a great community despite being outnumbered by the alliance, makes me proud when we all work together to win WG :>

I beg to differ... The Allys can be very fun, Ithink the difference is the way the Allys socialize. For instance because of our smaller population we have in turn smaller guilds that act like small towns unlike the horde who has guilds that can be compared to large cities. And yes the majority of allys are a holes but that's beesides the point. Allys are Also not pvp heads we live pve.nit because were "noobish" just because like stated inrhe article above w like the joy of downing arthas

I'm in a similar situation to that of Mr. Rossi.
I'm playing Horde on a high-pop server with a very good raiding community, but I have some real life friends (that I've met through WoW) that are playing Alliance on a low-pop server, and the Alliance side there is almost dead. The AH is almost empty, PuGs don't exist (at least the ones that can do any content harder than Naxxramas).
I've tried many times to convince them to transfer away from that barren wasteland, but they say they're ok there (I can't see why). And I don't like the way Blizz is taking the Horde story lately (looks like they're making us the bad guys again, which is sad), so...
I dunno what to do xD
And now that I think about it, this is quite off-topic, sorry =$

That pretty much sounds like my WoW story, only the comparatively short time I spent as Alliance was because of my boyfriend at the time, who refused to roll Horde with me when I started playing the game despite my massive QQ and begging (he was a Nelf druid working on Kara with his guild at the time, but couldn't be arsed to even roll a throwaway Horde alt). I fell in love with the Draenei, and always liked Night Elves being a huge WC3 fangirl, but I could never really get into the lore/atmosphere of the Alliance side aside from that...it just felt bland to me. When I broke up with the guy, I rerolled Horde on a different server and never looked back. It felt like coming home! Nowadays, I've tried rolling a couple of Alliance toons just to experience that content one last time before Cataclysm, but I just can't get into it. I have a perfectly awesome Alliance guild, so it's not even the people that are the problem. I think part of it is that Horde on my server is very close knit because we're so outnumbered by Alliance. We FEEL like the ragtag band of outcasts.

I play both factions on a few servers. Maybe its just me, but the Alliance tends to have a 'whatever' attitude, when it comes to cross faction stuff like capital raids, WG, etc. The Horde is very passionate and very vocal at least on my server, we also totally dominate WG and PVP.
It may be just that particular server, but it just seems like the Horde has a more focus in lore, with Thrall being the leader. Everyone knows Thrall from the books and WC3.
That stormwind guy, who is he anyway?
Aaron May 6th 2010 8:25AM
Might just be your server. I play Ally and our trade chat absolutely EXPLODES minutes before WG starts reminding everyone who isn't paying attention to queue and I notice that no matter the time of day. I play a fairly balance server (55% horde 45% ally) and there is a TON of passion on the Ally side. We've done so many For the Alliance groups that is has created a real rivalry on our server. You can't go 2 hours without the "Stormwind/Ironforge/ect is under attack" messages popping up and I love it. We usually form raid groups, buff everyone up and defend the city. Now I'm not saying everyone on both sides jumps in on all of these shenanigan but it's there if you look for it and I do. Nothing like good ol' fashion hate to bring a faction a bit closer. ;-)
jealouspirate May 6th 2010 8:40AM
Uh, Aaron... what server are you on?
That`s exactly the kind of Alliance community I want!
Grovinofdarkhour May 6th 2010 10:36AM
I live in Chicago, and on my server, it seems like the Alliance are like Cubs fans, and the Horde are like White Sox fans.
White Sox fans (predominantly South-Siders) are a mostly blue-collar crowd with a chip on their shoulder having to do with the perception that their team gets virtually no media attention by comparison despite being as good or better most years. They hate the Cubs and all Cubs fans, they insult the team, the individual players, the fans, and even the ballpark. To a White Sox fan, whatever else may have happened, it was a good day if the Cubs lost. They thunder on against the Cubs like they're all trying to outdo each other for a prize of some sort.
Cubs fans (predominantly North-Siders), if asked anything about the White Sox, generally reply something like, "the who? Oh yeah, that other team down there. How they doin'?"

[SomeHordedude] whispers: Oh shit, sorry man! I hadn't realised!
[Swimstarguy] has left the raid group
[Swimstarguy] is bubble hearthing
[Raidleaderguy] whispers: dude, WTF?
[Swimstarguy], will, in a few seconds, in an act of total insanity, zone out of ICC 25 HC with the Lich King at 11% health
[Swimstarguy], OMGWTF, please don't do this, you can't do this, this is just wrong, Thrall will live
[Swimstarguy], DON'T DO THIS, NOOOOOOO-
[Swimstarguy] has been removed from the guild
[Guildleaderguy] whispers: bye, fucka.

Our guild is not just a usual guild, but a community place for our summer camp.
My boyfriend started a fantasy child camp 10 years ago (this will be the 10th anniversary), where we live in a kind of fantasy - lord of the rings - medieval world for two weeks. The kids (age group is 10-18) love it, some of them come back for the 7th time.
Most of the seniors play World of Warcraft, so we organized a guild called Sindeon (just like the 'city' of our camp). Most of the players pick their character names from a famous camp NPC :), and some kids joined too.
We are not a big guild (even getting 1-2 pug for 10 man ICC) and not far ahead (trying on Blood Council) but it is so awesome to keep in touch with those guys, and Warcraft is especially a nice fantasy setting, similar to what we do.
In the camp, we are warriors with very nice home-made plate armor (aluminium), or mages in dresses I sew, and orcs with pickup leather and fur pieces.
If you live in Hungary or come here you are welcome to join us :) www.sindeon.blogspot.com (we also had a guild website but i dont have time to that too)
Neyssa May 6th 2010 8:17AM
Oh, and for the Horde of course :)
Orcs are the best!
Shylv May 6th 2010 10:28AM
Indeed... Lady-orcs are veeeery sexy.
