My guild has been steadily working working on the Lich King encounter on 25-player mode for several weeks now. We've managed to gradually chip away and gain some meaningful progress on the
Defile and Twin Val'kyr phase. If it were just Defile, it wouldn't be a problem. Likewise, if there were only Val'kyr to worry about, we'd ace it easily. But combined, they present quite the interesting challenge. It isn't exactly the most enjoyable part of the encounter for me as a healer. After taking him down in the 10s, I can say the phase where all the spirits are flying around and waiting to explode on some player is enough to keep me on my toes, as well. The last boss I remember really holding my breath on would be the final phase when tackling Yogg-Saron. I suppose my best theory on that would be the longer I've worked on a boss, the more tense and focused I would get.
Other encounters?
There was one specific phase during the Illidan fight that kept me on my toes. The veterans of the game might remember the second phase where Illidan took to the air and impaled his war glaives on the ground, which summoned two fire elementals. They had to be tanked at a certain distance and a certain angle; otherwise, the elementals would completely fry the raid.
Archimonde had the same effect on me. Can you guess which part? It was when players were thrown in the air and had to rely on
Tears of the Goddess to safely land. I cheated and
Levitated.
A more recent encounter would have been Sindragosa. Every time she pulls players towards her and lights up an explosion, I get a little uptight. Someone seems to get hit.
What about you? Which parts of a fight cause your back to straighten and your fingers to hold that mouse with a firmer grip?

I think the problem raids have with not using DBM is unless they know you have the fight down perfectly, why should they trust you not to screw it up? A guild run probably knows how competent you are, but a pug would not.
Now perhaps this indicates how professional raids have become, where you have the Catch 22 of needing to know the raid before you can join the raid, but it seems this is the reality everyone has to deal with.
Like DBM or hate it, you'll either have to use it or else work twice as hard as everyone else to be viewed not quite as good. Whether or not that is fair is a different matter of course

During flame wreath on Shade of Aran. Always seemed like someone moved.

Golden Oldie:
"I will not move when flame wreath is cast or the raaaaaaaaaaaaid blooooooooooows uuuuuuuuuuuuup."

Totally Shade of Aran. It was always hilarious in vent, "Okay WHO THE HELL MOVED?!"
XD !!!!!!!!!!
Veyska May 7th 2010 10:59AM
Anyone else remember when flame wreath was bugged and stuff like snake trap set it off? >->
Nina May 7th 2010 1:22PM
Hahaha, so this.
Even just as a DPS and a newbie rogue in BC, I remember listening in on vent during a guild Kara run, and all of a sudden hearing "NOBODY MOVE!!! DO NOT F***ING MOVE!!!"
Scared the hell out of me.

2-manning Heigan the unclean, ... takes about 40 minutes. Done it a couple of times, didn't want to die, but mostly wanted the entire raid to understand there's nothing difficult about it.
Anzu May 7th 2010 8:20AM
The first time we downed Blood Queen. She actually gave us much more trouble than Putricide because a couple people just couldn't seem to pay enough attention and kept wiping us. >.
Vidomina May 7th 2010 8:23AM
The moment before you get in the C'Thun room, as well as the Vael fight

As a healer, definitely agree with Phase 3 of Yogg. This is the phase you really miss the extra keepers if you're using less than the full 4.
As a tank, I would say phase 2 of Kael'thas with all of the weapons. I was a feral druid that would typically have to pick up the axe and one of the one handers and kite them back to the wall while hoping our warriors could wait on cleave and whirlwind for 4 seconds (usually they didn't) so they didn't pull aggro then the axe whirlwind all the melee.

Hah, you can see how many old school players WoW has by these comments. Heigan the Unclean? Blood Beasts on Saurfang is tense? How long are you playing? 3 months?
jlpknights82 May 7th 2010 8:30AM
LOL I think many people just don't remember the oldest content being as tense as it was at the time, since they outgeared it for so long, and probably haven't even run it in a long time.
I mentioned Ragnaros in my comment below. Heh

Raiding is a lot more common in Wrath. These people could have been playing since Vanilla but never raided until now or raided in a very limited way.
Snuzzle May 7th 2010 8:40AM
Hey now, I raided plenty in vanilla and I'm sorry, the only "tense" moments in vanilla were when you were just about to down the boss for the first few times. I still remember the whooping and cheering on Vent when we downed Rag for the first time. After that though? Not tense in the least. It was just getting over that initial hurdle, every decently difficult boss is tense the first few times you kill it. The really tough ones continue to stay tense even after being labeled "farm".
Contrarily, we've been killing Putri for months and he STILL makes me sit up and pay attention in p3.
Nina Katarina May 7th 2010 9:22AM
Tension is one of those emotion that fades with memory - it's an immediate, visceral thing. Those far-off encounters probably felt more tense than my first steps into Icecrown, but all I can remember now for pre-Wrath are the feelings of relief when I won an encounter we'd been beating our heads against.
I eagerly anticipate losing some of my memories of the poo joke wing.
Squatstopee May 7th 2010 8:27AM
Fighting the Tauren in VC, those stuns are scary!
Elleyna May 7th 2010 9:55AM
Looks like I'll have to improvise!
jlpknights82 May 7th 2010 8:29AM
As a healer, most recently, the last 30% of Heroic Deathbringer Saurfang. It's incredibly fun, but those 6 marks being up is INSANITY. As the last phase of Heroic Anub'arak, for similar reasons.
Waaaay back in the day I used to get super-tense during Ragnaros' submerge phases. Hahaha
Snuzzle May 7th 2010 8:36AM
Phase 3 of Anub and phase 3 of Putricide. Maybe it's just because we're only just geared enough for ICC10, but the last phase of Putricide always feels so intense, I'm just throwing everything I can at the tanks to keep them alive.
I have also never downed Sindragosa or LK yet. Never even seen LK. Keep wiping to Sindy p3. :\
Cassie May 7th 2010 2:42PM
I feel your pain. My guild has been stuck there for the last month. If she doesn't die this weekend, I'm going to cry.
