Breakfast Topic: The other kind of hybrids

Two examples of well-received hybrids are Garona Halforcen and Rexxar. Garona, originally created as a half-human, half-orc hybrid, has in recent times been retconned into a half-orc, half-draenei -- still a popular character among those that know of her. Rexxar, the half-ogre, half-orc Champion of the Horde, has been a popular character since his creation in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne's orc bonus campaign.
However, hybrids can also be targets of immense hatred from the fan base. Rhonin, while not a hybrid himself, is often accused of being a "Mary Sue" by fans, with one of the most popular reasons being that he is married to a high elf, Veressa Windrunner. His twin sons, by extension, have been poorly received. There was some anger when it was revealed that the first Guardian of Tirisfal was Alodi, a half-elf.
But among all the disputed hybrids, none is more controversial than Med'an. The son of the aforementioned Garona Halforcen and Medivh, last Guardian of the original Council of Tirisfal, Med'an is quarter-orc, quarter-draenei and half-human. This apparently gives him the natural aptitude to not only be a mage, but a shaman and paladin as well. Not only this, but he becomes a new Guardian of Tirisfal, which drives some to say that he "ruins the point" of Warcraft III. Regardless of your opinions on the character, the controversy created by Med'an has few rivals within Warcraft's history.
In addition to hybrid characters, some races are alleged by some to be hybrids. The drakonid, humanoid dragons, are said in some places to be half-dragon. The same goes for harpies and other races.
What are your feelings about hybrids? Should drakonid be the next playable race, or should Deathwing just eliminate them all in Cataclysm? Or are you somewhere in between?

EVERY ONE of those exist in Lore?
Names and links please.
CaryEverett May 10th 2010 9:18AM
Not all of them are major lore characters, like Garona, Rexxar, Alodi, and Med'an, but rather simply ones which are noted to exist.
For example, the Night Elf / Eredar combination is from rape during the War of the Ancients. Night Elf / Troll is also a rape combination that produced children.

Yeah, there should be more bad traits. But, heck no reason they can't be thourough bred, but 100% of the time they get all teh best traits is kinda dogey.
Is it just me though? I always thought Lantresor was really cool, maybe it was just his blade and Jokeresqe like chaos warfare tactics but I wanna see more of him.

@CaryEverett
Wow. Humans are playas.

@GrumblyStuff
Developers get bored and lonely while locked in the offices writing new lore. And considering the devs are more likely than not, human... you can guess what happens.

Human/Night Elf? Source plz... Whats a giant?
Grovinofdarkhour May 10th 2010 1:54PM
Yeah, who porked the dragon?

About Lelior.... The way him and Ciarin tease each other in the comic, I always interpreted that comment as a joke. Lelior's response is likely just a come-back. It neither indicates that he is part troll, nor does it indicate that Ciarin does not have a mother. (It's possible that Ciarin's mother is dead, and Lelior is referencing that with his comment, but that seems uncharacteristically bitter and cruel between two individuals that are close friends like they are.)
Not saying that a troll/elf hybrid can't exist, just that I think people are taking that comment too seriously.

Yeah, some of these "half-races" listed are really weak in their justification.
Half-giants, because of the vrykul, even though they are their own unique race? The term "half-giant" was used to describe their size, not associate their lineage--we even see that humans are descended from the vrykul, not one of their two parent races.

I think hybrids supply some flavour to the game. Centaurs, Harpies, gryphons and maybe Tauren or Draenei to a certain degree belong to some of the creatures Blizzard did quite good work while animating and designing.
I would miss those creatures, except for nagas maybe.
As far can I remember lore, Malfurion got some antlers. Is he a hybrid in this state? Does this affect lore?
I think it is more or less task of the creators to fit a character into its environment.
By now I don't see that Blizzard did much mess by creating hybrids
Cure4Living May 10th 2010 1:22PM
Pretty sure there's a difference between a hybrid and a chimera.
But yeah chimera's do spice things up, hybrids no problem except for Me'dan.

Remember how WoW.com showed those mirco-pigs on The Queue? Well, they're pretty cute. They're created by selectively breeding for small size.
So, I say what we really need is more inter-racial breeding with gnomes. Just think of the possibilities!
How cute would a tiny little Night Elf be? Awww, look at its tiny kitty form.
Possum May 10th 2010 8:48AM
But...how would that work? And don't link the jug of bourbon again. I don't care how drunk you are it's to do with relative size.
Oh wait I just thought of something worse. Tauren/Gnome...The male Tauren would kill a female gnome when trying to have sex with her and the female Tauren wouldn't even notice a male gnome unless you used the entire gnome, which doesn't sound very conductive to breeding.
jealouspirate May 10th 2010 8:56AM
@Possum
This is how I imagine intercourse between a male Tauren and a female Gnome becoming possible:

Just aim it at the Tauren's appendage, and voila!
macster May 10th 2010 8:59AM
Possum, a jug of bourbon, and 2-3 healers in the party.

clearly some baby spice is in order
Nadia May 10th 2010 10:43AM
Baby Spice + Pygmy Oil + Small Feast = little tiny anything.
JC_Icefox May 10th 2010 12:17PM
So, Gnomes + Humans = Dwarves?
Guess the Titans did it wrong.
In the same vein, Leper Gnomes are a government conspiracy. C'mon, gnome size with green skin and a wanton desire for explosions? There's a few Goblins out there that aren't saying anything about it.
