MMO Roundup: Last week on Massively
Sometimes you'd like to know that there are other MMOs out there, right? It's not all WoW, all the time! Our sister site Massively can provide you with everything you need to know about all of the other MMOs around: past, present and future.
Alganon steals press release from BioWare The comedy train that is Alganon just keeps on rolling. Ethic over at Kill Ten Rats alerts us to a press release for the newly relaunched fantasy MMORPG that copies, nearly word for word, the wording used by Bioware to promote Star Wars: The Old Republic almost two years ago.

Curse.com sued by Games Workshop over Warhammer Alliance Members of Warhammer Online fansite WarhammerAlliance.com found a startling announcement posted on the site today: "We wanted to inform our community here on WarhammerAlliance.com that Games Workshop has filed lawsuit against Curse for operating and maintaining WarhammerAlliance.com." A look at the official complaint revealed a litany of allegations including cybersquatting, unfair competition, dilution (of the IP) and more.

Cryptic to announce new MMO later this summer With Star Trek Online and Champions Online chewing the scenery and igniting passions on both sides of the aisle, it's sometimes easy to forget that Cryptic Studios has a third project brewing in secrecy. Long rumored to be a D&D MMO -- perhaps even Neverwinter Nights -- the Cryptic folks have been, well, cryptic about the title. It looks like we may find out in a few months, however. In a recent interview with Bill Roper, Cryptic's chief creative officer cracked a small window into this upcoming announcement.

Facebook MMOgraphy: First Impressions of The Agency: Covert Ops SOE's upcoming spy MMO The Agency has been long in the making. We've been covering it at Massively for quite some time now. Though The Agency's not quite ready to launch yet, SOE has surprised us this week with a companion Facebook gaming app, The Agency: Covert Ops.
THQ says Warhammer 40K MMO doesn't need a million subscribers We all know game developers love to announce big numbers. A million of this, ten million of that, forty million of the other. No thanks, says THQ -- our Warhammer 40K MMO will be just fine without all that. The Warhammer 40k team is small and experienced, so they have the advantage of skipping a lot of expensive trial-and-error, moving straight to building the game right.

Ryzom is now open source The people behind Ryzom have been hinting for days that something big was on the way, leaving players speculating about what it could be. There were a lot of guesses flying around out there, but it's safe to say nobody saw this coming: Ryzom is now open source.

What's the worst in-game mistake you've ever made? We've all been there, right at that moment. You know the one -- when you miss-click, when you aren't paying full attention, when you say something you shouldn't, when you turn right instead of left. Suddenly, your eyes widen, stomach drops and mouth goes dry. You've made a terrible, terrible mistake. And we want to know all about it! Head on over to Massively and join in on the conversation.

I'm very glad they included the Ryzom article. Much needed publicity.

My god, it's like a never-ending laugh parade with that Derek Smart fella. Except the laughs are tears, and the parade is a terribly horrible knockoff of WoW. Oops, I forgot; if you say Derek Smart's name three times, he'll be summoned and murder you with a wall of text!
Derek Smart Derek Smart Derek Smart!

I'm unfamiliar with the so-called clown car that is Alganon, is there a succinct overview of their shenanigans somewhere? The wiki article is not up to the task.

Eat some Taco Bell and McDonalds. Wait two days. Make a poopie. Look in the toilet. That, roughly, is Alganon.

It's an MMO that steals ideas and such from other MMOs, and yet it's still active and (sorta) going strong.
As an example, they have WoW's tauren (they're even named the same!). And WoW's female gnomes are their female dwarves.

# Curse.com sued by Games Workshop over Warhammer Alliance #
Killing fansites is clearly the best way to get more clients... Oh wait.
Where did all smart managers who understood the value of fansites and communities go?

Hello, Zhiva, may I introduce you to Games Workshop? Clearly you've never met.
Tar May 11th 2010 11:43PM
Indeed, GW is very aggressive in regards to protecting their intellectual properties, so much in fact that they crush fansites and bar most retailers except ones officially endorsed from selling their product

That Curse getting sued thing looks like a load of bull to me. If they win that case, the judge needs to get smacked. And then the Games Workshop people too, preferably.
