Shifting Perspectives: Gearing a new cat druid at 80, part 3
Feet
Much to my displeasure, your top pick here is going to be a pretty competitive piece.
Enchant: Cats are among the few specs that don't benefit from enchanting Tuskarr's Vitality, because the speed boost from Feral Swiftness overwrites it. If you're hit-capped, use Enchant Boots -- Superior Agility. If you're not hit-capped, use Icewalker.
- Frostbitten Fur Boots Dropped (infrequently) by Marrowgar-25. Sought by several classes that have no business rolling on leather and who will blithely continue rolling on it as the guild moves into heroic Icecrown (and seriously, why the hell are frigging retribution paladins taking my goddamn boots)? Do I sound bitter? I think I sound bitter. Armor penetration as a stat can't die fast enough.
- Footpads of Impending Death Leatherworking BoE. A very, very good piece, and if you're not likely to see the inside of ICC anytime soon, I'd make these a priority. You're unlikely to replace them for a while.
- Blighted Leather Footpads Dropped by the Captain's Cache in heroic Halls of Reflection.
- Footpads of Silence The other leatherworking recipes for boots, and still a pretty good piece. However, I'd only sink the money into getting these if you have terrible luck with the HoR boots.
- Treads of Dismal Fortune Dropped by the Champion's Cache in heroic Trial of the Champion.
- Relentless Gladiator's Boots of Triumph Available for 34,400 honor.
- Treads of the Invader Dropped by Razorscale-10.
- Treads of Nimble Evasion (Alliance)/Treads of the Earnest Squire (Horde) Available for 20 Champion's Seals from Argent Tournament city quartermasters.
Fortunately, you have a lot of good options that involve either minimal raiding or no raiding at all. Farming Icecrown trash is nobody's idea of fun, but the Ashen Verdict will cough up a really nice ring for all your trouble.
Enchant: If you're an enchanter, you'll want Enchant Ring -- Assault on both.
- Ashen Band of Endless Vengeance If you're willing to farm ICC trash for reputation, you can get the exalted ring without ever killing a boss.
- Saurfang's Cold-Forged Band Dropped by Deathbringer Saurfang-10. The heroic version is among the top five for best in slot.
- Band of the Bone Colossus Dropped by Marrowgar-25.
- Dexterous Brightstone Ring Available for 35 Emblems of Triumph. Still a very good piece.
- Runed Band of the Kirin Tor If you're willing to shell out for a Kirin Tor ring, the ilevel 251 one isn't a bad option, but you're still better off with the Ashen Verdict and Triumph rings.
- Band of Stained Souls Dropped by Scourgelord Tyrannus in heroic Pit of Saron.
- Skeleton Lord's Circle Don't bid on this ahead of a plate DPS, but it's a not-totally-terrible drop off Faction Gunships-25. Still, you're much better off with an agility piece.
- Band of Draconic Guile Dropped by Razorscale-10.
- Greatring of Collision If you can find a Sarth-10 3D group bum-rushing the Nightfall title, keep an eye out for this ring.
- Ring of Carnelian and Bone Dropped by Forgemaster Garfrost in normal Pit of Saron.
- Titanium Impact Band A jewelcrafting BoE.
- Uruka's Band of Zeal Dropped by the Black Knight in normal Trial of the Champion.
I've written this in the two previous gear guides, but it bears repeating: Trinkets are very hard to rank. How much use you'll get from them depends on your gear, and I would really suggest using Rawr and Toskk's to look at which trinkets will immediately benefit you most. Recognizing this, the trinkets below have been ranked purely according to ilevel, with some commentary on when and how they might be useful. Either way, you really can't go wrong starting off with a Greatness card and one of the 5-man drops, particularly if it's the Needle-Encrusted Scorpion. Alaron also has an excellent post looking at all of the Wrath cat trinkets and ranking them according to your situation.
Alchemists may get some use from a Mighty Alchemist's Stone.
Jewelcrafters may get some use from a Figurine: Emerald Boar.
Engineers may get some use from a Gnomish Lightning Generator.
- Deathbringer's Will Dropped by Deathbringer Saurfang-25. Be prepared for every physical DPS in the raid to get into a virtual fistfight over this thing, because it's just that damn good. It's because of pieces like this (and the quarrels over them that just restart whenever a raid gets a crack at their heroic version) that I have very mixed feelings at best on the "prestige trinkets" in raids.
- Herkumi War Token Available for 60 Emblems of Frost. If you're in good gear with white hits (i.e., auto-attack) comprising a respectable portion of your damage (e.g., your average ilevel approaches or surpasses 264), haste becomes a progressively better stat. Until that point, you'll probably get more damage out of other trinkets.
- Whispering Fanged Skull Dropped by Lady Deathwhisper-10. If you can get your paws on this around the time you start rocking four-piece tier 10, all to the better.
- Mark of Supremacy Available for 50 Emblems of Triumph. If you're hit-capped, the passive effect is obviously useless. Even if you're not, it's of debatable use. You're still quite likely to get a lot more DPS from one of the trinkets listed below.
- Shard of the Crystal Heart Same deal here (and also available for 50 Emblems of Triumph).
- Battlemaster's Rage Availablel for 34,100 honor. The /use effect is generally worthless for a PvE cat. While the attack power won't go to waste, I still wouldn't use the Battlemaster's stuff unless you absolutely had no other choice.
- Battlemaster's Fury Available for 34,100 honor. See above.
- Titan-Forged Rune of Determination Available for 25 Wintergrasp Marks of Honor. Pretty much the same deal as the Battlemaster trinkets.
- Needle-Encrusted Scorpion An excellent trinket, especially if you're at or close to the soft cap for armor penetration. If your armor penetration goes significantly above that, you may get more DPS out of axing this trinket and going for broke on the hard cap (1400 armor pen).
- Pyrite Infuser Dropped by Flame Leviathan-10. This is actually a pretty decent trinket given the cat's traditionally high crit rate in raids, although it's obviously of more direct use if you're not hit-capped.
- Darkmoon Card: Greatness Still amazing. This is a must-have starter trinket for every feral. It's just as useful for bears as it is for cats, and there's a very good chance that you won't find any reason to replace it with anything other than an ilevel 264 trinket.
- Banner of Victory Dropped by the Argent Confessor in normal Trial of the Champion.
- Mirror of Truth Available for 40 Emblems of Heroism.
As with bears, you have a limited set of options outside of raiding, and (again, like bears) the best is the ultra-expensive Lightborn Spire. Seriously, whatever you can do here in the way of pugging ToC or ICC is only going to help; it's really hard to get a decent feral weapon otherwise. I've included a few strength maces here in the event that you find yourself in a group without a plate DPS who wants them.
Enchant: You'll want either Berserking or Mongoose (generally Mongoose) here.
- Lightborn Spire Reward from the questline started by the Battered Hilt. A very good piece, and unquestionably the best you're going to get outside of raiding, but it won't come cheap.
- Reinforced Shadowstrike Dropped by Onyxia-25.
- Orca-Hunter's Harpoon Dropped by Marwyn in heroic Halls of Reflection.
- Reclaimed Shadowstrike Dropped by Onyxia-10.
- Marrowstrike Dropped by the Argent Confessor in heroic Trial of the Champion.
- Tower of the Mouldering Corpse Dropped by the Devourer of Souls in normal Forge of Souls.
- Ironsoul: Dropped by Flame Leviathan-10. A strength piece, but worth looking for if Flame Leviathan's the weekly raid quest and a plate DPS doesn't want it.
- Garfrost's Two-Ton Hammer Dropped by Forgemaster Garfrost in normal Pit of Saron. As above, so below. Don't roll on this ahead of a plate DPS, but it'll tide you over until you get an agility weapon.
- Silvery Sylvan Stave (Alliance)/Staff of Feral Furies (Horde) Available for 25 Champion's Seals from Argent Tournament city quartermasters.
Every week, Shifting Perspectives treks across Azeroth in pursuit of truth, beauty and insight concerning the druid class. Sometimes it finds the latter, or something good enough for government work. Whether you're a bear, cat, moonkin, tree or stuck in caster form, we've got the skinny on druid changes in patch 3.3, a look at the disappearance of the bear tank, and thoughts on why you should be playing the class (or why not).Filed under: Druid, (Druid) Shifting Perspectives

You should include on your list thing "I don't assume your a level 40-ish druid who rolled a druid for the bear's dance". Even if i is implied in gearing your new 80 cat. Nice videos, and what is with the cowboy?

Or like me, who assumed that bear form and tree form were the two forms I would use most (based on advice from a real-world friend who is now raiding ICC as a tree), then getting to the mid-20's and realizing that:
1. Kitty form totally rocks. Since then, unholy DK is the only thing that has come close for me.
2. I disliked tanking, so bear form was mostly only useful for staring at a big, slow bear butt, which doesn't really do anything for me.
3. I disliked healing, so I wasn't going to respec or dual-spec into it any time soon. Plus the dual gear set problem would be... a problem.
My kitty is now level 67, so I'm getting close to having use from these guides. :) Of course, I still run into other people who also assume that kitty form is just a diversion and my primary spec is either bear or tree. For example, the DK from my guild who wanted to run Hellfire Ramparts as a pair, then kept yelling at me to quit DPSing and heal him. (We eventually finished the run after finding a pally to join us.)
Kurtis May 12th 2010 7:21PM
Aww, dang... went and left out the whole point. My toon's name includes a reference to the bear form, but of course that is now totally wasted since he hasn't been in bear form once in probably the last 15-20 levels.

lol that first video was so...!
*distracted by animated kitten*
also I remember seeing that cat herding video a long time ago. My step dad worked for that company and brought it home on a vhs for us to watch :p
Wellsee May 12th 2010 2:46PM
I worked for EDS during that time. For some reason the company had those "cowboys" visit accounts around the country, and ours was on of the watering holes. It was an awkward moment. What do you say to those guys? "Hey, uhh, nice commercial."

Yay! I love Simon's Cat :D

You forgot about idols. For those, the Triumph idol is really good, but the Frost one (if you can keep a rake up at all times) is BiS
Meatwadz May 12th 2010 10:26AM
I was under the impression that the Triumph one was BiS ... I suppose that on fights like Saurfang the Frost one would outshine but when there is any movement the Triumph one is insanely better.

Awesome guide.
Simon's cat and cat yodeling were hilarious.

We've recently adopted a new cat, who must only be about eight weeks old. The first night we got here she was active and friendly however since then she just hides. When we manage to find her we can't get close without her hissing. She also growls, it's like the steady hum of a car changing gears in a car. We're worried she won't get out of this habit and it's been a few days since she's been here... when will she be sociable and how can we help?....
bubastis35 May 12th 2010 3:41AM
OK, probably not the place but I love cats and I'd love to help your kitten.
When you brought the kitten home, did you introduce her to your house slowly, room by room? If you didn't, you might have overstimulated and frightened her. At the moment she's associating your presence with being poked, prodded and scared, so you need to fix that.
First, you should move her into one small room, with a blanket or basket she feels comfortable with, her scratching post, her litter tray and her food. A laundry would be good, or a small study. It has to be a room that doesn't see too much traffic or noise. It's OK if she hides a bit in here, as long as she gets used to the space.
Then, you need to socialise with her at her pace. Just sit in the room and wait for her to come to you if she wants to. If you have to, take a book and sit there with her so she gets used to you being around, and stops associating you with big scary noises. Eventually she will come around, but you can't rush a kitten, especially one that young. At eight weeks old, she probably hasn't been around people long enough to move into a new home, so it's a hard thing for her.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to see a vet. Sometimes antisocial and behavioral problems can come up because the cat is actually in pain or just ill.

Simon's Cat is the best, my favorite is Cat Man Do. Such a hilarious and unexpected turn of events, especially since I've had a cat punch me in the face before while I was sleeping.

Got the gear?
Check!
Next stop... JOHN F%$@#ING MADDEN!!

Allison, you are my favorite blogger by far on wow.com! A few suggestions here though:
1. Guidelines on stats. Hit cap, expertise cap, arpen soft and hard caps? These are all things a kitty needs to keep in mind and what makes gearing them so tricky, though talents do give them more than a little help on expertise.
2. All that pvp gear really? Having more options listed looks nice, but if there are just one or two that are nevertheless easily obtainable, I think it's okay. Rings is one place for this: the Dextrous Brightstone Ring gets you halfway there, and the friendly ICC ring is the other place. I think there's a ring from one of the ICC 5s that will do until then. Surge Needle also makes an appearance at times due to weekly raid quests in EoE. Trinkets are another place - Banner of Victory and the Scorpion for ArPen win - these are both passively an enormous chunk of the arpen needed to get you to the softcap.

Surprisingly, I found this to be the most helpful statement in the article: "run dungeons until you get 58 Emblems of Triumph, convert them into Emblems of Conquest, go buy a Helm of the Wayward Vanquisher from the Conquest emblem vendor in Dalaran, and buy a tier 8 helm."
As a new 80, I didn't realize you should consider trading your emblems down. Or that you can do better by getting older gear. Or even how you got a Helm of the Wayward Vanquisher. (I had assumed that it came from a raid, which I've not done yet, thereby unlocking that piece of gear for you.) Maybe there should be (or is and I missed it) a WoW Rookie article about understanding all the tier and emblems talk - or a flowchart! There are different iLevels within a tier?!? Oh, my poor head!

1st on chest. frigid noose > those others, about equal to t10 chest. most people use t10 chest in place and use off set gloves. both sack of wonder and the badge chest suck in comparison to noose and t10, mostly b/c both chests will put you over hit/expertise caps. and they also lack arp
2. pallys should NOT be rolling on marrowgars boots. if they do and win, tell the RL to commit suicide....arp is the last stat a pally should look for down a long list of stats.
other than those two things, pretty solid list. a lot of gear is from 1st 4 bosses in ICC and is very good, plus frost badge gear. very easy to make a great dps set with just those
