Ghostcrawler -- CCNot every pull is going to require crowd control, but there will be pulls that require crowd control, which isn't really the case today. Once you overgear content you overgear it, and you can take shortcuts.
We're going to make sure warriors have reasonable crowd control. Redesigning Intimidating Shout is a likely candidate. Death knights may need something more reliable depending on how they shake out with the resource changes. We're making some other adjustments here and there, but for the most part every other class has something they can do.
--
There are exceptions of course and it depends a lot on your group composition and the skill of your players, but generally we assume that CC is something for which the dps players in the group are responsible.
Under that model, Mind Control works fine for priest crowd control since the healers have plenty to do already. Mind Control won't work on every type of target, but many types of crowd control have a target type limitation. We think having to approach a pull differently depending on your comp is one of those things that makes classes feel distinct from each other. It's hard to put together a 5-player dungeon group or a 10-player raid in Cataclysm that is totally helpless with regard to crowd control. If you don't like approaching encounters as puzzles to be solved, and / or really aren't interested in dungeons being challenging, then stick with normal dungeons or wait until you outgear the heroics. :)

Ghostcrawler -- Rate of Changes in Cataclysm Alpha/Beta, Death KnightsFirst, be realistic that the community is never going to rally around a single vision for a class, or really any design change we're considering. For every player who liked the fast pace of having to hit a button every GCD, there were plenty of others who found it tedious, repetitive and exhausting. I'm just asking you to be realistic about the accuracy of posts you read that say "Nobody was asking for this" or "This is not what we want."
The main goal of the resource change is to buy DKs some free GCDs. Currently some abilities just can't compete, even if free, because you don't have the GCD to use that button. However, it's also not the goal that DKs stand around doing nothing for long stretches because all their runes are used up and everything else is on cooldown. Being GCD locked isn't a fun place to be, for any class. You can't vary your actions at all -- in fact you are often such a slave to those actions that you have tunnel vision for your UI (even if modded) and can't react to the dynamic nature of most encounters these days. If anything messes up your rotation, say you have to move or are temporarily CC'd, then everything just falls apart.
We don't get every change in place before making an alpha or beta build. It's much like the way large patches roll out but to an even greater degree -- you'll see some changes, then some more, until the rate of change ultimately slows down right before ship. There are very few Cataclysm mechanics, and no classes, that we think are "done" yet.

Lies, slander, GCD Capping as HAT was some of the most enjoyable moments of my life watching my DPS Meter absolutely soar as big number Eviscerate Crits flashed across my screen every second!!!!

I have to say, as an unholy DK I really do enjoy hitting every GCD. I measure my success based on how perfect I hit my rotation. I guess I have to wait and see what Cata brings, but doesn't it feel like "why fix it, it ain't broken" ?
Tom May 11th 2010 3:38AM
Whereas raiding ICC today a DK in my guild was complaining how exhausting it is to have a button to hit every single global cooldown for 4-10 minutes.
GC is right on this I think - people just don't share a global vision about DK's and for everybody who thinks they speak for the group there is another who has a different message.
He's not necessarily "right" about the change, but he's right that you shouldn't assume you speak for everybody.

While it's 'OK' now, there are plenty of times when I wish I had more flexibility.
Which, it seems, is what GC is saying. So, as an unholy DK, I cannot wait for these changes.

Is this going to be a thing for Protection Paladins as well? I mean, I know we're getting different rotations for multi- and single-target fights, but as things currently stand we're more or less in the same boat: With the 969 rotation, every GCD is used.

I really like in pvp being able to use an ability every half second if I have the resources for it. Helps with the quick reactions and keeps it nice and frantic. If people want longer times in between abilities then go roll a caster. I'm not sure about the change, I'm happy with it as long as I still have enough resources ready to make use of the quicker unholy presance GCD.

@Tom
It's the same way with Enhancement Shamans:
Stormstrike
Lava Lash
Earth Shock
Flame Shock
Fire Nova
Maelstrom Weapon Lightning Bolt/Chain Lightning
Magma Totem
Lightning Shield refresh
Remember this is on a priority system too, not a rotation. Having to break this chain really messes with your dps as well. Come Cata I'm REALLY praying that Blizzard will trim this since they will be added two new strikes for us. Honestly I'm starting to regret not sinking my Frost badges into Resto.

Oh man, having to push a key every 1.5 seconds for several minutes? I sympathise, you poor babies. *sarcasm*
Byron May 11th 2010 6:34PM
@Dan: As a DK tank, I agree. I hate having dead spots in my rotation, it makes me feel vulnerable in case something goes wrong during the gap. I hope the new spells and abilities fill the GCD gaps they're opening up with the rune system change.

Its tru this is what was lacking from wrath, Halls of Reflection excluded, and that TBC over did imo. I'd like them to find a nice healthy middle, TBC heroics "felt" more heroic imo

Once you overgear a dungeon, i.e., once you've ran the first raid a few times, you'll be able to aoe your way through the dungeons just like you do now. LAME. Big deal, you'll have to CC the first time your in there and the rest of the time will be an aoe fest. I wish they would make something as tough as MgT again and something as huge and tough as BRD. But oh well, we'll probably have to wait for the vanilla of their next MMO for that.
