Cataclysm Leak: Mastery formulas

The Nihilum Wiki has been making some great discoveries in the Cataclysm alpha client files, including new UI elements, factions, and titles, but here's some of what we know you really like: math. They've broken down how each talent point you spend in a tree will bolster your spec's three mastery bonuses.
Brief summary for those who haven't been following: each talent point you spend in your "main" tree will give you three separate bonuses that benefit your class, scaling up as you get more points. The first two are basic bonuses like spell power or melee haste, while the third is one specific to your class, such as a chance for your healing spells to splash to nearby targets.
Formulas after the break.
For example, a single point spent in your shaman's elemental tree will give the following effects:
- Spell Damage + 0.157%
- Spell Crit + 0.157%
- Chance to proc Elemental Overload + 0.5%
- Spell Damage + 8%
- Spell Crit + 8%
- Chance to proc Elemental Overload + 25%
With the knowledge that the expansion is still very much in the testing phase and these numbers likely aren't final, you can check out the full spread of mastery formulas over at the Nihilum Wiki. Nice work, guys!
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will destroy Azeroth as we know it. Nothing will be the same. In WoW.com's Guide to Cataclysm you can find out everything you need to know about WoW's third expansion. FromGoblins and Worgens to Mastery and Guild changes, it's all there for your cataclysmic enjoyment. Filed under: Cataclysm

Their site was working fine all the way up until this afternoon (PST). The unfortunate part is that I just got a response in regards to editing their site, so I could add all the Blacksmithing recipes. They probably just need some time to work on it (the Wiki page) or something.
EasyAnswer May 13th 2010 8:03PM
does this mean more classes will have one set for all talent trees?
Dreyja May 13th 2010 8:04PM
I don't think we can check out the link as it stands - need a password. :(

I'm confused, what exactly is WoW.com's position on posting leaked content?
Two days ago when MMO-Champion removed all their info on the Cataclysm alpha you said: "Since WoW.com has not been hosting any alpha content, this will not affect our site."
You also posted leaked videos of the Worgen model, in addition to this.
So... you don't approve of hosting leaked content, but telling people where find it is good?
You just really seem to be self-contradictory in your behaviour.
Adam Holisky May 13th 2010 8:13PM
We neither approve nor disapprove. It's not our job to make such determinations (although some of us might voice our own opinions in personal editorials). We link to thinks, point out relevant information, and that's that.
Eamara May 13th 2010 8:14PM
How is that self-contradictory? It's not on this website at all, they're not the ones going out and finding it for themselves. However, they're going to point people in the right direction if someone else finds some info and posts about it.
If WoW.com stuck their collective heads in the sand, all they'd get would be the ignorant masses whining "there's this awesome cataclysm info over here, WHY AREN'T YOU POSTING ABOUT IT!?!?!?"
Damned if you do, damned if you don't it seems.

"Damned if you do, damned if you don't it seems."
That's my life's slogan.

I suspect the difference is where the data came from--screenshots taken by beta testers would definitely be covered by the NDA and therefore a no-no to touch, but information datamined from patches anyone can access would not be covered by a NDA.

Also note that WoW.com isn't an official Blizzard fansite either.
Utakata May 13th 2010 10:31PM
What's even weirder is the guy is posting this (if my memory serves me correct) used to work for Blizzard. /boggle

I assumed the Masteries went down. As in, you got the first one for the first points you put into your Talent tree (and they got stronger the more points you put into it), then further down, you got the second one, then the third one was when you filled out the tree to your 61-point Talent. I didn't know you got all three at once.
Mr. Tastix May 13th 2010 8:46PM
My guess is that the third Mastery (in this case, "Elemental Overload") would be gained when you hit so many talents in that spec (most likely, as you said, on the 61-point talent, so as to deter people away from doing half and half specs for extra Mastery bonuses).
The +damage and +crit will, I presume, be applied always but you'll find a much larger benefit from them if you spec deeper into them.
Teron May 13th 2010 9:09PM
Pretty sure they said that mastery bonuses ONLY applied to the spec you had the most points into, so someone with 5 into arms and the rest into prot would get not bonuses from arms masteries.
George May 13th 2010 9:26PM
@Mr. Tastix
it is impossible to get mastery bonuses from two trees. You only get the bonuses from the tree you've invested the most points in.
Mr. Tastix May 13th 2010 10:33PM
@George: That's what I meant.

If one talent point gives +0.5% chance to proc and 51 points give +25% chance, then where did 0.5% disappear?
0.5*51=25.5
Magicslime May 13th 2010 8:20PM
It probably isn't .5 for every point, it is probably more like .3 or .4 for a few of the points and that it ends up at 25%.
Leandro May 13th 2010 8:23PM
"rounding off to about the following:" means anything?
Tyr May 13th 2010 8:23PM
Alpha = numbers are convenient for testing purposes.
