Phat Loot Phriday: Nibelung

From the Diary of Synysta
Dear Diary,
I've found it! I've finally found it! After all this time, I have finally found that which will free me from their taunts and jeers. After the dark lady fell, I found it in her remains. Perfectly shaped and symmetrical, its power could be felt coursing through it. The staff looked as though it were constructed from bone and sinew and as I caressed its curves, I could hear his voice. The fallen king promised power beyond my dreams, but I knew they were empty promises. I will bend the power to my will; I will harness all it has to give and make it my own!.
They all laughed before, scoffed at me and made fun of me. But not this time! They will rue the day they ever crossed paths with me. This time the blue ribbon for the Dalaran pet contest will be mine, all mine! Who needs cats and dogs when you have an undead harbinger to do your bidding?
Nibelung is one of those items that just has some fun flavor to it with an interesting proc ability. More information after the cut.

I only have a DK and a Paladin at level 80, so every time I see someone with this staff whip out kickass ghosts when they DPS, I secretly wish I had a staff-wielding class =(

Don't feel too bad. It's a great RP staff, fun flavor and all... but by most accounts, any iLvl equivalent with constant stats will compete or beat it in contribution to your DPS.
That being said, it'll be in my bank for a while still for the fun proc :)

Dharma, that's exactly why my hunter has the heroic version socketed with Expertise, Parry and Defense, topped off with an Icy Weapon enchant.

Balance druids like this staff, actually; though it's situational. On fights where they die easily it's a poor staff. On fights where they stay alive, it shines. This is because druids easily reach their haste soft cap and can get very high crit values, so the extra stats from equal ilevel items sometimes aren't wanted.
From EJ: "The [Nibelung] proc is strong. In an ideal situation, it will do somewhat more DPS than equal-ilvl weapons. The complication is that the Val'kyr can be killed by ordinary damage, so on some fights will they not add much DPS, making the weapon worse than a "normal" one. Overall a strong item, but keep your other options in mind at fights where it doesn't work well."

I have this Staff...
...on my bag.
C'mon, it's Spellpower only, I find Abracadaver and Mag'thari Chieftain better than this one!

I feel your pain. . . but thats cuz I only use the mace/staff classes and I miss out on all the really cool swords.
I got the battered hilt, and turned it in for. . . a horsehead mace. No uber sword. =(
I think mages and warlocks have the best of both worlds. Cool staves and swords!

That staff is a good one.
Marathal May 14th 2010 1:07PM
Me wants.

next time if you want a very good staff wielder, get a shaman
Galilyse May 14th 2010 1:46PM
I'm still awesome whether you deem it so or not.

i love this staff. i have not bothered to look it up, but just some notes based on my own observations: the proc has an internal cooldown less than thirty seconds because i often end up with two val'kyr following me around doing my bidding. they cast smite. i do not know if dot ticks will proc the val'kyr, however channeled spell ticks will. i think starfall has also proc'd them. what's coolest about it though is when combat is over and a party member is standing still, then i target them to see them targeting the val'kyr lol.
Shao May 14th 2010 1:15PM
And the val'kyr can spawn multiple times. I got this last week, and it proc'd three times on the Lich King, during the Val'Kyr/Defile phase.
Mugutu May 17th 2010 3:14PM
There is no internal cooldown whatsoever.
As a mage, this staff is amazing for AoE, especially as frost. Fingers of Frost counts as a spell cast, so when using Blizzard on about 5 targets I can get 4 or 5 Val'kyrs to spawn within a few seconds. They end up doing 15-25% of my AoE damage.
Starlin May 14th 2010 1:41PM
The most that have procced for me is four. All within seconds of each other. Happened twice actually. Nice and random.
vanye111 May 14th 2010 2:21PM
I get one at a time. I've had 3 out at once, but they proc'd individually. I'm pretty underwhelmed by this staff, sadly. :(
Wolftech May 14th 2010 2:36PM
This staff is awesome. I procced 7 during the Sindragosa gauntlet.
Gridneo May 14th 2010 1:11PM
I will continue to use Nibelung, but damn do those Valkyrs die easily. It's always awesome when they flip out, and attack something that is tossing out AoE (i.e. killing Raging Spirits, and they decide they want to stand in Remorseless Winter)... You should have alternative weapons for AoEless fights, but Heroic Nibelung will be my weapon of choice for a long time.
Rakah May 14th 2010 8:45PM
fel synergy as a warlock heals the valkrys
Zankoku May 14th 2010 1:18PM
