I disagree with "Nobody likes to hop into a random heroic and discover that he's in there with a mage who's wheezing out 800 DPS. Don't be that guy."In my experience, nobody notices or nobody cares. Maybe you might get kicked once, although it's not yet happened to me - I assume that you'd more likely be kicked if you were playing sloppily rather than just having low DPS. If you keep out of the fire and keep up with the group, you'll be in and out of dungeons with gold and glory before anyone even checks the DPS meter. My steps for when my alts (mage or otherwise) have reached 80:- Keep questing through Icecrown / Storm Peaks while you wait on groups. You're not gearing up or earning gold standing in Dalaran.- Join random normals until in mostly 174-187 items (although a couple pieces of lower ilvl won't matter).- Once you're in 187-ish gear, join normal Forge of Souls / Pit of Saron / Halls of Reflection over and over until you've filled in a couple of choice 219 pieces. This should bring your GearScore up a bit.- When you're over 3200 GS (at least, that's my marker), join everyone else in running Heroics for badges towards your tier set. You'll fill in gear gaps with the ilvl 200 drops along the way.Additional tips:- Don't spend money on profession items, they won't last you longer than a few dungeon runs anyway. In fact, don't spend money at all.- Don't stress over reputation items, although do have the sense to put on a tabard that will help you reach some goals should you happen to be unlucky in drops.- Get AtlasLoot as an addon, and create yourself a wishlist of dungeon drops (esp normal ICC dungeons, since you can chain-run those without lockouts). This is how I geared my characters:Tidal (Mage) - http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Thorium+Brotherhood&cn=TidalWyght (Holy Priest) - http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Thorium+Brotherhood&cn=WyghtGrudge (Death Knight) - http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Thorium+Brotherhood&cn=Grudge

I've been running the daily heroics with my 5,7k GS shaman just for the frost emblems. I have yet to see someone being kicked over low DPS. I don't even feel it's a drag to have them, most runs we have someone who's there for the same reason as me, being greatly overgeared and doing like 5-6k DPS. This is what you used to get out of a decent heroic group at the beginning of the expansion. The runs are still quick, and with tanks and healers overgearing there are rarely if ever any issues (might be that I'm an overgeared healer though). The ingame mail you get when you get your pet pug goes something like "...and hopefully showed a new player a trick or two...". This is what the daily heroics was intended for - geared players giving new players a quick start - a shortcut to the endgame.Let's not shame the new players out of this intended possibility.

I've not gotten kicked, but I've gotten complaints. Fresh 80 Arms warrior, get into my first heroic, and only pull 1300 DPS, which is really annoying when five levels earlier I was getting 1500 in Drak'Tharon Keep. Of course, if they'd looked at their damage meter before the final boss died, they may have tried.A little research, some quality time with a test dummy, and a spec tweak and I was bouncing anywhere from 1500 to 3000 DPS depending on the encounter.

Fortunately, as an Arcane Mage (assuming proper rotation, talent spec, decent gearing decisions, and careful use of mana), it's really really easy to crack 800 DPS, especially on bosses. Using heirloom gear and dungeon blues/greens, I did 2K+ DPS on bosses by the mid-70s, and as a fresh 80, I could pull off 3K on bosses consistently before getting any gear from 80 dungeons. Arcane is pretty much ideal for a fresh 80 because of its perks:Low hit rating: Arcane can double-dip from Arcane and Frost talents for 6% total hit chance before gear. Add into that the Grand Staff of Jordan I'd been leveling with (2.59%), and one or two other armor pieces with hit, and while you're not raid hit-capped, you're well on the way for Heroics.Mana = damage: While you won't be sustaining Arcane blast spam for more than a few seconds until you get some emblem gear, you can still put out some decent damage if you play aggressively, the fights aren't too long, and Evocation is ready. Fortunately, 5-man fights are rarely too long, and 2 minutes is usually short enough that Evocation (and the rest of your cooldowns) will be primed and ready at the start of each and every boss fight. Basically, you can do damage far beyond your gearscore, though not for very long. It's a lot of fun.
